Here's a tip about charging your Desire using the in-car cigarette lighter socket together with a USB lead. If you find that your Desire isn't charging correctly and even worse losing charge whilst plugged in, check out this thread Charging: USB and AC differences
You may be using a USB socket that will only allow up to 5v 500mh output. You need a USB socket that can provide 5v 1000ma (1amp). The above thread will reveal all you need to know, bottom line, the two data pins on the car USB socket need to be shorted out, for the Desire to believe it has an AC charge and therefore draw 1Amp.
I don't think that recommending "shorting" of an electrical device is in anyone's interests. Not only is it a potential fire risk, it could damage your car electrics or your phone. I have the official HTC car charger (£10 from Amazon marketplace) and it charges as AC outlet. Spend a few exra quid and be safe people.

Unbranded Desire
Hi folks,
New to Android as well, I'm afraid.
Bought my Desire from Play, unlocked and sim free so to speak.
Is that the same as being 'rooted'? Or would I have to go down the path mentioned in the other thread about rooting.
Basically I want to save to the sd card and not to the memory, as I think most other seem to want as well.
Thought it better to do now before I have to much on here to reinstall etc.
Also like to thank people on here for all the brilliant advice and tips.
Bob,
No its not the same as being rooted. Rooting is known as voiding the warranty and is something that is 'against' HTC's wishes; Play.com would not sell you a device in this state!
I bought my Legend from Play.com too.

Ahhh right your are.
I thought that might be the case, but I must admit i was getting confused with all the terms being used.
I'll leave well alone then until I understand the thing better. Also I'm on a Mac as well, so things don't always work the same anyway.
Late reply, sorry. OFI, the issue is when you get a phone call or an alarm goes off. That "wakes" the phone. That brings up the lock screen with the option to dismiss or snooze (or reject).
So, test it out by setting an alarm, calendar reminder or having someone call you. Or simply just turn it on to the lock screen. Then, do an actual palm mash on it - put your hand on the face and then move just a little to simulate it being in your pocket. You'll find that it does unlock rather easily.
Tim
Having spent a weekend out on the town with my phone in my pocket I can concur that without a pattern lock all sorts will happen!
Made calls, made emails, updated facebook..but my favourite.. I managed to open the Barcode scanning app and killed the battery in no time
I now have a pattern lock!

I agree, I've not managed it either, maybe my jeans aren't tight enough!
I've had my phone in loose pockets and tight pockets and never had anything more than the power button get pressed accidentally. WTF are you guys doing?
Hi Guys, I'm having some problems in putting my own photos into HTC Desire. Supposingly, when I create a new folder "Albums" in sdcard for my photos, the phone should automatically recognize and create a new album named "Albums" rite? It doesn't work for me. Seems like my HTC desire can't recognize any photos unless I put them inside DCMI folder. Anyone has the same problem?
And 1 more thing, how to refresh music library? everytime I add more songs into my sdcard, i can't see it inside music library unless I reset it to factory default.

once you create the album, run an app called sdrescan or restart your phone. This causes the phone to rescan the sdcard for any changes. Ditto for music

Thanks 4 ur reply. I tried, but the SDrescan would scan my sdcard for a few hours and may be forever if i don't force to stop. Anyway, i solved the problem, i need to format my sdcard, after that it works, kind of weird

How much space have u used on your sdcard. Maybe it takes longer the first time because it has to index everything. I'd let it run for like 10 minutes and see if it finishes, it will be faster on subsequent runs
It could be a sign of corruption, causing software to get into an endless loop. If you can, put the card into a card reader and use the Windows disc checker. Also, give it a full format (copy everything off it before you do!).
Last night, i put in a new sdcard and i used Sdrescan to scan it for a whole night and when i wake up, it's still scanning =,=. My sdcard is 4gb and i think i only used about 500 MB.
Out of curiosity, I've downloaded SDrescan and giving it a shot. My card is an 8GB class 6 card, with 512MB take off for apps. According to the "SD & phone storage" settings menu, it is 6.93GB, with 5.65GB free so I'm only using about 1.3GB.
2 seconds.
It took 2 seconds to rescan. Either SDrescan is unreliable, or your cards are messed up!
To check it for errors (with Windows and a card reader):
1) Insert the card so it shows up as a drive.
2) Open Windows explorer by double-clicking on "My Computer" or "Computer" on the desktop and load the page that shows all your drives (on the left hand panel, it has the same name as the icon, "My Computer" or just "Computer").
3) In the main panel, right-click on the drive that is the MicroSD card and left-click on "Properties", at the bottom of that menu.
4) In the new dialog box, click on the "Tools" tab.
5) Click on the "Check now" option in the "Error-checking" section. If you get a security box, click OK.
6) Turn on "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".
7) Click on "Start".
8) Cross fingers.
9) Wait.
Hi Quboid, i gave it a try and found no error, anyway, I bought a new sdcard to test before but problem persists.
There's only 1 way to force my fone updating sdcard is to reformat it. So, whenever i want to add in just 1 song, i need to copy out everything, format the card and copy back.
Yes, I cant understand why is it? Everytime I restart my fone, it does reload the sdcard but no updates at all. Is there any other application out of sdrescan to do it? Thanks.
If you're looking for apps on a computer rather than on your phone, use a website called www.androlib.com. Easy to search for loads of apps and all that I have seen have the barcode, so can scan with barcode scanner rather than having to find them using your mobile internet.
btw,is there any way to stop the phone locking while calls are active. I hate having to turn the lock off to end the call if I want to hang up first.

