Red face Help for a newbie?

Hi all,
I'll be the first one to say I'm a complete and utter noob when it comes to hacking anything so in trying to get this to work, I ran into a couple issues:
1) None of the steps performed in roothelper work for me. I have all the files I need in the root, but clicking does nothing ( in RH, as far as I can see).
2) Where exactly do you "put" the usb driver in the Android SDK? In what field? It won't let me copy and paste or drag and drop anything anywhere.
I know these must be really, really dumb questions and I'll definitely have more, but I'm stuck and afraid to permanently damage the phone
What to do?
Thanks guys.

Default Nandroid backup

As mentioned earlier in this thread, I see lots of dots...LOTS of dots. I've been waiting for almost an hour now. I do have about 101 apps on the phone. Should it REALLY take this long to make a backup of my original system .img?

1]if the roothelper didnt work then that means you didnt properly root b/c simply pressing the designated buttons in roothelper works in a matter of seconds
2]you just put the tools in the folder and if it's not letting drag and drop, that means you didnt extract it
3]yes these are dumb q's but trust me, i asked the same shit to others last week so you're not alone

nandroid shouldnt take more than 2 mins to create a backup at most, if anything re-do the flashing busy box and recovery steps again, i updated the droidroothelper to the latest version [v5] so hopefully that helps

hey guys, im new to all this stuff so bare with me please =).

i've completed the How To Root first part, but i am completely lost in the second part Flash Busy Box and Recovery, mainly because after looking for 2 hours online i can't find a working link for step 1 "1. Download http://alldroid.org/download/file.php?id=832 by crotalusfreak and unzip it, now copy the folder named Tools to the root of your sdcard"...

even after clicking the newly posted link by wsbsteven, i can't find the file that needs to be downloaded in order to complete "now copy the folder named Tools to the root of your sdcard" am i completely missing something here?? What exactly is this file named, because i downloaded everything on the page the link sends me to and after extracting the files there was no "Tools" folder.

Please help =\

idky it would take you 2hrs and get nothing out of it, the link says its under alldroid.org so you couldve simply gone there, go under development> motorola> droid/milestone and find it there, there's only 2 pages worth of forums so that couldve taken 2mins at most. i updated the rom and the root helper app so just click the link and follow my guideline and you should be fine

Hi guys,

I'm new to rooting, too. I successfully rooted the phone, I have the "SuperUser" thing in my apps.

HOWEVER,

I'm really afraid that if I don't like 2.1, I will have lost my 2.01.

I am deathly, deathly afraid of bricking my phone.

So, can someone tell me at which step is it that I make a backup copy of my 2.01 phone? And if I don't like 2.1, can I definitely go back, or am I stuck??

I am so afraid!!!

you cant brick your droid b/c if you follow my steps and most devs at alldroid.org [im not a dev] then you'll have a nandroid backup of your 2.01 firmware so if you dont like what you see in 2.1 [highly doubt it] then you can flash your 2.01 back and be back at square 1

When I try flashing the sirPsycho 12.0, it doesn't give me that option.

It says flash 14.0

Does that matter?

ALSO,

when I go to "cmd C:\android\tools"

on the black screen I type "adb shell" and it DOESN'T recognize that as a command.

What now??

I'm not taking shortcuts. I'm getting to the step where I flash recovery and I don't see sirPsycho. I see 14.0

I picked 14.0

Then did the whole debugging thing.

Then went to cmd C:\android\tools

Then a black DOS-type screen came up.

I typed in

adb shell

Nothing happened.

Ok. I think I know what the problem is.

I got to the point where I press RUN then type in

cd C:\android\tools

But nothing happens. It gives me an error.

says "WINDOWS CANNOT FIND "CD""

did you install the android sdk? did you download the usb drivers and put them under the android sdk folder? did you go to Settings -> Applications -> Development -> check USB Debugging on your droid? did you go on your comp's device manager and find motorola a855? did you press Update driver -> Browse for driver -> Let me pick -> Computer -> Have disk -> Browse -> C:\android\tools\usb_driver?

