Question iDont display embedded images in gmail?

So I get an email with embedded pictures... all of the pictures show up as a box with a "?" in the middle and there is no option to show pictures. WTF?

If an image is attached it will display. If an image is embedded it will not display. If I go to gmail.com on the phone the image again will not display. If I go to gmail.com on my computer the image is there.

Again, wtf? I hope there is some setting that I'm missing here...

Same problem here. I'm also not having any luck setting outgoing mail to an alias address.

I really want to like this phone, but I'm missing a lot of what I could do on my 3Gs. (except I can't make reliable phone calls on the 3Gs)

It must depend on how they are embedded?

Ebay - "show pictures"
Citibank - "show pictures"
Paypal - "show pictures" (sold a storm, checked my balance)

Email sent that a person made in outlook - nada

It seems like the problem lies in who/where the email was created. Some e-mails with embedded images (citibank, paypal) work no problem, but ones that been created in outlook and sent to me have no button for displaying images.

The people who are not having problems are not getting what the issue is here. I have the same problem on my Eris.

The email that has a "show pictures" or "download pictures" options: either the mail was sent as attachments or the pictures are hosted on a server and Gmail gives you these options.

What is being talked about here are embedded images, i.e. those images that are directly inserted in an html message. Messages from Outlook have this capability as well as certain other programs such as Photoshop Elements.

This may be a bug or a security feature. Spammers use embedded images to report back to a server that the address is good. However, if this was the case, why does the full version of Gmail on the PC allow embedded images to be show.

Also the BB email client displays embedded images properly.

Yeah, I think the problem is when people right click and copy an image and then paste it in an email. Outlook will embed the image into the email, but it's not attached and not linked to the original picture via an html img tag.

If it's an html email with proper img tags then those ones seem to work.

I had set up gmail to retrieve my optonline stuff - one stop shopping thought. Email with embedded photos do not display (mostly) in gmail but they show perfectly in optonline via pop server. Obviously I'm not using Outlook either way. Seems like a shortcoming to me.

Regards.... Steve

Can you see these images on your computer's gmail interface? I just sent myself some wallpapers (PNG format) and saw them inline on my Gmail app. I know that even on the laptop, there are some image formats (as attachemnts) that Gmail does not preview due to virus concerns.

The only easy way to see the picture is have them sent as attachments. Gmail will display them automatically without having to open the attachment.

This agrees with what I'm seeing here. Embedded images fail. Attached or linked messages work fine.

The security issue arises when images are linked in the email. Displaying the images causes your email client to retrieve the images from the source - usually the spammer's server - with unique URL that identifies the email address that the spam was sent to. Retrieval of the image verifies the validity of the email address.

ok people need to understand that embedded images is different than html webpages which will show the button "Show Pictures". Embedded images are basically you copying an image and pasting it into the body of the email usually in outlook.

Well first its not a Droid problem for those who keep blaming the phone
it is the way the person sends it to you, (usually as a forward)
It is a gmail thing that has to do with spam and such through google
I had the same issue on my storm and wm phones gmail just doesnt simply see the images when it formats them. sometimes it even happens on a pc when you are looking right in gmail on pc it is looking more at the server then a forward as imap/pop
I do think gmail will get better with time more so as they are getting bigger with their own os really hitting the public more and more

Test results: Composed an email in Outlook w/an inserted picture.

On phone Gmail shows the email and the name of the attached image file, but no image, no option to open it (short/long press, menu options etc., don't offer any way to view the image). There is a frame sized to the image in the email body, with a small blue square in the center, but the image itself doesn't display.

Clearly the image should show, or at least there should be a "show pictures" button to make it appear. Defect/poor user experience.

I also sent the email w/embedded image to my work email address (set up via IMAP on the Droid) and had a different (somewhat better but still somewhat broken) result. In that case:

1. I got a "Show pictures" button
2. Clicking "Show picture" didn't result in the picture appearing
3. At the bottom of the email there was an option to Open or Save the attached picture.
4. I chose Open and was able to view the image in the Gallery image viewer
5. I returned to the email and the image still didn't show.
6. I exited the email and opened it again and now the image displays embedded in the email. The email app now appears to know where the embedded image is on my Droid.

