Just in case I get this all buggered up. How do you just flash a Radio, also where do I find the relevant one for Orange - I assume that it must be Radio_32.30.00.28U _4.05.00.11
Can this be done using Goldcard or have you got to root the phone?
Knowing this I may try the 1.21 release mentioned.
i have just done my desire & an update appears thats not even available to the orange branded rom, personally i can see froyo for orange taking forever. Well worth the time switching to a standard htc rom

Make sure you have the latest version of htc sync & double check everything as you go.
When you finally get the rom installed don't upgrade the phone to 1.21.405.2 update the wifi can't start for some reason i had to go back through the flashing process twice since. Not sure why it doesn't like the update tried everything from factory reset to removing battery to restart, may be just as isolated issue with my phone or something to do with orange proprietary lock.

I wish i could get to the install ROM mate!! I cant even get adb set up properly, i have checked, and double checked as i go along, HTC sync uninstalled and re-downloaded from HTC.com same with drivers. When i follow the steps on setting up adb i cant get the number to show up in the list of devices. So i wouldn't be able to make a gold card as you need the CID number dont you? I'm pulling my hair out here

Have you dowloaded & installed AndroidSDK on your pc i unzipped that to my c drive then clicked on set up & installed all packages. Just a thought as i don't see anything in the instructions about doing this it just says unzip, try doing it that way but also once installed copy the contents of the inner folder to the outer one.

Yes did this, as i thought it may be the reason, i didnt try to install all packages though, just the USB driver package, i will give that another try with all packages.
Thanks
Dont know if this has anything to do with it or not, but when i open devices manager, and click on MY HTC and view the properties, i get this in the small text box
Quote:
Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)
Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.
I have followed the "check for solutions" but it still is the same. but if i go down to portable devices in the devices manager and check the "android phone" properties it says that the devices is working properly....?

Have you tried uninstalling the device driver & installing the manual version for your device/computer os, as it does mention that sometimes the driver needs to be manually installed

well actually i did try this, i even downloaded the Nexus one drivers from the unlockr page that the OP linked in his first post, as there was no option to download desire drivers, but when i am prompted to search on my PC for drivers and i navigate to the relevant folder, and click on the actual folder, it says "no items match your search" I'm not one to ask on forums for help, but in this case i have tried everything and followed instructions to the letter.
No problem, pity none of it has worked for you. only other thing i can think of is if you have access to another pc & try on there, after all some of them can play up in various ways.

Excellent thread worked first time, getting rid of stupid orange branding. Used Vista and a Sandisk 4gb card. No problems with OTA update and WiFi either after debrand.
Thanks so much
I have a question regarding orange branded phones.
According to the OP i should have Game Demos, Orange World and no talk on my cellphone (HTC Desire is orange locked) for it to show signs of branding, but I don't. I actually have talk and no sign of any orange stuff on it.
I've got my desire last week from Orange romania and I have confirmed its locked but I'm not really sure if its branded, my internet app is named "Internet" no custom IM and standard Maps app ... I'm a bit confused do I need a Gold Card to root or no? All my prev phones i've got from orange shown signs of branding but this one kinda surprised me.
I've also seen this on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OZ9YlH78CI
my package was the standard HTC one (white) with a little sticker on it "Terminal locked in orange network" and "No romania language package" (thank god)

When I tried to upgrade to 1.21, my PC didn't see my phone at all. I reinstalled drivers etc, etc, but what worked was to install HTC Sync. You can download a copy from the HTC website :

Just my luck this! No matter what i try, i just cannot get this shizzle to work!! Tried your suggestion SJamG, uninstalled HTC sync, restarted PC installed it again (same with the driver installer) I have also seen that HTC sync only works with a 2.0 USB, well i have one on my PC, as i have checked in the device manager, but how do i determine which is the 2.0 slot? I have 2 slots on the front, and 4 at the back, no matter which one i plug my phone into it just will not connect to HTC sync!

I blame Orange!! lol
This may be a silly answer but my HTC sync wouldnt recognise my phone until I switched to HTC sync mode on the phone rather than USB charge only
. Just a thought
Just a thought, but when you plug your phone in, select the "Disk Drive" option on the phone and see if it mounts in Windows.
This is really strange, if it does, then I reckon that the PC has got itself all mixed up with the ADB driver side of things, if it does not mount, then I would be thinking the actual drivers for the phone need re-installed. What OS are you using?
I would try a different PC if I were you.
Sorry you are having issues, especially when others are having success

