I haven't followed that massive thread over there too well, but does anyone know why he got rid of the WiFi tether (around 6 or 7) and if he plans on putting it back on? I'd certainly ask over there but don't have an account. And, if it's still there, can someone show me how to use it?
i just installed one of teh various 2.1 versions yes! but the real one! not just some 2.0.1 with 2.1 it is sooo easy now!
There isn't any "the real one" 2.1 ROMs out there. They are all ported over from some other phone. The truth is, for the time-being, there is probably little to no difference between installing a 2.0.1 ROM with all the 2.1 goodies, versus installing one of the 2.1 ROMs out there.
I have very high expectations for what the "real" 2.1 ROM is going to be like for the DROID. I'm hoping it blows all of these current 2.1 ROMs out of the water. Meaning, that it is very optimized for our specific phone. I'll probably be totally disappointed...
How is it for you? I really want to install 2.1...just am scared of bugs
Nothing to be scared of ... it's just that there are about 10 of them out there to choose from. And I find it peculiar that some of us have such different experiences with the same ROM. For instance, my favorite 2.1 ROM is from humancycborg. But some guys thought it was laggy, or buggy, or whatever. You just have to find which one works best for you. THAT is the real challenge. For now, I'm content with the latest 2.0.1 ROMs that have hit the scene. Checkout THIS THREAD for details.
What do you guys think of the multi-touch gallery? Is it better than the 2.1 gallery?
I'm deciding whether I want to upgrade to v5 or not. Another bummer is that the news/weather widget only works for the weather, and I only use it for the news
I upgraded to .8.1 and I must not understand which gallery is loaded. I thought the fun one was the multi-touch one with all the cool sorting and viewing functions, but it's just a big bunch of tumbnails that are multitouch.
I backed up but don't see that on one of my backed up apps with Astro.
Damnit...
I still have .5, but that would require a re-load of my apps, no?

The multitouch gallery is the one that's loaded. It supports pinch-zoom.
The 'fun' one you're describing is the 2.1 gallery. It has nicer 3D effects, but does not support pinch-zoom.
As for reverting back to an older version, if you don't have a nandroid backup with all your apps loaded, you'll have to reload them.
It's a pretty good habit to just make a backup once you have everything in working order, so that if you ever break it, you can just go back!

OK, I do have a nandroid backup. Did it before I moved from 0.5 to 0.8.
But all I really want to do is enable the 2.1 gallery. If I restore from that backup, I assume that I will restore to the 0.5 ROM, yes? Is there a way to have 0.8 running with the 2.1 gallery?

Yeah, just find the apk and install the 2.1 gallery. It's available at alldroid.
I just uninstalled a few apps I didn't want in the last update. If I update to this one, I'll have to uninstall those same apps again huh. I'll do a nandroid backup just in case.
Downloaded and installed only to brick it. Restored from the backup I just made. I'll leave it at that.

Weird...mine is running fine on 8.2! I've rebooted three times since installing it (went into recovery to do a nandroid of it, and another couple times to test that it was working OK).
Others have posted success as well...must be an intermittent issue. Glad he caught it quickly.
It just stayed at the motorola symbol. i downloaded it then extracted the update.zip. I put it on the card and rebooted to install it.
Just curious - So you used sprecovery to enable update.zip install and then executed the update.zip install and the install completed, and then when you selected reboot from the recovery menu you got stuck at the moto logo - never got to the boot animation?
He's uploaded an 8.2 nandroid if you want to try that....
Wow ... I almost just got totally bummed out! Thank goodness for nandroid backups!
(Still using 0.4) I just booted into recovery and tried to push my custom framework-res.zip file to change my notification bar icons. I've been doing this to the past 5 to 10 ROMs that I've installed, no big deal. So I'm finally getting around to doing it to this one. After pushing the file, I reboot and my DROID goes into the infinite loop of boot animation! WHAT THE ?!?!?!?!
Fortunately, I was able to do a nandroid restore of just the system partition and she booted up just fine. All back to normal.
But now I'm really starting to wonder what the heck Pete is doing here. ??? I tried updating to 0.8, but AdFree stopped working and I couldn't get a file written where it needed to be. And now, my custom framework-res.zip file can't get pushed to the phone without semi-bricking it. Hhmmn...

Yeah that's what I did...I just did it over with the new update. I was scared from a minute because it sat there but all is well now.

sorry i didn't mean the real one like 2.1 from android or whatever, i meant its not a bunch of 2.1 parts mixed in with 2.0.1. its a 2.1 rom. its nice, its smooth, barcode scanner isn't working as well. gtalk didn't work as well, but it seems few restarts and it works better, multitouch browser that installed and then reinstalled on 2.1 sucks, it kinda broke it haha. but its ok, i am going to fix it asap, i have a nandroid back up of 2.0.1 so yeah. i guess we will see what happens. i am liking it, its smooth

Something's not right here. Just sayin'...
8.1 and I think 8.0 had problems due to a problem w/symbolic links and busybox.../system was full right at install. That was the main problem Pete fixed in 8.2.
Then the infinite loop w/8.2 was supposedly due to Pete putting the bootanimation.zip file in two places in the ROM, if I understand his explanation. That is fixed in the current 8.2 download. <phew>
Glad 8.2 installed and ran smoothly for me! Spending too much time on the droid as (or so my wife tells me!).

I did the same thing! It looks like the alldroid thread is going berserk about it on page 50 or so?
I guess you were supposed to remove any files he moved to /data/app in previous versions before pushing the update file.
Thank heavens for nandroid!
I think I'm gonna hold at v8.0 until he figures out whats wrong

Be Nice!!!
I keep getting the infinite boot screen too. Haven't had any previous version so I shouldn't need to omit any /data/app files. Don't think it's ready yet.
I've been running 0.8.2 at 1GHz all evening. SMOKIN'!!!
I'll go checkout 0.8.3. See if it is different enough to make the move.
Did you have to do anything special to make the overclock boot image work well w/v8? Have you been monitoring temperatures at all? E.g., sensor list from the market.

I've been running v0.8.3 at 1GHz for a while now. Any of the overclock boot images will break wifi, so you'll need to flash the tiwlan_drv.ko file that is provided in the overclock thread.
Other than that, it's all good from there on. After a particularly tasking amount of use, I took a look at the temperature of the CPU with sensor list and it was running at 37 C. That's a bit warmer than at stock, but well within reasonable temperatures.
As for battery life, it doesn't seem to have suffered too much compared to stock. I've been using my phone moderately for about 5 hours and I've used 30% of my battery.
I'm still running v6.
I've loaded v8 twice.
Got the boot loop the first time and did a nandroid restore to v6
The second time i did the factory wipe then used nandroid restore method and lost all of my apps. Redownloading them is a major PITA so i went back to v6 again.
I'm confused on what files he needs me to delete so I can just do a (no data loss) update.zip. I have root explorer. Any help?
