Rooting Your DROID3
Download the One Click Root by psouza4.
With this, you can root/unroot your DROID3.
Then follow these simple instructions.
Note 1) Your phone must be connected via USB data cable to your computer and recognized.
Note 2) If your phone is connected, but not recognized, you may need to install one of these software drivers: LINK to x64 drivers(64-bit)LINK to x86 drivers(32-bit)
Step 1) Download the one-click root package (link above)
Step 2) Extract the contents of the one-click root package to a new folder on your computer.
Step 3) Make sure USB Debugging is enabled on your device. This should be under Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging.
Step 4) From the new folder on your computer, double-click on Pete's Motorola Root Tools to begin the root process.
Step 5) Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the root process.
Unrooting Your DROID3
If you do not have them, re-download the files from above, unfreeze/restore any system apps you froze/deleted, and follow all of the steps until step 6, then continue here:
Step 6) Click "Unroot Phone"
Step 7) Wait for your phone to finish the unroot process.
Installing Safestrap/Recovery
Now that you are rooted, you should install Safestrap.
In short, the Safestrap will essentially preserve your stock system files in a partition where they will not altered by flashing ROMs. ROMs will then be flashed into a “second system” which cannot touch your true system files. To install it, follow these steps:
Step 1) Download the Safestrap.apk and install it.
Step 2) Open the Safestrap and click “Install Recovery.”
Step 3) Reboot your phone. You will see a new splash screen after the Motorola splash screen.
Step 4) Hit the Menu button while this screen is open, and you will boot into the Recovery. NOTE: You MUST enable Safe System via the Safestrap Recovery BEFORE flashing ROMs, or you will alter system files.
For more information about the Safestrap, click here.
Wireless Tethering With Your DROID3
As per the Android Forum admins and mods, I cannot post information about this anymore.
Feel free to contact me with specific questions.
Unbricking/SBFing the DROID3 (Or returning to stock without a Nandroid)
So, you did something you weren't supposed to do, and now you're left with a brick (or you forgot to make a Nandroid, and want to go back to stock).
Download this One Click SBF rar file by psouza4 from XDA, and this SBF file.
This SBF will completely wipe your device and install software version 5.6.890 on your phone.
To use:
Step 1) Make sure you have the most recent Moto drivers installed.
Step 2) Extract the zip to a folder on your computer.
Step 3) Extract all of the SBF contents into the "files" folder in the folder you unzipped.
Step 4) Power down your phone.
Step 5) While holding the Vol + and Vol - buttons, power on your phone.
Step 6) Select "AP Fastboot"
Step 7) Once your phone says it is connect, double click "CLICK HERE - Flash Verizon DROID 3 OTA 5.6.890 to phone.bat"
Step 6) Wait for your phone to reboot, then are back on the Stock OTA 5.6.890 update.
still, SBF file link is not working. While there may be another link, it would be good to have it posted here alongside the rest of the package.
I will take care of this later this afternoon.
If anyone has a working link to the sbf, post it here and I will put a link in the main post.
Otherwise, I will either find a working one, or upload my copy.
3.0 is out for SteelDroid! I think I am gonna flash directly on top of 1.0 without clearing cache or memory, because that's a bitch pain in the ass. I let you know what happens.

Hi what are your guys opinion on these ROMs? I am rooted but I just dont see it worth it to get one of these ROMs, because I am waiting for the "overclocking" feature. Opinions?

Due to the locked bootloader, OverClocking is not in the foreseeable future.

So your saying its totally IMPOSSIBLE? I thought it would just make the devs/hackers work a little harder to find a way. But damn if thats true that sucksss

Currently impossible, yes, unless the devs can find a way to unlock the bootloader, or the less likely possibility that Moto will unlock them for us.

I followed the restore method exactly (as quoted below) and got tons of errors on the droid screen that many files and files.img were not able to be loaded and it completed...said "Done" tried to reboot and is still stuck in Red Motorola Boot logo and will not restore.
What else can I do? Is there anyway to get this Droid 3 restored.

Use RSD Lite instead of the bat file... For instructions on using RSD Lite check out the steel Droid thread.

Don't know what I missing but even with the cable that came with the Droid 3, the root program does not want to detect the phone after selecting USB debugging and then charge only.

Are you plugging your USB cable directly into your machine, or into a hub? I have seen trouble with some machines where the USB hub simply doesn't know how to do the kinds of things that the root program wants to do. Bypass the hub and go straight to your machine.
I will be reworking the entire first post with updated information within the next few days, so please bare with me if some links stop functioning at any time.
Doing the return to stock without a nandroid backup thing didn't actually return to stock for me. My phone is still skinned like I have a custom ROM on it. FUUUU 1% battery increments and it says I am running MavROM.
