Confused Root without computer?

I had an eris and rooted no problem. No I have D1, and curious if I can root without needing a computer?

No, not if you are on FRG22D. Also the computer must be a PC - no sissy Macs.

As "animal" points out, not with FRG22D. This specific update blocks a "back door" that allowed previous versions (ESE81, FRG01B) to be rooted with a one-button rooting app such as EasyRoot or Universal Androot. For a while, before/during Verizon's OTA FRG22D update, it was possible to sneak-in a PC-free, one-button root if you hadn't been updated yet. By now, essentially all stock D1s have been updated to FRG22D, so you are out of luck.

If you have a PC, you can still do "sort of" a one-button root on FRG22D using something like "Soup or Root," but I think that effort's been abandoned.

Also, those PC-free or one-button roots are often incomplete roots, omitting things such as a busybox install, or even forgetting the remove the dreaded recovery-from-boot.p script that wipes your custom recovery. Neall

no sissy macs?

I am not aware of any PeeCee that can easily be configured to be a dual boot Windowz and OSx... but all Intel Macs can be dual boot easy. So, my "sissy" mac can boot into windowz or OSx. can your Peecee? that alone gets me a 2 in 1 computer. I would not consider that sissy.

I rooted my D1 with Soup Or Root a day or so ago, and RDKamikaze just release a 2.0 for it too, if you look for the post "The official one Click Root" or something like that.

Just to clarify, I am a Mac fan, have been for years. But, I have to disagree with your comment... OSx86
Just one site of many dedicated to running OSX on standard PC hardware.
Pick the right hardware and you can do a vanilla install, ie. from an unmodified retail OSX DVD.
Dual boot? Why limit yourself to just 2...
I have a PC that currently boots XP, Win7 and OSX and could easily boot many of the various linux distros. END MORE HIJACK/

okay.. okay.. you got me.. but I made sure I said 1 extra thing.. "easy" and heck, that looks like some serious effort versus an Intel mac

Soup or Root hasnt been totally abandoned he had to quit developing it further for a while because of a few things. including that he needs to get another D1 to test on. the versions he has out right now work though, considering thats how i rooted and it was a full root.

Much like rooting and ROMs, the pioneers did the hard work. Now days, you can DL a boot disk iso that will do most of the hard stuff for you then swap in the retail DVD. From there, its almost as easy as a real Mac and not much more difficult than getting OSX and Win working CORRECTLY on an intel Mac.

Soup or Root HAS NOT been abandoned. Thanks for not reading page 5 of my thread like the big bold red says to

P.S. I just released 2.04 Beta if anyone wants to try it out.

I thought I might ruffle some feathers with my "sissy mac" comment. The main reason I don't like macs is that they are twice as expensive as a PC with comparable hardware, so I think they're a waste of money. Also I have been using PCs since the MS-DOS days, and I'm just not a fan of Apple Inc in general.

As others stated, PCs can multi-boot different OS, I dual boot into Ubuntu and Windows (Vista unfortunately).

Anyway, no offense if you use a mac, I'm just not a fan. Hell, you're lucky you're flush enough with cash to afford such an expensive (IMO way overpriced) computer.

I live in both worlds. If you investigate the link I posted, you'll see you can in fact install OSX on cheaper PC hardware, with a little hacking that is... Thus the Hackintosh moniker.

I never said I bought them

no offense, I was just stirring the pot. but I can sense your long standing PC love and anti Apple vibe - so no big deal

just FYI, also if you think about it, with the "cost" comment and poo pooing the price, I also got 2 computers. A mac and a pc. So, in the end, it is kind of a wash if cost is an issue as buying 1 got me 2.

anyway.. what were we talking about here?

but it is a G3 - which is about 5+ models back now as we are into Mac Pro's with 12 cores. As a comparison, that is like a VW Bug versus a Ferrari

And the 2000+ VW Bugs are ridiculously re-tar-ded and need repairs all the time!! So if you needed to get an old Mac and run a beetle-style life, do it right and get Macintosh SE.

Well excuse me For what I need it for its perfect. I mostly just use it for doing homework, and such. I would really like to get a Mac Book Pro. but when you drive a car like mine that only gets 7 miles per gallon it adds up fast....

heres a pic for those of you interested(its just a crappy cell phone pic from a while back though)

1970 Chevelle SS. its my pride and joy, and my first car and daily driver. So far shes been to Hot August nights twice. And I drove her both times.

Im planning a 496 Stroker, with a 6-71, Dual Holleys, and a 4spd they way I have it planned I should be close to just shy of 950HP on race gas.

Is that your FJ on that page? I gotta say I like the red, there is a guy that goes to my school who has a Powder blue/white FJ like that. I have always had a soft spot for those.

yep, that's mine. Freeborn Red - original FJ color. Chevy 350 small block crate, Edlebrock 4 barrel carb - just 1 reason - next to the 33" tires and low 4/10 gearing - I get crap mileage, yada yada yada.. all the specs are there my bikes - bicycles - are my pride and joy as I put more miles on a bike than a car per year, but that rig is certainly the only rig to ever turn my eye since I was a kid. I'd take a mint FJ40 over any car on the market.

I'm sooooo jealous of you guys, I got stuck with an old folk's car.

It used to get 70mpg when I was on hydrogen, but now it gets 28 on E85 or 30 on gas

LOL wow i know this is an old post but really dude. My PC runs osx and windows took me ten minutes to do. I did boot camp the other day on my buddy's macpoop pro and it took me 4 hours to get it all done. PLUS it didn't let me do it unless it was an non-slipsteamed verzion of sp2. Crapintosh sucks just get off you high hourse and realize it. Your OS is as dead as the creator.(all respect though to Jobs as i have a pc thanks to him but Gates made it better).

Question Really? wow...

Yeah I also do know that this thread is pretty old. But I just have to say that I can't believe that it could get so far off subject, because you children wanted to argue over who's toy is better. HELLO!?!... Wasn't this supposed to be a thread for rooting a device without a computer? I think it deserves a new name. What do you think?... not very helpful to someone actually looking for useful information as apposed to someone desiring to read a forum-based battle of mine is better... just thought I would throw my two-cents into the bucket also, seeing as how I had already wasted my time to read your debate in the hopes of advice. Instead I seen how immature some kids can be over a matter of opinion.
