I peeled mine last night thanks to this thread. I am noticing a slight squeak now when I slide the keyboard, but I discovered that it's being caused by one of the tabs on the Body Glove case. The plastic must have been deadening the sound originally. I guess it's a good thing I'm ditching the Body Glove once my Phantom Skinz get here!
So after going back and forth for days, (seriously) I finally did the deed and removed it. I was amazed at how easily it came off with just a static cling. Makes me think that it was meant to be peeled. I was worried that it would peel/flake over time and gum up the works so...bye bye film! Mine feels a little smoother but by no means loose.
I used to have a job when I was a kid in a factory. I worked all day long peeling this type of protective film of Plexiglas and painted metal parts prior to the product being packaged. I guess now a days they just decide to leave it on there instead of paying a kid to remove it .

Yes, see, they are avoiding child labor law violations! :0)
I think as with all other glossy finishes (and this one is nice and pretty), they want you to have it in pristine condition so they cover it up. Imagine getting a device complete with fingerprints from the packagers!

when that's your job there's no finger prints to leave- all the oil and half the skin is work off your fingers after about 15 minutes- laughing.
Well, I don't have my Droid yet, but I just got back from the Verizon store whose floor model Droid still had the film on. After looking at all the bubbles and creases in the film, and then peeling it off, it's quite obvious that this is meant to come off! I'm now surprised why this was such a big debate!?
I noticed it when I first got the phone, but it looked far too permanent and I thought I'd just leave it on. But now, after reading this thread, I realize that once you get a corner of it up, it comes off way too easily to be meant to be permanent. And you know what, the phone looks a lot sexier without it! Unfortunately, it's just one more surface that my OCD is telling me I'm going to have to polish incessantly to make it free of those evil fingerprints!

Yeah, I actually thought it would be a firmer piece of plastic, but it's just a protective film, which on the model I saw at the store already had a lot of wear n tear on it and was peeling off/bubbling. This means that those who left it on will eventually need to remove it anyway.
So... does anyone have streaks on the plastic where it has been rubbing? No?? Hmmm.... Must not actually touch anything then huh? Take it off!!!
Actually yes, I can take a pic if you'd like me to prove it. I've had my droid for about 3 weeks now and it definitely rubs. I'm very inclined to think this is a friction modifier to make it slide nicely.

I literally just powered on my phone after putting the Phantom Skinz on. Works fantastic. Take your time, do it right and no problems at all. I've come from many Invisible Shields (Zagg) on my other devices and this one is much much much less "squishy". It does not affect your screen or the touch sensibility at all. Very happy so far.

I was definitely cracking up reading this thread. All these posts over a piece of plastic!! How in the world all these people can fill three pages of comments over a piece of film? These must be the most paranoid, OCD bunch of people around!
Then I immediately signed up! I should fit right in here.
For the record as I was tearing up from laughing so hard about the conversation I realized that I could not bring myself to remove the plastic from mine. I guess its the finality of it. I eventually mustered the courage to pull it off (after donning protective goggles and contamination suit of course) and there is absolutely not difference other than the sliding is a bit smoother and it looks considerably nicer.

I love it, "So after going back and forth for days". If this is your biggest concern in your life, that's great. I just removed mine and you know what, I'm still breathing. Great post.
Thanks BB I'll have to check that out. And to un(eight)elievable? Sorry my ocd has left a bad taste in your mouth, but as a college student paying my way I can assure you I have a life outside of these forums, thanks.
And what shall you all do with this information? 3 days out of the box.
As you can see, the plastic is already starting to peel after 3 days of usage. If that's not enough evidence that this thing was meant to be removed, then what is? Silly people!

i guess the post was did not relay my intention because it sound like you were offended. i'm sure you have interests other than your phone, i just find it amusing that this is something to contemplate. oh well, some people are really sensitive and take themselves too serious.

This post is brilliant and the case and point of the whole thread. I have seen it quoted several times now and challenged and taken seriously when it is SOooo obviously sarcasm....
you can hone your skills... with a pair of tweezers... just ribbin' ya

You two (and the motorola.com picture) convinced me. It's off and seems to slide the same, just looks better.
BTW, this is the first day I've used my Droid like a normal phone, part-time web browser and gmail reader and my battery is still at 70% at the end of the day.

I just took the plunge and removed the film. It looks dead sexy. Yes, it does match the pics on the Moto site. I noticed those pics too and was in debate for this past week on weather or not to remove the plastic. The slide feels much smoother now.
Add me to the list of people who are glad they did it.
It opens a little easier, while I haven't tested it in my pocket over a period of time yet I can see how it might open a little bit on accident...but that wouldn't be the end of the world either. I was a little confused by people saying it's a smoother motion without it, because I didn't consider mine to be rough or very resisted (felt pretty natural) to begin with...but it is a nice, smooth motion now.
It does look 1000 times better with out it (make sure you keep it clean though).

Notice on the picture where the plastic is starting to peel away... that's where the tab on the Body Glove scrapes against the back of the screen... started squeaking once I peeled the plastic... so I ditched the Body Glove.
I first noticed this plastic film when air bubbles started to appear under it. I rubbed the air bubbles out and left it in place. After reading this thread, I see now that it's meant to be removed. I removed it. It does click in place a little louder, and it's a little smoother sliding. But it's not a night and day difference.
Repeated opening and closing "with" the film left on the product will slowly spread the mechanism apart and when it finally "is' removed, the phone's slider will then be looser than the factory specification allow for, and will cause discrepencies in the mechanism's ability to function as intended...
j/k... Plausible tho....

WOW this things a slider! I guess now your going to tell me it really makes phone calls! LOL Guess I will be a remover, only time it gets opened anyway is when freinds admire it!
After I read that conversation with Denise C., I scanned the rest of the thread to see if anyone else made your comment, and if not post it yourself. God damn you for beating me to it
You know what the funny thing is? I'm an American-born Indian. I just find stereotypes and any racy things hilarious, even if its things about me or things that I enjoy.

If I knew for sure there was no reason to ever really NEED to slide it open I would glue it shut so it didn't open accidentally. I sure as hell can't type on it. It must be made for people with pencil shaped thumbs.
How can you get the predictive test to work with the keyboard? I can't.

I took the film off the day reading this post, about a week ago or so..
It seemed fine at first.. slid a little easier/smoother...
BUT NOW, it's TOO LOOSE for my taste.. the bottom of the phone easily starts to slide over with little to no pushing, the top holds in place a little better.. If I had to do it all over again, I would leave the film..
Nothing I can't live with, but, for those reading this post and have yet to remove the film, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.. mmmmuwhaaaaaahahaaa..

After 18 months, JUST last week I took the plastic film off the cover of my laptop and NOW you want me to take off more plastic that I didn't even know was there?
What about the plastic labels that tell me my laptop has: radiance imprint finish, webcam, lightscribe, nvidia geo .. .. - what will I do if if they're not there?

I left mine on for now. My Droid is less than a week old, and I'm not "ready" yet..haha. What nerds I tell ya (including me)!
Being a former Palm user - if this was a Palm, and I had removed a protective plastic film, it would've caused a reset loop and this thread would be 500 pages long by now. LOL.
