Default Lost status/notification bar after GPA17 install

device = Droid 1
prev rom = BB v.05; status/notification area was ok.

wiped cache, installed GPA17 (2.3.5); lost status/notification area; rebooted several times, still no bar on top, but everything else is fine.

installed scholes overnight 2.3.7 (from peter alfonso site); rebooted, still no bar on top.

installed a theme for ADW launcher, thinking status/notification area would be associated with it; rebooted, still no bar on top.

anybody know a fix for getting the status/notification area working again?

p.s.
because there is no dropdown, I cannot enable usb for sd card use (I have to physically remove sd card and install/apply .zip files each time).
