Default Xoom Tethering from Droid?

I have two questions that are related:

I have the original Droid and am having a problem rooting it and tethering my Xoom off of it. When I try to root the droid it doesnt seem to root. What is the latest way to do this with an app or whatever? And what do you recommend for tethering it to the Xoom?

The second question is that my contract is up and I can upgrade phones. I have the unlimited data on my account and am satisfied with the phone, but is there a better phone for tethering with the xoom the way I want to with the original droid?

Thanks for the help!

Rooting varies by model - moved your thread here to the Droid All Things Root section.

I have not tried to tether to a Zoom, but here are a few things I learned getting my Droid to Tether to my Nook-

1 - Droid will only support an Ad-Hoc network. Some devices don't like Ad-hoc networks. My nook needed some code changed in some setting I don't remember to get it to see the Ad-hoc.

2- I had a #2, but I forgot. I'll see if I can find that setting from #1...

Oh, and once you get root for the Droid - I use Barnacle as my tether app. Free and it does a good job. I tryed a few others, many seems buggy. Barnacle works good, though. sucks down the battery, though.
