Default Rom Manager Substitute

i have ROM Manager installed but when i go to install Clockworkmod Recovery (says "current Recovery: unknown) i get "unable to contact server. Please make sure that you have a stable internet connection!"

So my question is there an alternative way to get Clockworkmod?
Am i just missing something here?

Which phone do you have?
ROM Manager seems to cause a lot of problems, so I highly recommend to avoid it.
To get to CWM, power-off the phone, then try Volume Down + Power key combo.

I'm not familiar with phone models other than my own, so maybe I'm missing something, but wasn't a recovery installed when you rooted?

As far as getting ROM Manager to connect, do you have a stable connection? You could also try wifi. Or perhaps you need to reinstall ROM Manager if it is malfunctioning (you don't have it blocked with DroidWall, do you? I've embarrassed myself a few times that way). Alternatively, perhaps the subforum for your phone would have info about an alternative source of CWM files for your model that you could download and flash from a card. I know there's a site like that for the DInc.

Hold "X + power key" to get into recovery.

Try uninstalling then reinstalling ROM Manager. If downloading the latest version of Clockwork Recovery doesn't work out, try downloading one of the older/experimental builds.
