I finally found a workaround to get Ymail accounts working on the Motorola Droid that I hope will work for others. I was not able to find a thread (maybe I missed something) where someone got this working. This is a little bit of a kludge but it worked for me.
What I found, it was not possible to setup a Ymail account like you setup up a Yahoo account on the Droid. Everytime I tried this, I received some type of error. In order to get to this work, you need a Yahoo mail account. I had an old one - if you don't have one just set one up. I then used the following instructions to setup my yahoo mail account.
Make sure Wifi is off.
go to mail icon
add account
enter email address in email address filed (name@yahoo.com)
enter password at password field
select MANUAL SETUP not next
select imap
username= name@yahoo.com
password = yourpassword
imap server= imap.mail.yahoo.com
port=143
security=none
optional = blank
select next
Then, set the outgoing SMTP server to:
smtp.mail.yahoo.com, port 587, security=none
and finish the setup. Hopefully this will work and you can access you yahoo mail account.
Next, click on the email icon (you just setup), bring up the menu and select account settings. Choose Incoming settings and change the Username to your Ymail account - name@ymail.com and save the settings.
For me, this worked! Hopefully it will work for you.
Let me know if it does.

I discovered this tonight right in my Verizon paperwork. I had planned to post it but found this has been posted here. I'll add that VZW has a different smtp listed in the paperwork. - the recommended is smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com and it too works like a charm. I don't know if there is any difference in function-if it works, it works.

Wow, this worked for my YMAIL!!!! Thank you so much! I have been banging my head against the wall for 2 weeks +++
so i got it to work so that i can access my emails no problem. the issue is that i don't get the notifications when i get a new yahoo email. i've tried 3 different times that it should check for new emails, but the notifications just don't work....actually it worked once in the past week so i really don't get it. is there a way to change that to my default email account or something stupid?
For some reason this doesn't work for me anymore. Stopped on the 29th of Nov. I re-entered and checked numerous times if I followed it correctly (even though it worked previously) to make sure also.
The error happens when setting up the Incoming server settings:
! Setup could not finish
Username or password incorrect.
Don't know what changed. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

Stopped for me too. Worked for 1 day, then nothing....

I just got the same error as well I had my mail set up right last night, and tonight it keeps giving me this error. I wonder if yahoo has put a stop to this to get us to upgrade to a plus account?

thank you so ******* much!!!!!! the people at the verizon store suck ass and they took an hour trying to figure it out and never did! i finally took my phone from them and told them they were lame and left. your great! i have been missing my email for 4 days and it was killing me!! thanks soo much
Looks like all the things that we "think" fix the issue really don't. Lookq like it is a yahoo thing from other threads I have been reading. That is why I am killing my yahoo account and moving them all to Google.
Anyone really think that yahoo will get this problem fixed? I just don't think they will, considering its google based android OS thats having the problem.
i got my droid today, did this and it worked perfectly..
then later i downloaded a "power management" app and when i plugged the phone in to charge it turned on wifi. i believe the wifi being turned on somehow messed it up. i uninstalled the app, turned off wifi, deleted the email address, rebooted and redid it and it worked fine now

YOU ARE RIGHT!!!! I am so excited. I have been waiting for weeks now. Works well, thus far.
Yea and it broke on me again... everytime i turn on Wifi the yahoo mail craps out.
Hmmm...I will keep that in mind. I really dont use WiFi much since I have a great 3G signal, but its good to know. I am just so amped to see my Yahoo mail coming through my Droid. I am still inside the 30day return period and this was a tipping point for me.
I attempted this weeks ago and it worked for a couple days... Now all I can get is a Username/password error.
I've tried it with every single combination of WiFi being on/off, Sync on/off, with/without the "@yahoo.com" suffix to my account name, and every other thing I can think off.
It seems like this is becoming a problem for everyone from every message board I've seen since early December. Who here *STILL* has it working with their default mail app?!
I'm seriously about to abandon yahoo if this issue isn't addressed ASAP.

