Default Development OS

I am very new to android development and java programming, and I was wondering what everyone was using as an OS for development. and If you are seeing some performance differences between boxes or feature benefits.

thanks

For Android development, I am running Eclipse with the Android plugin. This platform runs on an i7 860 on win7 x64. No issues here.

I'm pretty sure my system specs are overkill. the development platform is pretty lightweight.

You should perhaps be clear on what you are developing. I use Ubuntu to develop and comp;ile Android source code but that may not be what you mean. For app development, as already mentioned; Eclipse seems to be the staple.

I use Eclipse with the Android Development Tools (ADT) plugin. This would by far be the most common path for Android app development.

I've got to say that Eclipse and the Android emulator together can pretty hefty in terms of memory. The greatest benefit to performance in my experience is RAM. I have 12GB of RAM on Mac OS X, but similarly novox77, it's overkill for Android development.

On Windows XP and Linux, you'll want at least 4GB. On Windows Vista and Windows 7, you'll want at least 6GB.

Not true. I run both eclipse and hte emulator with no issues on my win7 laptop sometimes and it only has 3GB of RAM.

None of the dev tools are at all heavy weight, though this might change with the new emulator coming out soon as it will be capable of running native OpenGL code.
