I'm new to the Droid A855 because previously I had the Incredible but it became water damaged so I decided to go with the the Droid 1 for the time being to get by. Before I have even used it, I know that I want to overclock it to speed it up to more of what I'm used to with my Incredible. Plus I figured this would be a simple phone to learn how to root with. Now that being said, I have no clue as to what I'm doing. Absolutely none. I'm a Mac user, so I'm ignorant to some of the simplest things when it comes to files on a PC.
If someone could point me in the right direction to the instructions on how to root for a person less experienced than a noob even. Right now I just want to overclock and delete pre-installed programs but I'm sure eventually once I catch on I will want to do some more customization. But before that happens, I need to figure out even the simplest terminology.
Thank you and I look forward to any help possible for this seems like it will be a great learning experience.
In the rooting section go to Did FRG83D break root for you? Try this app!
there is info on rooting with a mac. When picking a rom remember the droid 1 doesn't handle gingerbread to well, imo i would stivk with a froyo rom like charity which you can find here.
Scratch that, Does anyone know of a youtube video on how to from start to finish with a fresh droid FRG83G root and then install cynagen ROM or whatever it's called. If someone could come up with this that would be great because I'm plain and simple a visual guy.
Did you try the z4 root app. download the app click root and let it's magic work. when your rooted download rom manger from the market and install. download what every rom you choose and remember where you downloaded it to your phone. in rom manger scroll down to install rom from sd. then find the rom you download click on it. a box will come up check all 3. wipe dalvik, back up and wipe data. click ok. when it is all done it will restart and ask for your google id. and then sync.

Hmmm, this gives me pause. . . . First off, you started another thread asking how to root with a Mac in which I already replied, I guess we'll call that thread done and I will ask it to be closed so we can keep all your info in one thread. Second file handling on a Mac is very similar to a PC, PC's are easier than a Mac IMHO.
You can root your A855 with a Mac using one of the two best methods, either this one here:
You just have to modify one of those methods to be as if you were running a Linux box with the extra syntax needed for a Mac. I have googled it before, you can too, the info is out there.
Finally, whatever you do, do NOT use a video guide!!! I was going to say, "unless you know what you're doing" but you already said you do not. the reason being is that most of the youtube (and other) videos are never updated/deleted for the newer android OS methods to root and at this rate, never will.

I have scoured dozens of sites looking for help with rooting and installing a new ROM for my phone. I have finally given up since the answers do not appear to be out there. I have been able to root, but have had no luck with flashing the ROM. I get a signature not verified error or a 7 something error.
Here is what I did:
I used superoneclick to root the phone. I then downloaded ROM manager and backed up my phone. I tried to download Peter Alfonsos latest ROM 17 but when I opened it up there where 2 folders and was not sure what to pull in. I tried GPA 16 and that didn’t work either. I went to reinstall my original ROM and was not able to pull it off from clockwordmod. Luckily, I used TB and it did bring back my ROM. (I was lucky I did that or I would f’ed right now)
Question:
What am I doing wrong? Is my root bad? I keep seeing something about Nandroid, but my recovery reboot does not give me that option. Do I need to re-root? All the comments and instructions seem to be from mid 2010 and in old versions of ROM manager. Can someone please help?
Thanks.
What is happening is that you do not have a custom recovery installed on your phone, or since you used super one click, it is not sticking once you do flash it; that is the major downfall of super one click. TiBu did not restore your ROM, just your data. This is why your rom installs are failing with error 7 and you do not see an option to do a real nandroid backup while in recovery.
Two ways to fix it; One, in Rom Manager, go to settings and make sure you are in advanced mode, then go to the bottom and flash alternate recovery, then back to the top and flash clockwork recovery, then before doing ANYTHING else go ahead and try to flash the rom from Rom Manager. Or two, go to my site and in the advanced guides section, use the install custom recovery manually guide.
good luck

Thanks Teddy. I'll give it a shot. It's been real frustrating.

Looks like to get advanced mode, I will neat to purchase the premium version. I have no problem paying soemone for their work, however I went online to his site and so a bunch of negative reviews. Should I go ahead and do that or go to your instructions. BTW-do you have a link? Thanks.
Yes, you are correct, for advanced mode you do need to purchase it, but don't. I purchased it way back so I can't remember if you _used_ to have to for advanced mode.
So as far as my link, it's a shame that once one posts in a thread at this site, subsequent posts no longer show their signature lines; you can either look above until you see a post of mine with the sig (and link) in it, or I guess I can give you the direct link:

My internet went down a couple of days ago here, hope to be fixed today. Your virus alarms are false positives based on the rooting files I host in my directory.
