Default Permenantly bypass Motoblur and keep your apps! (root required)

First of all, I need to say how simple this really was. The main problem is when you use the ##BLUROFF command, the next time you boot up the phone it is forced to do a "factory reset" from recovery, wiping the data partition. The solution? Obtain root as quickly as possible and get rid of the app forcing the factory reset.

Follow these steps in order:
1. If you already do ##BLUROFF you can skip this step. But if you're already a seasoned Devour root user, you might want to do an SBF flash to restore everything to TRUE factory settings. To do that, use RSD Lite and CALAND_X_01.15.08P_MONSTER_01.sbf. Otherwise, just reboot into recovery mode (when turning the phone on, hold R+SPACE, then power on) and perform a factory reset by pressing Z+M. In any case, get your phone back to the first-time activation screen. Keep in mind, either of these things will delete all your apps and settings!
1.5. If the original SBF file was flashed, rename Blur_Version.1.15.83.calgary.Verizon.en.US.zip to "update.zip" and put it on the root of your SD card. Apply it through recovery mode (Z+N).
2. Turn your phone on.
3. Bypass Verizon/Motoblur activation by ##BLUROFF
4. Go into Settings -> Applications -> Development -> Turn USB Debugging ON
5. Obtain root. Use the procedure at Android Central and SKIP ALL STEPS INCLUDING AND AFTER 26. You will need rootshell later on.
6. From ADB shell, after completing the root process, you should still be in the superuser terminal (you will see a #). Run:
Code:
rm /system/app/Setup-release.apk
rm /system/app/Setup-release.odex
Alternatively, you may use an app such as Root Explorer to navigate to the /system/app folder and manually delete from there, or rename them.
7. Disconnect your phone from your computer.
7.5. If you are not reactivating your Devour on Verizon, wifi will stop working. Now might be a good time to follow the quick procedure here to try to get wifi to work.
8. Restart your phone. It will do this automatically if step 7.5 was performed. It will kick itself into recovery mode and perform a "factory reset" and will reboot two or three times during the process.
9. When your phone eventually turns back on, you should not have to bypass activation by ##BLUROFF!!!
10. Turn on USB debugging again.
11. Connect your phone to your computer.
12. Run: ADB shell
13. Run: rootshell
14. Type the password: "secretlol"
13. Run: mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
14. Run: chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
15. Run: chmod 4755 /system/bin/busybox
16. Now you may run: rm /system/bin/rootshell
17. Run twice: exit
18. If you're still on contract with Verizon, I assume you want to keep using your phone. Dial *228 to reactivate your phone if necessary (you won't be getting 1X or 3G service if you need to activate).

Congratulations! You should now have a rooted Motorola Devour with Motoblur bypassed! Feel free to get rid of bloatware, etc. I have placed apps and widgets on my home screen and they didn't get wiped after I restarted, and I haven't seen any Force Close errors as of yet. Please post comments or results in this thread, and if something messes up and/or you manage to brick your phone, always remember you can start over by flashing the SBF file as outlined in step 1. I'll be watching this thread closely.

EDIT: Got wifi working! See Make wifi work off contract. ROOT NOT REQUIRED! for how and please post feedback there!

Also, see http://androidforums.com/devour-all-things-root/441838-list-apps-ive-removed-system-app-after-motoblur-disable-new-post.html for a list of APKs which seem safe to remove. Back them up, just in case.

Thanks for all the work you've done. I have an unactivated Devour and your thread has been very helpful. Getting the WIFI to work would be a giant step forward. Again, thanks for everything you've done!!!!!!!!!

Glad to hear it's working out for you, anything I can do to help the poor souls stuck with this phone. Out of curiosity, is your Devour flashed to a different wireless provider or is it simply off contract?

My Devour is currently off contract and unactivated (I have upgraded the line it was using) but it will still connect to wifi. Can someone upload a copy of their /data folder for their phone which won't connect, so I can take a closer look and see what all is different? At least, I hope that's where the key will be… I'm not much of an Android developer, and it doesn't help that nobody else gives a flying **** about this phone anymore. It has seen no significant developer work since it was rooted a year and a half ago.

EDIT: Wait, thought of a better way. I'll backup my entire phone filesystem then flash the SBF file myself, the do my own comparison. If it's taking too long, I'll copy the backups BACK onto the phone and see what makes wifi work again. If nothing does then I know I'm probably screwed. Well, my parents still have Devours, I can probably use one of those when they upgrade.

EDIT2: Crap, I guess it isn't in the /data partition. I just did a "factory reset" on my Devour, wiping the /data and /cache partitions. Wifi still works, I'm posting from it right now. Man, this keyboard sucks compared to my Stratosphere...

My Devour has not been flashed to any new carrier. I had received it from a friend who wiped it (did a factory reset). He used it on Verizon. He gave it to me to use as sort of a mini android tablet (run apps and stuff while I'm at home). So it is not on contract. I've rooted it, and followed your instructions to permenatly bypass the Motoblur. However, whenever I try to connect the wifi I get "Unable to start wifi".

Yeah, I get that too... It's annoying, since 3G definitely won't work either. The only way I can find to install apps is through ADB. It is nice, though, Motoblur was terribly intrusive, without it the Devour seems rather benign. I'm trying to figure out how to make wifi work again but it's a pain in the ass. I don't even know what to change to make it work or where to start looking.

Just an update for ya'll, my parents finally upgraded from their Devours, so now I have two Devours in my possession, one which will connect to wifi and one which won't. The one which will connect was formerly activated and I ran a /data wipe on it, so it's completely stock (it was never rooted) and the other one was SBF flashed. I'll root them both and try to find the difference. If I'm successful, it may make all the difference.

