Default Can I fix my crazy phone by flashing a custom rom?

Hello forum, I'm hoping you can help me with a problem I'm having with my original Motorola Droid. A couple of days ago, my phone started to act funny when I tried to open up various apps, i.e. Settings would open up Browser, screens would jump around, and then finally my lock screen would claim that I drew my pattern incorrectly 5 times and I would have to try again in 30 seconds without me even touching the thing. My phone is now unusable because of this. I did a little research and came to the tentative conclusion that I had been infected with malware called Dream Droid. I am not positive this is the case, but it seems the most likely explanation. My first Droid did this same thing to me, the phone I have now is a replacement. Now, on to the questions:

1: Will flashing a custom rom fix this problem?

2: Is rooting absolutely required to flash a custom rom? The research I have done myself has yielded that rooting needs to be done through the phone itself, but since the phone is unusable I can't do that.

3: What custom rom should I use if I want better speed and longer battery life?

4: If flashing a custom rom will not fix the problem, what will? I can't afford to buy a new phone right now, and I can't afford to go without one due to the nature of my job.

I appreciate any help I can get on this topic, and I apologize for the absurdly long post.

Flashing a Custom ROM will only if you also wipe data - otherwise the app that pulled in the virus will pull it in again.

You're better off performnig a factory reset and then researching the apps you keep installing as one of them is no doubt leading you to get infected since it has happened more than once.

There is also the possibility that your hardware is actually messed up, in which case no amount of flashing will fix it - you'll need to replace the phone. Again.

As far as Flashing is concerned, yes, to flash a ROM you need to be rooted.

As for which ROM you want to use, that is going to be up to you - there is no way to definitively say "This ROM has the best battery life" or "That ROM has the best features" because we're not you - we can say "We like this ROMs X,y and Z features" or "On our phone, with these 80+ apps installed, this ROM performed the best in terms of Battery life", but that may not mean squat, if you only have 2 of those apps installed out of the 80 that I list. Such a topic is completley subjective, as there are too many variables involved, including but not limited to 1) phone usage, 2) phone age, 3) battery age, 4) refubished phone versus new phone, 5) previous overclocking, 6) apps installed, 7) charging habits, and many, many more variables. You really have to figure this out for yourself, no one can tall you for sure that this is the best or that one is not. Aesthetics also plays a major role in people's choices, but not mine, as I want pure performance.

Again, if doing a custom ROM / Factory reset does not help, you need to replace the phone.

I have had the same symptoms two times....

1) Moisture of any kind on the screen...

2) Had phone plugged into a non compatible charger...

Just two things to consider before embarking on the rooting/ROMing quest...
