How long should I allow a new kernel to work before determining if it has improved my phone??

It should be right away.

That being said, I've rarely noticed any significant differences between most kernels of similar speed. I usually settle in to an 1000-1100 clock speed but used to always push 1200 or 1250. I feel like I have more stability with the same 'feel' as when I was clocked higher.

If you have problems with tethering, wifi connectivity, or other similar but minor problems then changing kernels might be the first step in troubleshooting.

These just came out. I recommend the 1.2ghz med volt. Stable with high performance. I plan on getting an upgraded battery from verizon this friday to handle the load.

I recommend using a new kernel for a full day (as long as its stable once you boot up) to see if it meets your needs... just messing with it for an hour or so will not produce your real world usage.