This is something that Google needs to fix...this day and age not displaying embedded email images is a surprisingly lame issue to have to deal with. There should he a "Show pictures" option to allow viewing embedded images from any email source...

You sir, don't get it. If it won't come up on the gmail app on the phone, but does come up on the computer in Gmail, it's not about the way someone sent it. The phone app isn't handling imbedded images correctly.

I love my phone and I'm sure that this will get fixed.

I'm having this same problem with the Android gmail application. It's really frustrating.

Has anyone heard anything from Google acknowledging this is a bug & will be fixed? I love the phone but it's these little things (yes it's a little thing since there ARE workarounds) that drive me crazy.

I'm going through the same problem. I opened an e-mail that was sent to me with a picture embedded and it did not show up in the gmail app, all I saw was the blue box with a ? in it. When I looged into gmail from my phone browser, I saw the image with no problem. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

I found this twice on the google list of bugs.. it doesnt have that many votes though... if yu have ever seen this issue you should go here and mark it with a star.

Issue 2507 - android - Gmail doesn't display images - Project Hosting on Google Code
Issue 1180 - android - Email app does not display inline images - Project Hosting on Google Code

I would also recommend that you post a comment asking them to combine the issues as that will combine the stars and get it listed further up the list

As others stated.
1. pictures attached to the email work fine
2. html links inside the message pointing to pictures on webservers work fine(this is how most of the tiger directs, bed baths and beyonds of the world send their ads)
3. images that are imbeded in the middle of the message dont work.

the last one is an issue for my father, all his pervert buddies foward around emails with embedded pictures, mostly jokes etc but my father would like to view them on teh phone so he can clean his email box out from the phone.

Default FIXED...sort of

If you setup your gmail account within the Email app, NOT the GMAIL app, the pictures that are embedded in the email will show up. I have tested this so far with 5 different emails and all the pictures showed up, after clicking the show pictures button within the app.

I know this isn't a permanent fix, but for those of us who need this, this can be a temporary fix until the 12/11 update.

Hope this helps

Default Another Vote...

Count me as ANOTHER vote for getting this FIXED.

My wife sends her emails with a lot of those funny emoticons.. I happen to like them.. but CAN NOT see them on the Droid...

Certainly this can be fixed..

If you use the Dolphin Browser and if you use Gmail embedded in that , you can see the pictures in line. Kind of a quick and dirty work around.

There is not good workaround yet. But here's a curious thing. If you view the email in the Droid's web browser and preview the image, then, when you view the message in Gmail's app, the message shows the picture. It's the most curious behavior I've ever seen. For some reason, Gmail app just isn't downloading the image to our SD cards. Maybe it's a rights issue.

Exactly. My wife and I received the same email from her dad, and she wanted to compare the picture quality between her iPhone and my Droid, and the pictures didn't even display on my phone. It is really annoying

Exactly. When I get a notification that I have an email, I shouldn't have to go open a completely separate application just to get the full content of that email

Issue 1180 - android - Email app does not display inline images - Project Hosting on Google Code

I would also recommend that you post a comment asking them to combine the issues as that will combine the stars and get it listed further up the list
Everyone PLEASE go click the star on Issue 2507 so that Google will pay attention to it. If we can get enough votes for it, they'll assign it to a programmer to troubleshoot. Technically they're two separate issues; some folks are having this problem in the Gmail app (issue 2507), some having it in the Mail app (issue 1180), and some--including personalt, I assume--are having BOTH.

Notsure

I just added a star to both issues. It's interesting to see how some people dont understand the problem; and, think its normal to press "Show Pictures" or "Show HTML" (for non-gmail accounts) every single time you get an email from anyone.

I am pretty sure the only reason why some images are displayed is because the embedded images point to a SSL'ed URL: ie, https://bofa.com/bofa.logo.jpg. Since almost no email clients embeds pictures using a signed certificate, we will just get emails from with blue boxes with a question mark until you manually press the show pictures button.

I even tried K9; which is supposed to be better than the builtin email app; but, thats just as bad.

I guess the engineers who develop these apps are used to using crummy text based linux email clients.

If anyone knows of an email app for android that actually shows emails correctly by default please let us know!
