Default Best Rom + Kernel Combo?

Hi everyone. I have been a droid eris user for some time now, and have taken it as far as it can go... I got my hands on a new Moto Droid today, and will be rooting it tonight. I have read through many threads on many different sites, trying to find the best roms and kernels, and have found some great info on both. What I haven't seen a lot of are recommendations for what kernels work best with which roms... I want max speed and stability, in a cool looking package... Any recommendations would be very much appreciated! BTW If there was a thread on this, and I missed it, I'm sorry...

well I haven't tried it myself but I've heard that Ultimate Droid 8.0 is the rage these days. Comes stock at 800 mhz. Or you could try Liquid Froyo with a Chevy#1 or P3Droid kernel. Those are some fast kernels you should think about.

your not going to find such info becuase the simple 1 fact in this is that each ROM and kernel runs a little different for each phone. some that are stable for 1 guy will cause reboots for another.

For example, I have nothing but issues with P3 kernels - constant heat and reboots - but Chevy's always work. This is totally opposite or different for another guy. Plus, then throw in the ROM opinion... and that is what you will get.. a bunch of opinions but ones that will not mean much for you as you have to try and see what your phone can tolerate.

In terms of Kernels.. I would only say.. no reason to not go right to 1 ghz as that seems to work for everyone. above 1 - like 1.2 or 1.25 - and stablity can start to break down. but more times than not, you will see 1.0 speeds are stable for everyone. BUT some can run ULV and some cannot and must run LVv kernels. I would also only say, I have - anecdotally - seen a lot of people confirm the stability of Chevy's. Not dogging any other devs kernels, just reporting what I have noticed. it is also my kernel of choice though I am personally getting good stability to a 1.2 from JDLFG right now when NO other 1.2 would work for me.

as for ROMS.. oh man, again, a whole different can of worms.

So really, you just have to download some and try them and find out as it is so different from phone to phone.

I guess what I was looking for was opinions on combinations that have worked for some of you... I know they might not work for me, but seems like a great starting point...

Thank you for all of your responses and help! It's very much appreciated!

I would have to agree with the just try a few and see what you like also give them a little time. I haven't been rooted for very long personally but my phone for some reason likes chevyno1's stuff I haven't had any issues with simply stunning 4.7 from him and it took a few tries to get a kernal that worked happily but my Droid decided the LV1.0Ghz from Chevy was the one I tried a few other Rom's and some would force close for me and some I just didn't like that much. The beauty of the droid is there is no shortage so browse around and find what fits you.

I am currently using a generic FRG22 and it has been perfect:

I added this fix to stop the OTA

Hopefully, you have Root Explorer (and if you don't, I highly recommend it because it's so worth the couple of bucks). Here are the instructions to prevent to the FRG22D OTA update (which I was getting yesterday myself):

1. In Root Explorer, go to /system/
2. Tap Mount R/W at the top, then long-press on build.prop and scroll down to Open in Text Editor
3. Once the file is open as a text file, scroll down until you see the line that says: "ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/voles/sholes/sholes:2.2/FRG01B/45394:user/release-keys" and change it to read as follows:
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/voles/sholes/sholes:2.2/FRG22D/50454:user/release-keys
4. Tap the back key and say "Yes" when it asks you to save (it will automatically back up the original file for you)
5. Tap Mount R/O at the top
6. Reboot

You will no longer get the OTA update notifications, because Verizon will believe you already have it.

I tried LFY 1.6 but it did not respond too well on my phone so I went back to the FRG22. I will most likely change when Pete gets his latest Bugless Beast out.

Kernel wise I have had good luck with P3, Chevy, and Slayher's. The chevy ulv did not work on my phone and my rom seems to run the best with the Slayhers. I am on the 1.6 1000 right now. I tried the 800 and cranked it down to 125 when the screen was off but in looking at the stats on the info tab of setcpu there was very little time spent at 125 for some reason even though the pone sat idle for most of the day. I tried setting the screen off to 125/125 and I had wake up problems on incoming calls.

I must admit I am a bit lazy about changing roms, I hate wiping and setting up.

Good luck!

You really just have to experiment with combos on your Droid. But jdflg's kernels always run flawless on my phone. Take a look in the ROM section to read up on some of the different ROMs and options they have.
