I have been on the fence for weeks deciding to root or not. I wasn't really afraid of bricking but being able to get dev support in the future if my phone starts acting stupid. I took the plunge last night and rooted both wife's phone and my own usinig SMu. It only took me 20 minutes and I did donate to the devs for their fantastic work. I've got both phones running profiles maxed out at 800 using the 2.03sholes. I will admit the 2.1 launcher is a bit choppy but once it gets going it flows real nice. I'm digging the smoke glass theme for now, rockin skinned beautiful widgets. I'm the farthest thing from a tech nerd but this app with so much help with this forum made it so so easy! I do have questions:
When SMU is updated in market, is the updated ROM embedded in update or is it just the application itself being updated.
Can someone who created profiles in SetCpu post screenshot so people can make sure they check the right boxes, set governor correctly etc.. i think this would eliminate some future questions.

OK, that's good. The next thing I would try would be to uninstall the app, reboot, and then re-install it. See where that goes and let me know...
BTW, are you running a custom Rom, or is that what you have planned?
uninstalling as I type this, then I'll reboot and install again and let's see how it goes (but i've done this already), I'm new to Droid world, I was a blackberry user for 4 years and I'm learning this new toy and I gotta tell ya, I love it! I've seen people saying they are running their droid at 800MHz - 1GHz I want to try it too, that's the reason that I came to become a droid user, to play with the phone and thats what I want to do...
@dubbsix: Try this: pull the battery, repower on while holding the 'x' key. This should get you to the SP recovery menu. Sholesmod makes a backup before installing, if I'm not mistaken, so go down the menu to backup/restore and choose 'simple nandroid restore.' Hopefully, this will return you to the backed-up rooted but pre-rom state.
Thanks for your help. I really thought I bricked my droid. I was about to take a hammer to it and say i dropped it for the insurance! What i did was basically reset to official 2.01 then ran through the process again. For some reason it worked this time and Im really LOVIN the custom rom.
Anyone else a lil worried about running a custom rom on a phone that most likely will 'touch' your bank account info and other sensitive information?
I thought about this, but I guess there is no real gurantee that Google isnt doing that with the official roms

No, when you update SMU, and launch it for the first time, it will check Sholes for a new Rom, or Recovery image. If they're available, it will ask if you would like to download them. After they download to your SD Card, you can update to the new Rom.
Can someone who created profiles in SetCpu post screenshot so people can make sure they check the right boxes, set governor correctly etc.. i think this would eliminate some future questions. The latest version, 1.4.6 has a better user interface than the older version. You may want to see if the update is on the market yet. If it helps, I have mine set at: Settings/Auto Detect
Set on Boot
Profiles: Charging 1000/8000 Sleep-Standby 800/250 Power < 25% 550/250 Failsafe Profile 550/250 Battery > 40c 550/125
I hope this helps you out!

Yeah, I gave my Storm to a friend, got the Droid. Rooted it the day we could, and have never looked back.....

Thanks for the SMU answer but as far as SetCpu, i made profiles like you did (I actually stole PsychoKitty's profiles) but i thought it woud be nice for noobs like me to see a screen shot because in SetCpu you have to:
check=SET ON BOOT
cpugovernor=ONDEMAND
Go into profiles:
check= PROFILES ON
Create your profiles by hitting modify then
check=ENABLED for each profile you want to run.
I think people can follow a screenshot easier just sayin...
No I do not, all i apps I have installed are the follow:
3
advanced task killer
astro
barcode scanner
car locator
droidlight
Galery/music from 2.1 OS
root explorer
seesmic
shazam
SM Updater
superuser permissions (could it be this app giving me a hard time?)
terminal emulator

No, you wouldn't see it in applications, you would see it if you booted your phone into recovery.
Here's another thing to try: Download the Sholes 2.0.3 image and get it onto your sd card. It should end in .tar, or .tgz. If when you download it it ends in .zip (some browsers do this), just change the suffix to .tar
If you have the "Nadroid Recovery Image" installed on your phone (invisible) you could just install the Rom from recovery, as it contains SMUpdater...

This is just my personal preferences. You can tweak them however you'd like. I find these to be the safest and most effective for me. Again it depends on your wants and needs. Hope this helps!

Nice work thanks! I'm assuming your charging profile is set to 1000mhz max so you can still use the phone in the fast mode while charging or else that's just a waste?

My understanding is that if your minimum is set to 550 and your max is 1000, it throttles up and down within this range, as needed. I could be wrong. My biggest concern is battery life, after performance of course. I don't see any reason not to have the maximum performance while charging.
I would try rebooting it and see if it comes back..
Thanks, 3g is back. However I noticed 2 things today, first my alarm clock icon is gone. second most of my contacts are missing. however when I go to add the contacts back in, as I enter their names back in the phone numbers are coming in automatically. any ideas on how i can get the rest of my contacts back whose names I don't realize yet are missing? In case I didn't mention it, I do love this app. and went and paid the $5 for it after using it for a day.

