Default Turning on/off the screen

On my old LG Ally, you could hit the front power button to turn the screen on and off. Real easy to get the screen back on during a call (on hands free) etc. Is there any way to turn the Droid 2 screen on or off other than the hard-to-get-to top power button? If I set the phone to turn off the screen automatically and it turns off during a call, it's a pain to turn on because the button is hard to access. And if I set the screen not to turn off, I have to turn it off manually to save power.
Any suggestions?

The D2 has a sensor in the top-left corner. If you take the phone away from your ear while on a call, the screen should come back on automatically.
