Default Google Maps Tip,Tricks, & How To's

I will update this forum whenever a new post is listed.

Added by posphone: When in maps if you press menu, latitude, add friends you can add yourself and others via invite (email) and see where they are 31...and you can message them through Google talk.

Added by pbwhite: you can long press on the home screen, select shortcuts, then directions, and enter the address, type in the shortcut name, and you're done!

Added by RocknSteve: All you do is add the address in the address field for the contact and then you can just type "Home" for the "to" field for directions.

Added by KrazyKarl: To add a shortcut to your home screen do a long press in an open spot on your home screen and when it brings up the menu select shortcuts>directions. Then just fill out the info. When you're done you'll have a shortcut that, when you tap it, automatically starts navigation to that location. no need for any 3rd party apps to do this.

Keep them coming!

Let me know,
Ben

Its kinda fun stalking friends and you can also navigate directly to their location. It makes meeting up with friends real easy.
Of coarse you can turn it off so wifiepoo does not see you hanging out in the bar.

The Google Maps on my Acer Liquid don't seem to have the 'latitude' button on the menu! I tried Markets and cannot find Google Maps. Anyone has the same problem?

Does anyone know how to save your "Home" so you can just hit "go Home" as you would on a automobile GPS unit? How about saving favorite places so you can just look it up and then click on the place and boom the Map navigates you there? I have not figured this out yet or even if it is capable.

You can use Nav Launcher from the market (free) which adds a favorites panel.

Or, you can simply long press on the home screen, select shortcuts, then directions, and enter the address, type in the shortcut name, and you're done!

I would like to know how to hide the "bubble" from Latitude that shows my name, city/state and how long ago it was. I'm fine with the icon but that "bubble" blocks part of the map when I am using it as I drive to monitor traffic patterns so I can take an alternate route if necessary.

Or if there is a way for the map to "follow" me without having the Latitude layer turned on.

i have the same issue. if you turn off lattitude layer you will just be a little arrow instead of the bubble.

This took me a while to figure out myself. The thing I found out is that you can do that IF you have an address for a CONTACT. So, for me, I have a contact for "home" with my home phone number. All I had to do was add the address in the address field for the contact and then you can just type "Home" for the "to" field for directions.

No, it's not as good as being able to just save a pin-point on locations you want but this is the next best thing. And it would make sense for Google to add that feature in the [near?] future.

Thanks for all the help, I really need it! I though have trouble viewing the street view

. When in google maps, click and hold for one second on the map and choose street view. Almost every main street. Absolutly insane.

In Google maps what exactly do I click and hold? Tried a number of things but nada.

You all are doing it the hard way. I just leave bread crumbs everywhere I go so I know how to get home. It's weird though... sometimes I end up following an old lady who's feeding the birds...

There's an app called Here I Am 2 that will send your current location and link to google maps via txt or email.

In latitude, I added my wife and friend who have Droids. But their location never updates, it's always at least a few days old. Is there a way to make them refresh their location? I know this isn't supposed to be like a chaperon app, but I just thought it was pointless if Latitude never accurately showed their location.

Also, I don't see any options anywhere in the Navigation options to re-route around certain roads, tolls, traffic, highways, etc. Am I missing something?

Thanks.

Only issue I have with this app is the contacts screen is kinda wonky. I have several contacts listed multiple times but you can't see the details on them until you click on them to add them to the list of quick-contacts. Otherwise, works very well!
