When I go to apply it from the sdcard it gives me an error saying it can't verify the signature and stops the update

"I have tryed this method and its not working. I have done everything correctly. When I try and apply the update.zip file it says the signature failed and aborts the update. Any idea how to get around this? Thankyou…."

"Try downloading this update.zip and retry the process:
http://www.sholes.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/update.zip

It could be a problem with the embedded signature."

Sounds like whats happening to you, so give that update a try.

When I did this I accidentally only downloaded the superuser tools instead of the droid root. Make sure you have the correct file renamed to update.zip unlike I did at first. If you did try to just download a different link.

Make sure it's update.zip and not update.zip.zip, and that the file is intact (the one I used looks to be 10.1MB, fwiw.)

In truth, I can't recall. I'm seeing 10,600 specifically. (I think it may have been alldroid, but the specific link seems to be down now.) I've had a folder full of root-related files sitting on my desktop a while waiting for me to get a little bit more familiar with android...

Google rootyourdroid and there is a very good resource on the subject by that name.

If I root my droid, will I have to reload all my apps?

Just rooting, no - if you install a new image (say, the 2.1 image or a custom image with other tweaks from other places) then most likely yes.

Correction - I only lost a few of my apps, those that I specifically 'manually' installed - all others were still there. (this is with updating the OS with a new 3rd arty ROM).