Never mind. I'm an idiot. Sorry. I didn't type

"cmd" in the RUN to get the black screen.

I now have access to adb shell and am rebooting into recovery

SORRY! My mistake.

ok, after flashing the 14.0 and rebooting into recovery, there is no nandroid subfolder

I'm not sure why. I did everything correct up to that point

When I continue into debugging mode and do the command thing for adb shell, I get access to adb shell, then I turn off the phone, reboot into recovery, but no Nandroid Subfolder. . .

There's nothing in the steps about manually creating a nandroid backup. I don't want to screw up.

I mean, it says in the steps to create on by going into recovery mode and then going to the nandroid submenu, but that submenu isn't there!!!

Has anyone actually done this, or are you all just happy to have the chance to do it?

1. Make a NANDROID back up by rebooting your phone into recovery and going to the NANDROID subfolder
2. Take everything inside and make a backup folder on your comp
There is NO NANDROID SUBFOLDER here.

If there does somehow happen to be a subfolder there, how do you "take everything inside and make a backup" from your phone to the pc?

Are you finding the Nandroid Subfolder on your COMPUTER SCREEN, or on the PHONE SCREEN??

Can someone please help? I'm just sitting here holding my you know what until someone can help.

Its a yellow robot with yellow instructions on navigating. Above it is blue writing. on Top it says Android system recovery

Patched by SirPsychoS (0.14.0)

Options are:

reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
mount options
backup/restore

the nandroid submenu is "backup/restore" option.. click it then preform a current backup.. then reboot... the folder on ur SD card should be there.. this is where u will drop other builds.

Wow. I feel like such an idiot. But I was really just terrified of hitting any wrong button and bricking my phone.

Thanks.

Just one more thing.

When I type in "adb shell" in the command prompt, and all it gives me is a "$"

Does that mean I have access to the adb shell?

I did it!

I don't know if I'm an idiot, I may very well be, but I just thought there was a lot of "guessing" in some of these steps. But it could just be me.

When I don't understand exactly what I'm doing, I like to be told what to do as if I'm a child.

But all's well that ends well.

understandable.. well now that you have the first backup and a restore point.. i'd keep the a copy of the signed manual 2.0.1 update zip file (for unrooting) and now that you have ur first restore point you can't really mess it up. I mean you could go and do somethin really really crazy I'd assume to cokmpletely brick your device, but for the most part, you can ALWAYS do a batter pull and then recovery reboot your phone by holding power and x on start up and then either run restore or unroot.

just a headsup for everyone out there, after a few hours of messing around on different droid sites and trial / error, i came to the conclusion running Panda home theme was just adding extreme ammounts of difficulty. after uninstalling, the steps were a breeze. here's another link that helped alot.

if anyones having problems keep posting and i'll help to the best of my ability

Followed the directions and it worked perfectly.

Forgot to back up my contacts but thankfully they were still there after the upgrade to 2.1.

Default backing up text messages?

Can anyone tell me how to back up my text messages? I did the restore process to install 2.1, and lost all of my messages. Not a huge deal, but it'd be nice to keep them the next time I restore.

Also, does anyone know what changed from the version of 2.1 that was linked in this thread on the 24th to the version that's linked now? Has the keyboard light issue been fixed?

Thanks for the reply. I saw the notes in the post at the top of the thread, but there isn't much information for the 12/27 update. You said that you updated the recovery image and the root helper, but I don't see any info on what's changed in the recovery image. Is there another changelog I'm missing?

that's the only one and it states that after the 24th, the only changes to the ROM itself are market issue fixed [now all paid apps appear again] and temporary keyboard backlight solution [open keyboard, press the power button, press again, and unlock]

i was able to mount and finish the first 2 steps of the rooting process... but now I am stuck on the android sdk step. i do not see my droid in device manger with the exclamation point. and i did do the usb debugging. although i do see a android phone on the top of the list and the android composite abd interface shows up.