iGO My Way navigation
Maybe some of you have heard of it, maybe others haven't... But this app is a total killer to ANY other turn-by-turn navigation, that can run on Android powered phones. Ive tried Google navigation, and its a disaster. Also tried some other free stuff, but all the maps are online. This can get VERY expensive when going abroad.
We have been using this navigation on HTC Legend phones, but as Desire is the 'big brother' of Legend, everything should work just fine (hope so). Here you can find all the needed info about iGo My Way navigation for Android - "iGo My Way" navigation for android
As there seams to be screen size problems with Desire, please read the whole post top-to-bottom and only then get into action

Sorry if this makes me sound like a complete numpty; but I only realised this a couple of days ago:
Scenes! Once you've configured your 7 available screens with all the bits you want, go go Menu - Scenes and save it with a unique name, then load up one of the HTC templates and play around with them and save that as a whole new scene.
I now have a standard one, a social one and a travel one.
It's worth starting with the clean slate too as you're more likely to come up with a scene truly unique

Thanks for a really nice guide.. I was wondering if it would be possible to get the stock nexus one unlock screen onto my HTC desire in the same way as with the gallery and launcher?
this is my first droid and i think its amazing think the only thing i have found is that i cant see the screen in sunlight, could anyone tell me is there anyway when i recieve a sms (txt) i can get the screen to light up thanks
This afternoon I shall be picking up my HTC Desire from the post office, and will probably spend most of the night migrating away from my Samsung Galaxy.
For the Galaxy, there's a custom recovery boot option that allows one to make a complete system backup (system settings, apps, app settings, text messages, home screen layout -- everything), and I've been using this diligently when trying out new firmware versions.
Does something similar exist for HTC? That is, does the Sense backup app perform a full system backup, or just some/most of it (say, apps without settings, or no text messages)?
The reason I'm asking is that step 1 of the rooting guide suggests making a backup, and suggests 3rd-party (ie. non-HTC) apps for the job. Is this out of preference or necessity? Would it not be possible to start off by making an HTC backup and moving that off-site (to a pc), or is that not an option right away?
Google voice search is officially available on Market for the Desire now. I also installed Gesture Search which I think is amazing, i've actually removed the people app from my desktop and use this instead now, much quicker.

I cant find Google Earth on the Market (Branded Orange). Can someone post the barcode for it as I believe that it will allow me to download it. It worked for mPlayer which I also cannot find on the Market.
Thanks

It's called Gesture Search that allows you to search by writing the letters of the word on the screen. The more letters you write narrow the items searched
Hi, i'm from italy, maybe i haven't understood well but the when i use the search key to call a name, always starts the internet browser. I have also deselected all the searchable items except my phone list, but nothing...
Is there anyway to ensure that when I open the Internet app, it goes to my home page? Currently it always goes to the page I last viewed.
Any thoughts?
Menu | More | Settings | Set home page
Needles to say, your home page is only invoked when you open the browser *after* it's closed. If the browser is still active and you hop to the Desire's home screen and then back to the browser, it's still open and won't try to load a new page.
Hello everyone, I'm also a newbie in android os. I have some questions:
1.About the new os 2.2 , how is that system going to be installed on the phone, is it a complicated process just like rooting the phone? or it will be easy from the menu Settings > About phone > System software updates?
2.How do I select more photos and upload them on flickr?not just one by one...is there a tip in the menu of the phone or if you know a good application for this kind of operation.
Thank you.

WaveSecure This is a fantastic application. It allows you to keep track of your phone if it ever gets stolen. You can remotely lock, backup, wipe and restore data to your phone using the WaveSecure web interface. Must have!
Might be worth pointing out that WaveSecure is ONLY a 7 day trial. $19.99 p/a for a full license.
However after testing it, via finding my phones location, I'll DEFINATLY be purchasing a license. Looks an awesome piece of kit.

I'm pretty new myself, but from what i understand FroYo will be an update that you download to the phone. I'm sure that someone will give you better advice if I am wrong.

It only works if your contacts are google type contacts
