Default Help With Droid 2 Sim Card?

Hello, I've just stumbled across this forum that looks like i'll be looking into much more frequently. Looks like it has a lot of good information. But my question here is with the Droid 2 Global i'm wondering how SIM cards work? Im leaving for Romania in a couple of weeks. I've called Verizon asking them what there global date/voice/texting plans are and they seem far to expensive. 50c per text, and $100 for 70MB data? I was just wondering if maybe when i arrive in Romania if i was to pick up a SIM card that i've heard about if it would probably be cheaper? Im looking mainly to just send text messages out, possibly some short phone calls. Yes i would use wifi, but im not sure what my current situation is going to be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I honestly don't know much to tell you about sim cards as I am a Sprint customer, however, you may also want to take a look at Skype and Skype credits and see what that cost would be for your phone calls.

I'm also gonna move this thread to the Droid 2 section, there are most likely people that own this phone that would have some helpful insight for you.

Hey Karl,

I am in China right now and have been using my D2G with no problems at all. I called Verizon and had them give me the unlock code for my phone (which you need to use another SIM). Then, just get a local SIM card and pop your Wireless over to GSM ONLY, so you don't connect to any Verizon partners in Romania. I am not 100% what bands Romanian companies use, but I don't see it being an issue.

If you want to text/call to the states, that is where it gets pricy, but it is doable, you just run down your SIM card quicker. I do not use 3G here, but do find WiFi that suits my needs. (Furthermore, if you have a hardwire connection you can turn your laptop into a router per se).

My only complaint with the phone (and this may be because I haven't looked into it too much/I also use Go Dialer) is that I have to make a contact (don't forget the + sign) then export it to the SIM card before I can make a call out.

Hope this helps!

Karl and Matt,
I'm also using the D2G in China, (and I'm also from DC! whattup matt! lol)

I'm going to chime in add that in order for you to get the unlock code from verizon, your account must be in good standing for at least 3 months.

You should have this code handy when you buy your sim card. You might want to ask if you can test a sim card first to make sure the unlock code works. When you pop in the card and startup your phone, it will ask for this code. There are some instances online where people have reported that they have gotten bad unlock codes.

Also I wanted to mention that you want to switch to GSM/UMTS mode (under network mode your options are: Global, CDMA, GSM/UMTS)

I use the normal dialer and don't have issues with first needing to add contacts to the sim card, nor needing to add the + prefix.

Hi guys, I've been digging around in this forum to try to find an answer to this but I haven't yet. I have a Motorola Droid 2 Global which I unlocked successfully. I'm in Mexico now, and I can put in several Telcel SIM cards in and it will recognize them however I cannot get a signal, make any calls or texts. But those SIM cards DO work on other phones. Also I'd like to mention I DID change to GSM. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