Sometimes auto-play opens when i connect the phone to the PC but sometimes it doesn't, but if i go to Computer and open the drive that the phone is connected to it will open OK, i have even tried another supposed solution that HTC sent to someone here http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/64808-htc-sync-cant-find-my-phone.html#post603376 But even that didnt work.... although it did speed up my system a bit I am using windows vista Home premium 32 bit. Apparently this is a common issue with the phone not being able to connect with HTC sync.
does adb have to be working to flash/debrand? and if i cant get my CID number when entering the commands in the cmd terminal does that mean that adb is not installed correctly?
Has anyone who has successfully managed to debrand/flash to the unbranded 1.15 found that their 3g internet problems have gone away? I'm desperate to sort my phone out and am pretty sure that its the crappy Orange ROM that is screwed, but don't want to flash (I understand you can't go back to the Orange version) find it's still not working, and then not being able to send my phone back to orange again for repair/replacement.
Thanks a lot.
Mine seems to switch from HSDPA to 3G and vice versa without any problems. I did have all sorts of problems with my previous Desire (callers not hearing me and data switching problems), so got a replacement from Orange...I sent the debranded phone back to Orange and have not heard anything back.....YET!
Hey SJamG,
Did your replacement phone work without those problems out of the box? Or was it still not working until you flashed? Also do you know if the software version was the same in the second phone out of the box?
Thanks a lot,

When you finally get the rom installed don't upgrade the phone to 1.21.405.2 update .
Wish i'd read this first as I did upgrade and the WiFi is now unavaliable.
I'm considering just jumping in 2 feet first and trying the version of FroYo that's out for the Desire, but i'll probably only do so if I can essentially roll it back to the "official" 2.2 update when it eventually comes out.

Its quite a big problem with the wifi there are loads of people on another forum got the problem with the 1.21.405.2 update. personally i would flash back to the rom you used before the ota & wait for the official desire 2.2, i think the 2.2 has a different boot loader so if you update to that one your goldcard would be no good to flash back. It seems to involve a more complex method to make the goldcard for the newer boot loader of 2.2
The Following User Says Thank You to anoniemouse For This Useful Post:
If you get your phone unlocked you can insert your goldcard then let it update via ota to 1.21.405.2 update & the wifi still works, but be aware if you do it with it still network locked it will simlock your phone
i'm not really fussed about the phone being unlocked - i'm on Orange UK because all of my family are so i have no real need to change.
I'm not too fussed about WiFi as it stands because I don't have a WiFi router at the moment.
Im also fine with Orange, i just don't want to have to wait extra months to get 2.2 after the sim free are updated, does anyone know what happens in this situation? will Orange already tampering with 2.2 now, or will they have to wait for the official release and then stuff it full of their crap ie: browser IM, maps, music, ringtones etc .....?

Orange have to wait till HTC get their sense ui working on it first, then orange will get the rom to put all their crap on then they send it back to HTC to put it up for ota. I am also fine with orange but want to get the full potential from the phone.

well i think i may go ahead with what you suggested then, will any size SD card work? or does it have to be of a certain size?
The decision is really yours....not sure how stable the 2.2 ROM you have found is and if many have had success with it or not....if I were you, I would stick to Firmware version 1.15.405.3 until 2.2 is available
SJamG, this process that you have written the guide for, is it the same as rooting, or is it not the same? ie, after i have done as per your instructions would i be able to load custom ROM's onto my desire or would i have to root it?
Think you will find you have to root it for some custom roms, but i have seen some custom roms about that root your phone as part of their set up procedure.
I manually chose to update to 1.21 from the phone's menu - BAD IDEA! That is what caused my WiFi problem.
Stick to flashing the 1.15 as noted in my first post if you want to be safe. i did eventually get the 1.21 on the phone, but flashed it using the same method as above. Beware with this though, it may lock the network on your phone - It locked mine and I paid a $15 fee for an unlock code. To avoid this I could have downgraded the Radio version, but thought it is useful to have an unlock code for the future.
Hope this helps.
Again, I take no responsibility if you BRICK your phone. Do all this AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Hi,
SJamG, thanks for the guide. I used it originally to debrand all of my orange stuff but got caught out by the OTA upgrade and lost my wifi. Have done it again with the ROM you suggested and have also experienced a network lock and after booting it up. It's asking for the SIM network unlock pin, is the only way to get past this to pay for an unlocking code? If so, what website would you recommend getting one from.
Also, could i not contact orange to get the SIM lock code for free or would this be complicated because I've updated the ROM?
I tried that & was told they can't unlock till you have had your contract for 3months, (personally i believe it to be won't unlock) also they charge £20.
Did a search & unlocked online for £12

Is it okay to use the SAME SD Card that your phone came with?
e.g.
1] Copy contents (e.g pics, music) of SD card to PC harddrive
2] Format SD card
3] Use SD card as Goldcard *root achieved*
4] Delete contents of SD, not necessarily reformat
5] Copy back the contents (e.g. pics, music) from PC harddrive to SD
6] Boot up phone and will all seem as per normal?
7] Put a ROM on SD card
8] Use ROM Manager to apply different ROMs