I'm glad that things worked out for you with the 3G. It's a known glitch.
As well, I'm glad you like the app, and paid for it. I have no connection to Sholes whatsoever, but respect their work, and believe that people should be rewarded for their hard work.
As for the alarm clock, the icon may be gone, but you should still find the original app in the drawer. Just drag it to your home screen like you did the first time...
As far as your contacts go, have you tried to go to settings/Accounts & Synch, and making sure that the checkboxes are checked? While your their, make sure that your Gmail account is checked to synch automaticly.
Let me know how you make out, one way or another...
;^)

So I installed Sholes two days ago and everything has been running smoothly and I love it.
But today when I was supposed to wake up for school...I didn't. I went to check and see if I turned off my alarm for that day on accident but then I noticed that the alarm clock application is no where to be seen on my phone. Lol

Any suggestions on how I can get it back?
I'm running the Sholes Rom too and, at least on my phone, and in the app drawer I have the "Clock" app, that has an alarm feature.
Has anyone had any issues with your wifi on 2.02? I keep getting a disconnect constantly, i will test some other devices to make sure its not my new router. I want to move up to 2.03 now, i noticed my internal memory went from 139mb before rooting and rom installing down to 39mb. I thought everything i would be installing would go directly onto my sd card, Is that correct? Last question, should i remove old roms from my sd card, foe example, remove 2.02 when i download and install 2.03? thanks guys
IM installing 2.03 now, when it comes to the question wipe data, select yes if your using 2.1, which i guess technically i am now, should i select wipe this time? when i went from unrooted 2.01, to the sholes mod 2.02 i did not wipe the data because i was not using 2.1. i hope i did not make a mistake.
i wish i would have hit save data, going to take hours to reset everything like i had it. can i re-flash and get back to my previous settings, or once i wiped the data, i have to go back and re- OC, re do all my accounts etc etc? I guess you live and learn through this process. At least i know now

You should still be OK. Before the Rom is written, it makes a backup on your SD card. It will be located in the "nandroid" folder and named sonthing like "preinstall-BDS-XXXXXXXX-XXXX.
You can just reboot into recovery and (boot while holding the "X" key and select backup/restore. Select Advanced Android Restore, and it will bring you to a list of all of your backups.
Help with using Sholes if already rooted and custom
I'm already rooted and using Greek35T_REV.0.0.41 custom ROM. I'm considering switching over to Sholes updater for simplicity and some of the features built in. Looking for advice on whether I can just run Sholes updater and if not what I would need to do.

You should just run SMUpdater and it will rewrite over Greek's Rom. However I would suggest that when you install the Rom, and it reboots, you will be presented with several menu's. One will be to save data, or erase it. Since I believe that Greek's Rom is based on 2.1, I suggest erasing it. In fact, it's always a good idea to erase/wipe anytime your switching Rom's from one Dev's to anothers.
SMU will automaticly back up your system, so you can allways go back if you want to.
I would also suggest that before you do it (if you haven't already) to download Astro File Manager from Market and do a backup of your apps to save you from having to re-download them from the Market.
Why does my MAP keep FCing on me with 2.03 very annoying... going back to 2.02 until fix is implemented
It's a known bug that's easy to cure. Just go to the application Manager and uninstall it, or the updates, whatever your presented with. Then go to Market and re-install it. I just currently updated to the new version 4.0, and it works awesome!
Also, if you downloaded 2.0.3 the first day it was released, i believe that it was pulled, and then replaced to fix this issue. If you have the "older" version, you may just want to update it to the revised one...

Okay, I took the plun...blah, blah, blah
So after using SMUpdater (install went great, thanks Sholes team) I installed SetCPU. The issue seems to be that SetCPU will not allow me to OC the Droid. It says my Max is only the 550. Can someone help me out here, I want some of that 800MHz action.

Sure thing!
Go to the SetCPU menu for device selection, and set it to autodetect.

Hey thanks doctor, after playing around with it, i think im going to continue after this wipe. I now have 161 free mb's on internal memory which is great. All of my apps downloaded within a half hour, i simply re-signed on my emails, facebook and bam everything was back on my phone. the only thing i was missing was my configuration, or how i had my icons and widgets and settings set up on pages. This just allows me to re customize a bit and make things better a second time around and get a fresh start with memory. I guess i will delete the 2.02 and 2.03 files off my sd card? i figure once its flashed into memory there is no need for them taking up space? I also am still having issues with wifi, i wish i could figure it out but i will connect for a second and then it drops and says "remembered but out of range" . I do have a new linksys/cisco router, i have heard about some connection issues with this router in the past but i have flashed it with the newest firmware which supposed to have fixed it. none of of my other wireless devices seem to have issues with it so far. IF anyone has had wifi issues with sholes mods, please any advice would be appreciated, otherwise im very happy being a first time root/new rom guy. thanks

I'm connected right now using it without issues. I have mine set up with a different SSID, and am running on channel 12. Maybe changing the channel will help because of possible interferance ?

I tried that and there was nothing in my application manager for maps... also what are the differences really besides 2.02 and 2.03?
Also what about implementing krazykrivd's launcher into a theme

You would have to go to www.sholes.info to look at the change log of the differences, but from what I remember, they were fairly substantial. Maps was one of them once they got it correct 2.0.3 up.
As for the theme, you can run whatever you like. I'm using MetaMorph because of the low overhead on the processor. Smoked Glass Blue theme..
