Default D2G Wifi hot spot app

I was traveling with some coworkers this week and had unreliable internet. There was a couple times when at least two of us needed to connect to the internet with our laptops to work on something. One of my coworkers had a Samsung phone on the T-mobile network and he can turn his phone in to a hotspot for free. We were able to use that to connect. There were a few places where he didn't have 3G though and I did. Is there a way to do the same with my Droid 2 Global without paying an extra $20 for the verizon app?