Hold on. I had been having those same issues, until today. My Yahoo account now works perfectly and has been for about 2-3hours now.
Tips:
- Make sure you enter your FULL xxxxxxx@yahoo.com on the Incoming Settings screen as well as the first screen. Only the xxxxxxxxx portion will show up after you click next on the first manual setup screen.
- I re-entered my password as well on the Incoming Settings screen, as I have it setup for ******** and wanted to make sure it was correct.
Maybe this will help cause I have full access to my yahoo mail as of right now.
My boyfriend uses yahoo mail and has had the same issues. I keep forgetting to try, but are we able to just add an email on there now without this workaround, like with any other regular email? He'd rather now use gmail, but if he MUST he will. Or pay the $20 a year.
UPDATE: My yahoo mail crashed...after nearly 24hrs of use, I am not back at square one with the Username/PW error. I cannot even re-initiate it at this point.
I contacted verizon about not being able to access my yahoo account via IMAP and was told to goto this link DROID ERIS by HTC Email Set Up Instructions I told the person I have a motorola droid not the HTC droid, she said it was the same for both phones.
To access Yahoo! Mail you must be a Yahoo! Mail Plus subscriber.
When you enter a Yahoo! Mail Plus account and your password, it will configure successfully. All other Yahoo! accounts will result in an “Authentication Failed. Please verify your username/password” error message. Visit www.yahoo.com for details on subscribing or upgrading to a Yahoo! Mail Plus account.
As an alternative, you can check Yahoo! mail by visiting www.yahoo.com using the web browser.
I signed up for a yahoo plus account and got pop3 account to work (it doesnt seem to update very often - I have it set to update every 15 minutes but seems like it only updates every 2-3 hours). I tried setting up an IMAP account so that I can also have access to all of my personal folders. I had no luck. I used the settings posted in several of the posts on this site as well as many others and it keeps saying i have an incorrect username/password. (I made sure wi-fi was off - had the correct ports etc)I know the information I entered is correct. I have tried it dozens of times over the past week since I have my phone. I used this information to sign into my yahoo account on my pc and it worked. I contacted yahoo plus's chat line and here is my converation.
Please wait for a Yahoo! agent to respond.
You are now chatting with Phillip
Your Issue ID for this chat is LTK4260752684X
Phillip: Hi! Welcome to our Yahoo! Mail Live Chat service. I'm glad you've
joined us.
Phillip: Thank you for providing us the details of your issue.
Phillip: In my understanding, you are having problems setting up Yahoo! Mail
through IMAP with your Motorola droid. Is this correct?
Me: yes
Me: i have a plus account and am using imap.mail.yahoo.com port 143 for incoming server & smpt.mobile.mail.yahoo.com port 587 for my outgoing server and I keep getting a message saying I have an invalid username/password. I know the information is correct. I logged into my pc with the information I typed in.
Phillip: We're glad to have this opportunity to assist you with this issue. I
will do my best to help you with this.
Phillip: Hold on for two minutes and I will see what I can do.
Me: i have read hundreds of messages on dozens of message boards and appears lots of people are also having issues.
Phillip: I will be right with you, Sir.
Me: no problem
Phillip: Thank you for waiting, Sir.
Phillip: The IMAP settings will be provided by your mobile device's carrier.
Phillip: Please contact them and ask for the IMAP settings.
Me: so yahoo plus doesnt support imap? I originally contacted them before I contacted you and said to access yahoo email, I needed to order yahoo plus. So I did. Verizon directed me to this link DROID ERIS by HTC Email Set Up Instructions and said I need to be a plus user to access my yahoo account. I can access my mail through pop BUT I want to access it through IMAP so that I can also have access to all of my personal folders.
Phillip: We have an IMAP with mobile devices however the settings will be
provided by your carrier.
Me: I will contact them again, but it appears I am getting a run around. I contacted Verizon who tells me to get a yahoo plus which I did and still cant get my mail to work so I contact you and then you tell me to contact them.
Phillip: Would there be anything else I could help you with?
Me: no
From reading hundreds of posts about this issue on multiple sites, it appears that people who got their droid early and set this up were fine BUT within a few weeks of the droids release, things didnt work.
Is this a Verizon issue?
Is this a yahoo issue?
Is this a motorola issue?
I have my pop account set up which is ok for now BUT I am hoping in the very near future that someone can come up with a solution or a work around/fix or yahoo releases an application for the android for people like me that are still unable to get their yahoo imap account set up on their droid. I really dont want to spend the time forwarding hundreds of emails from one account to the other.

Crap... my ymail account was working just fine, and then about half an hour ago, it just stopped. I came here looking for the set up instructions again, and I learn that aparently Yahoo has turned this off for Droid? lame. I like having both Ymail and Gmail...
Hope someone smart finds a workaround for this soon!
funny story.. yahoo stopped working last night .. then some reason started working again this morning lol
Exact same story here. Mine is working correctly right now. We will see how long it lasts this time around. I will keep this thread updated with my findings.
yeah this sucks! this didnt happen on my storm at all!!
stupid driod. so the only real fix is to pay for yahoo plus and forward everything to gmail?
and i right?
No. You can either pay or forward to gmail. But if you forward you never know when it will come. I saw on mine that it hadn't checked for almost an hour so it's not quick, but works.
Well, its not much of an update, but I am still having the same issues. Very very sporadic service. One minute I will get constant emails, and nothing in the next minute.

in order to forward dont i need to pay for yahoo plus?????
i didnt think there was another way to forward from yahoo without paying for it. and paying for yahoo plus isnt gonna get me my email from yahoo to my driod. gmail works and yahoo doesnt. it worked on the blackberry so i am confussed as to who the trouble maker is in this case- driod or yahoo?

Oh you know you may be right. I don't own a yahoo mail account anymore so I can't test it. But if you would like to try it please do and report back for others. Just make a gmail account (if not already) and select Accounts and Import and setup in there. I forwarded from my Live account to gmail before and it said I had to have a paid account, but it still worked.
For those of you experiencing sporadic access to ymail, try turning off WiFi. I think Yahoo is blocking imap access on non mobile IP's. Whenever Im home and I want to check Yahoo, I just turn off WiFi (with the built in widget) and get yahoo.
As an alternative, you could just go to m.yahoo.com and get pretty good mail there too.

This is true, but shouldn't be an issue, that's the point. Those with yahoo shouldn't have to go through hoops to receive their email. If it works for you, great, but this still needs to be addressed by Android immediately.

I agree its an inconvenience, but I'm not sure its an android issue. Not nuch they can do if yahoo is treating traffic from vzw differently. I wish someone would tell us exactly why it doesn't work on wifi, cause I kno it works on the ipod touch.
On a related note, I got an email from yahoo the other day saying I can get my mail on vzw devices by going to their mobile site. Maybe by using imap we won't see their ads and in their eyes they're not making money from us.
I just tried this and the install worked (so far). although, I'm not very confident it will work for long after reading all of the above posts.
I don't even know if i will receive any kind of ring when a new email comes via ymail. we'll see.
It does suck that you cant "add an accout" through the setings>sync thing though. I was very frustrated with this when I first got my Droid back in Nov.
I did come from a WM6 device that synced ymail flawlessly.

Well you should definitely get a notification if the Ymail is being pushed to your phone. I always get the notification when I actually get the mail, but I do not always get the mail.
