Unhappy Rooting my Droid (droid newbie using mac)

Hey I'm new to game , but I've been reading and viewing alot and i really want to root my phone and try some of the cool roms. Problem is I'm using a Mac and the files that I've downloaded my computer doesn't seem to be able to read them. Anyone else using Mac and if so is there a program i need to run. thanks for any help..

P.S. by the way im running the 2.1 update firmware as well, thanks

If your on 2.1 you are SOL without Windows. To root your Droid you need to flash back to 2.0.1 using a program called RSD Lite which only works on Windows. If you can use boot camp and have a copy of windows then your all set, otherwise there isn't anything you can do.

so i've been seriously debating rooting - and i have mac and win computers so we're good there - and i'm curious... i have to flash it back to 2.0.1 in order to root and use a customer 2.1 rom?

also, just wondering the really cool stuff that i can do with root? like when you jailbroke the iphone it opened up so much. if i root the droid, what else do i get to do?

Read the following links:

Attention First-Time Rom Flashers! - CyanogenMod Forum

http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/63010-how-install-sprecovery-unrooted-2-1-ota.html

The 2nd link is what will allow you to get root on 2.1 without having to flash back to 2.0... The first link is very very handy for first time ROMers...

As for really cool stuff, there are tons... For it is the ability to overclock, the ability to edit the look of my phone to insane levels, and the ability to WiFi tether... There are others that you will discover on your own...

You could always install Windows on your Mac (if it's a newer Intel based processor) and run the RSD Lite program through Bootcamp. That's how I did it

I'm a Mac user, but not an iPhone user
