So someone walked me step by step to root my phone but i dont see what is so special about this. i did research this before i did it but i dont know where to get anything to upgrade my phone such as fonts or other things. can u please help me!!
Your phone should be running faster and smoother, and you now have wifi tethering for free! Isn't that enough? I like the stock look but I'm sure others will be along soon to help you mod the phone some more. Judging by some of the screen shots some post around here you'll have lots of good advice and options.

Hey, welcome to the world of "root". Yeah, I suppose you would look at that like there is nothing special. If you use the Droidmod uploader...you will get a 2.0.1 fairly plain looking rom...this is just a base rom that you can theme...but looks aside, you can do things like overclock your processor. I am usually running at 1.2GHz (stock is 550MHz). My phone is more than twice as fast as a stock phone. You really have to start reading posts on various roms, apps, etc. to get an idea of all you can do.
Here is what I'm currently running. Ultimate ROM 3.7 @ 1.2GHz. Most ROMS are available on All Droid Forums so you have to bounce over there to download...but come back! This is a better forum!

That's where all the magic is...
He said he's got the Droidmod rom and if you have used it (I just tried it today)...it's pretty plain jane looking and if you didn't know all you could do, it might not seem like much. I wish I could put something in writing that emphasied just how much better a rooted droid is.
Hey...Multi-touch browser and gallery...done! That's a start

I HATE to do this to you...but I can't type everything out that you need to do. Luckily...I can point you toward some good info. Follow this guide and you will end up with a solid, fast, good-looking rom. After you get there...you'll start to understand. I seriously flash several roms every day to test out new features and see what the REAL android tems is working on. The developers on this forum and others are incredible...fast updates and new capabilities added daily. I can't wait to see where we are in 1 week, 1 month, 6 months, etc...
Just remember that the stock Droid was good...now it will get MUCH better! Follow directions carefully and READ...really try to learn what you are doing to your phone cause KNOWING...really comes in handy

Gotcha. I haven't used droidmod anything (call me a fanboy of Pete I guess )
The main reason that I rooted was to enable wifi tethering which, if you're not familiar with it, allows you to share the droid's internet connection to other computers through wifi.
I've been a big fan of the Bugless Beast roms, they change the look of the interface, including a black notification bar and can include a "smoked glass" theme, enabling transparencies and generally cleaning up the look of the phone.
In addition, you get two additional home screens with most of these roms.
If you know what overclocking is, then you might be impressed with the fact that we can run our phones at over twice the rated clock speed.
----Didn't Joe make a thread about all the things you can do with root, something to the effect of "What I've done with my droid now that it's rooted" I'll have to find that for you.
There's a lot more....I'm sure others will fill in the gaps

Yes, but it is still a little buggy on some roms...that's why I pointed you to the "Bugless" rom.
Some roms are great...some suck (maybe they are works in progress...) but you'll learn all of that...just get Bugless Beast v0.5 on you phone by following the post above.
u mean, from stock to bugless beast? that thread? sorry to be such a twirp, im really interested in this and i wanna learn and keep up with the jonses' lol
Follow instructions on installing kernels and that will get you going faster...then you just customize and read the post here in the "root" section. Just see what people are chatting about and feel free to ask specific questions inside the posts. The people here should be willing to help

I was (still am) a Pete fan! His stuff is great but I have been testing roms lately and seeing what else is out there. Droidmod 1.0 is okay...good, stable, decent looking...but it is 2.0.1 and I have moved on to 2.1 for most use. Many dev's are adding nice apps into their builds, different kernels, looks, etc.
Having said that...Pete just released Bugless Beast 2.1 rom v0.5. I just d'loaded it and can't wait to stop typing so I can check it out...lots of changes since 1.0 (the last time I used it). Ultimate Rom v3.7 is great too! I had version 2.5.2 and that was cool but not complete. Blackdroid updated several times and the roms were not really functional but he refined it and 3.7 is a personal favorite!

No...you don't NEED to do anything. You CAN do a lot of different things. FIRST...you need to get familiar with Recovery. That is why I pointed you to that link...it goes step by step...the long way.
You updated with a single app...which is cool but you didn't learn much right? I think the updater you used is nice but you need to learn what you are truly doing to get full enjoyment out of this.

Okay so the link I gave you shows you how...but doesn't go into much "learning". Check out this link:

+1 to all who've helped me learn what to do...now I'm trying to learn how to theme, etc...love my OC'ed droid though, running BB 1.1, largely because the LEDs didn't work in 2.1-0.3, and I live by those. Now that 0.4 is out, think I'll go take a peek at the update log.

No Problem. Did you get a better idea of what you can do with root access and custom roms?
My recommendation...play with nandroid and download some other roms to flash. You want to make sure you have a back up application to back up your apps and settings (I use MyBackup Pro but there are other options that may or may not be better).
Also when you want to flash to a new rom, use a different kernel for overclocking...DO A NANDROID BACKUP! This is very important because virtually anything you do can be undone and reverted back to the way your phone was (including settings, home page layouts, etc.).
You'll pick things up quick I'm sure!
Let me know if you have any issues and I will do my best to help or at least point you in the direction to link you up with smarter individuals than me.

Yes, you can do exactly that. The key is to understanding the new recovery interface that will be installed after you use the droidmod updater. Get familiar with Recovery and Nandroid backups. Most developers post instructions for installation. Not all roms nandroid backups but most are.
Always make a backup before making any changes inside recovery (even if it is an update you are performing). You never know what will cause your phone to lock up in a boot loop where you can't load the OS.
UBR is 100% correct. If you can take the time, learn how to root without the tools. If you can do that, and use the PC to do push commands, etc. You will be better off. I learned how the OG way with my phone. Since then, I have been using "update.zip" to root (3 other droids), Root Helper (for installing busybox, etc), and for the most part use Nandroid instead of Update.zips for Rom installs. It really helps if you know what is going on behind the scenes first, as opposed to pressing a button and bam you have root, installed busybox, and installed a new rom... Just my opinion of course
