I just had the same thing happen to me. I just got the refurbished phone today, and I swapped everything over. After playing on it for awhile the screen wouldn't wake up. I pulled the battery over 20 times, and did the whole process that everyone said above and still nothing. It just randomly started working again once I plugged it into the wall (on like the 10 try). Ughhh...
I charged my Droid yesterday morning and when I went to bed last night it was fine. This morning when I woke up, it would not turn on and reseating the battery didn't work.
I plugged it into the charger thinking that the battery must have drained, and sure enough, once the battery charged back up to 5% life the phone automatically turned on.
There must have been some apps running in the background that caused the battery life to drop so drastically. I have never had this problem before.
I let my battery accidentally drain last night and when i connected to wall charger all it did was reboot again and again and it freaked me out. I installed a different battery and all is fine. Anyone else heard of this happening???
Lucky for me, I had just performed a full online backup (apps and data). My phone is NOT rooted.
So I haven't found in online searching how to do a full online backup of apps and data...is there an easy way to do this? I would love to know, thanks!
Just got the new DROID2 yesterday, no changes, completely stock. After 4 hours of use the screen will not turn on. I tried factory reset, reseating the battery only solves the problem for like 30min and then back to nothing.
1 month after 2.1 update screen would not turn on (fully charged). The logo showed for 5 sec, then go off, then showed the logo again - for eternity. Getting the battery out did not helped.
CR@P Well my Droid seems to have taken a GIANT LEAP. Went to bed last night... Phone was fully charged. Got up this morning and nothing... The phone powered down last night and did not come back up. Did a battery pull... Nothing... pluged it in and I got the "Eye" thingy and it is stuck there!!!
My friend has had a droid since early March of this year. First time he dropped it and had to have it replaced. Then the last two phones have had issues with the screen randomly messing up. First time it was replaced. Second time we are now dealing with. I had looked on this forum and was able to get it working again with no problems. Lately he was on the phone with a friend and it randomly muted and the screen crapped out. I havent been able to get it working since. I tried plugging it up to the wall charger that he normally uses yet that has not worked either. Is this going to continually be a problem with the Android. I figured they would have had the glitches fixed. He's had no other problem than this.

Android is the Operating system, not the phone.
DROID is the phone.
(Just wanted to make that clear - this thread has seen 38K views, so for all folks who come in here wanting to know more about the phone versus the OS....)
And my suspicion here is that after the initial phone he has had nothing but refurbished phones - and there is always the chance that there may not be something 100% correct with those phones.
Since the DROID is not longer manufactured, he may finally get a new phone as a replacement - another user (a few actually) have started saying that they are now receiving DROID 2 as a replacement....
It has been said here in different ways but Moto and Verizon confirmed that their phones (and most smartphones today) will NOT BOOT if they have less than 5% power even if it's plugged in.
Also, supposedly computer-based USB charging is not as efficient as using the wall charger (so they say) and will take longer to get the unit out of deep freeze (+5% charge).
Be patient, plug in and wait. You will see it boot up automatically and be back in business.
As for why these phones are going below 5% - they are power hogs and you need to plug it in overnight or it will likely drain. Cellular antenna signal weakness is the biggest drain and so are WiFi and other net-centric apps.
I was about to order a replacement when my Droid came to life in front of me!!

Good luck.
It happened again last night... Although this time it looks like the battery went below 5%.
I had the same issue a couple of days ago and when I got the phone to come back up it showed the battery was at 70% power.
Hi, I just got my first android OS phone on friday, and though it's not a moto droid, I had this issue occur about 20 minutes ago. I have a brand new kyocera zio running on crickets network. I came home from work, put my phone on the table, ate my steak egg and cheese on a bagel, picked up my phone and it did nothing. I freaked out for a second, tried holding the power down and got nothing. Then I tried removing the cover and taking out the battery and putting it back in. The phone came to life before I even had the cover back on it. I wanted to see if anyone else had this issue and found this thread. Perhaps this is an OS specific issue and not a carrier or hardware issue.
Just happened to me. Was just trying to send a text message and all went blank. Could not get it to come back on. Plugged it into wall and came back on by itself after about 15 minutes!!! Not acceptable!

