Default 5 things I want IF I root.. which ROM and extras should I use?

Never rooted a phone, but considering it. I know there are several different ROMs and such you can get and extra what-nots.. Themes are not so much of an interest. Yes, I have perused some of the root threads, but if I had these exact needs in mind I "know" I want, someone might be able to cut through the options and just say.. "you want Bugless Beast with the just released p3droid Froyo baseband and the extras x,y,z and these will get you the items you seek".

I know there are very specific things I would want to root for and here they are. IF I were to root, which extras, scripts, ROM is best for the needs I want to meet?

1. baseband change
2. overclock
3. remove stock apps I hate
4. kill app ads (admob)
5. screenshots

IF I am going to do this, I would want to do it with Froyo 2.2 in mind, so maybe not have to redo it all when 2.2 comes out officially.

1. The baseband update is completely independent of the ROM.
2-5. Every ROM will do these features.

Overclock with any OC kernel + SetCPU, remove ads with AdFree, kill stock apps w/ scripts or terminal commands, screenshots w/ drocap2.

All of the things that you want can be done with any ROM out there... (don't know about the newest baseband that might only work with the 2.2 ROM)... As for the other things all you need is Root and then a couple apps (and a custom Kernel for over clocking)

To remove stock apps you can use Root Explorer from the Market. Or do a Google search for ADB and use that from your computer..
To kill app adds you can use any ROM and then pick up the scripts from JRummy off of Rom Manager (another app that you can get off the Market)
To get screen shots you can get the app DroCap from the Market

Now for Over Clocking you will need to download and install a kernel (these are done just like you would a custom ROM, you just don't wipe anything before installing it). Once you have the kernel then you need to get SetCPU from the Market which will allow you to set up profiles and set your CPU speeds.

Edit: Or Fab could just post and say what I said in far less words :P

thanks guys..

so I have seen a thread on the 2.2 Froyo ROM.. so is that yet a "new" ROM that gets added to the list like Bugless Beast, Simply Stunning, CyanogenMod, NexBeast, Ultimate Droid?

Yep that is the latest, it is a leaked version of the 2.2 release from Google ported over to the Droid... It is running pretty good for me, however it is pretty new and so it might have some stability issues... If I were you I would go with one of the more established ones until you are more comfortable with ROMs...

There are a few 2.2 roms out now. Boostdscoob has one. Pete is currently working on one (Bugless Beast)...I'm sure all of the devs are working on new roms for 2.2 atm...

I had a list just like that (actually shorter) when I rooted on Memorial Day. I got everything on my list accomplished in one day, then spent every day since tinkering with the phone. I'm guessing most people are like us and root for specific reasons. I am also guessing that most of those people go on to be like me and make "root tweaking" a new hobby.

I have not done it just yet

it seems at this stage, it would be a waste to not do it using a 2.2 ROM given that is right around the corner and given if you did not, all the time effort gets tossed out when 2.2 comes, but on one I have seen, it has WiFi issues and needs some sort of hack or script to get that working again and that just may be more than I want to deal with.

almost wonder if it is best if I just hold out until the true OTA update is done and then root with a more legit setup then these "leaked" 2.2 ROMs.

For me at least, getting root was the hardest part. Once I had root, I installed a 2.1 ROM and later the 2.2 ROM. Flashing a new ROM was (almost) trivial compared to the initial rooting, and repetition makes it easier to repeat again in the future.

If by wi-fi, you mean having ability to connect to wifi signals, I think there are updated 2.2 ROMs already out with that included although previously it was just one extra file and a reboot (for one method).

If you mean wi-fi as in tethering, although a future ROM should include this in the phone's settings, for now it is an easy install of a 3rd party app in the Market.

To be honest, I tried convincing a friend to wait until next weekend to root to allow more polished 2.2 ROMs to hit the forums, but it was him that decided to root now and flash to 2.2 later. I think he made a good choice.

I committed.. took a few months, but with that Easy Root app, I finally went for it. Rooted and now working on 1-5

stick with just rooting today, maybe flash a 2.2 ROM tomorrow after I get comfortable and things backed up

Can you create a back up after the root or is that some thing you should do first.

Hi, I used easy root, which I can't seem to find on the market now. The backup was done after the root, and immediately before flashing of a new ROM.
