Cry I'm really new to this, where do I start?

So I'm really new to this and I'm really interested in customizing my Samsung Nexus S that I just got a week ago. The problem is, I don't know where to start.

I've browsed this section and all I see is words and numbers that I do not understand at all; words that make me go

So can someone please help me start? Perhaps show me where to start, a brief explanation to some words, etc.

Your help would greatly be appreciated, thanks in advance