Hi p_025, thank you for all great work you are doing here.
I live in Ukraine, maybe you never heard about such country, so we have lots of devour here (because it's cheap on eBay) it can be perfect flashed for local carrier, but one problem exists, unactivated phone doesn't have internet connection (you can have voice call, even you can 3g internet with devour as usb modem, but unfortunately no internet inside phone) also wifi is unable to start. It seems motoblur somehow blocks internet connection if phone is unactivated with Verizon.
So custom rom could be an ideal resolving of problem but it's not avaible.
Now you have two phones, both unactivated, and one have wifi connection and another doesn't. It can be solution to look inside file system and search for some difference.
Perhaps you can figure out what's the clue (as you're clever guy) or maybe you can provide us files from both phones and here we will look for solution.

Thanks again...

I actually wrote a Java application for just that purpose; determining the differemces between two filesystems. The main problem I'm having now is pulling the entire filesystem off the phones. ADB doesn't do it properly and Root Explorer flakes out a lot when it comes to copying large amounts of files. This would be MUCH easier if there were a working ClockworkMod for the phone.

p_025, You find any success for working Wifi after Permanent ByPassing of Motoblur? I didn't tested it on any 3G/2G Internet. Is it working on it? I wants to use EVDO as well....anyone find settings for it? Let me know if anyone know how to configure it.
Help will be really appreciated.

If your Devour is still active on a line with Verizon, both wifi and 3G should still work. All you have to do is reactivate the phone by dialing *228. If the phone is not active on any line then 3G simply won't work. But wifi can still work, see here for details.

No....I'm not with Verizon. Actually the story is: I've bought this device online frm EBay. Changed its PRL to work on another network(Indian Wireless Service Provider). I can make Calls & Text. Permanently Bypassed the Motoblur by ur Guidelines, But after that can't Access Wifi Internet. I'm still not sure will the 3G/2G Internet will work on it or not. I desperately wants to use EVDO service in it.
So It really depends on You. Your Help finding the clue regarding the Internet malfunction will really help me out.
waiting for ur reply....

I found the link for the Custom Roms: hv a look on it.
TheUnlockr | Motorola ROMs

I was wondering to try it. But if I failed, wud it be possible to Backup my Device with CALAND_X_01.15.08P_MONSTER_01.sbf file provided by u above? Explain me how wud I do it if it happens.

Default Skype Motorola Devour

Hello

p_025 I wanted to ask You , is there any program which I can install on Motorola Devour with Android 1.6 , and can use this program to
connect to Skype , connection over WiFi , and so that this program will make VOIP phone calls through Skipe . ( not like
Skype_Lite_Beta_1.0.0.5.apk , it makes phone calls over connection to local phone numbers )
Why I can install on Motorola Devour with Android 1.6 Skype mobile™.apk ( Verizon ) but not Skype_1.0.0.614.apk -
Skype_v2.5.0.108.apk ?
Is it possibale to configure Skype mobile™.apk ( Verizon ) for work on Motorola Devour with Android 1.6 over WiFi ?

Hey so I'm very new to the whole root community and nwe'd serious help with a problem I ran into acouple months ago.
So I rooted my Motorola Devour with universal android root. Then I used the root explored app and deleted all the motoblur bloat wear and though I had dissabled moto blur. But when I went to turn off my phone and then turning it on the next day my phone took forever to restart again and when it finally got to the loading screen and just when it all looked to be working I get a black screen with an error saying: " the application Accounts (process com.motorola.blur.setup) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." this repeats and repeats. I believe that the Android 1.6 os is intact but because the blur setup file (which I considered bloat wear...) I deleted isn't on the phone anymore. It shuts me out for security reasons I assume. Any expert help and walkthrough/advice would be well appreciated.
Oh and another thing my Devour was just a $50 phone I picked up and wanted to expirament rooting with so it's not a contract phone or anything.

Easiest way to fix that is to flash the SBF file as in step 1 above, as long as you don't mind losing apps and app data. That's what I always do when I wind up deleting something I shouldn't. I've followed my own guide here more times then I'd care to count, and I got so good at it that I could do the whole thing in a matter of a couple minutes. After that, check the list of apparently safe-to-remove bloatware I've linked above as well. I need to update that list, but that's most of the crap.

To be honest, I'm not sure. I've never bothered with Mac OS, it's more pretty than it is useful. You might try searching for a version of Android SDK (or specifically ADB) which works on a Mac. I'm pretty sure something would have been released.

One thing to watch out for, I'm pretty sure there's no version of RSD Lite (or any similar software) for flashing Motorola phones for Mac, so be careful. I'm not sure you'd have the option of flashing the SBF file.

Yeah you're right there isn't so I'm gonna use a PC then... And yes Macs are less practical then PCs when it comes down to this...

ok... just got the devour off ebay. works ok! My son however says to do the whole "root" thing (after i mentioned i noticed lots of apps were not available to me in the market that were available to son's Sony phone) Anyway, rooted fine, I just don't know what i'm suppose to do next..

The real question is.. i've noticed you (and others) saying about disabling "blur" Why does everyone want to disable it? what are the advantages of that? I'm on verizon.

I need serious help with this. I don't plan on putting service on my phone I just want to use it for wifi purposes.

I'm having trouble with step 1. I've been trying to firgure it out for a couple of hours but I'm just not getting it. I downloaded RSD Lite and CALAND_X_01.15.08P_MONSTER_01.sbf, I have no clue what to do with them. Do I store the CALAND_X_01.15.08P_MONSTER_01.sbf file on my sd card?
What do you mean by reboot in recovery mode? Just power off the phone and restart it? I don't see a recovery mode at all.