Sorry to post on your question but it seems like me posting my own isnt an option.
Last night my Droid died and it wont come on now. This happened to me one other time and it took me 4 hours to get it back working. Last time i took the battery out and put it back in.. didnt work. i let the battery sit out for about 30minutes and put it back in and it still didnt turn on. i kept messing with it until the Motorola M screen popped up and finally got it on.. since then ive kept it charged but last nite it died and it wont come on. i tried the same method and nothing works. when i plug in the charger the white light flashes and sometimes stays solid like its charging but it wont come on. Me taking it to the verizon store isnt a option so if anyone has any ideas other than taking it in.. please help.
need help its happend to me too plz tell me how u made it work

Now charging with wall charger, but just freeze. Only showing Motorola logo.
Tried pushing any button you all recommended, but nothing works.
EDIT:
never mind. found the solution on other site.
had to flash it without battery.
the bright side is, i used 2.1 ESE53 sbf file.
Okay, I've gotten some great tips off this forum and thought I'd jump in with this. I recently had this issue. My droid was about 50% charged, had nothing to do with battery strength. I have had multiple instances where the device had no display, and simply reseating the battery has always worked. This time though, I had no luck, and for 3 days tried everything short of a hard reset. I took out the SD card to back it up (using a micro card reader) in prep to do a hard reset. After re-seating the SD card and, putting in the battery, and (just in case) plugging into the wall outlet, the darn thing powered up and booted fine. All the texts and missed calls form the past 3 days pulled in.
So, I'm thinking this has more to do with an un-seated SD card, and the reason re-seating the battery sometimes works is that it shoves the SD card in at the same time. (Yes, I had tried starting it without the SD card in place first, also didn't work). Definitely worth a try before hard-resetting and losing data/apps.
I activated & fully charged my new Droid 2 last night, accidentally left the phone on overnight... no phone this morning, plugged it into the computer, see the white charge bar is solid, after an hour nothing, still black screen. Immediately came here and searched. I've now got the phone charging at the wall outlet and it's at least telling me it's charging. I can see that it's going to be very important to charge this phone at the wall nightly & to manage settings to conserve the battery. I will also try reseating the battery to see if this helps.

Ok... so my droid is dead for the ~5% sleep. The problem is that my wall charger in three counties away. I use my laptop to charge the phone at night. Anyone else have any luck getting the phone to wake up besides the wall charger?
UPDATE: usb charging apparently takes 1000x as long to charge than the wall charger. My droid just came back on. *finally*.
Very disappointed with the battery life and manual keyboard (which I never use anyway) on the Droid, otherwise very happy.

I'm having the same problem. I have the off center symbol, and I know it's working because I memorized where my house speed dial is on one of the pages, and made a call. I have a feeling it's the screen, somehow, even though the symbol is still appearing, or maybe the graphics processor. I'm going to take mine into the Verizon store tomorrow to see what the deal is
i dropped my droid in a bath but pulled it out quickly, it still played and when i went to do my screen code it went black. . .a day later, so yesterday i put everything back in after i let it dry the screen was on the off? then i played with it and it styed on then after bout an half hour it went off. then couple hours later it came baclk on then shut off and now is off. i can get to my music or calls by memory but the the screen wont come on but everything else does???? any suggestions
I can't get the droid2 to hard reset. I have
pressed "x" and power'd on where I get the triangle with the exclamation however I can't get to the menu.
I have pushed the volume up and camera button in a number of combinations and nothing.
Any suggestions???
I have a new "refurbished" droid on the way but I want this one to work. $250 for a refurbished phone is not my idea of good customer service.

Hard Reset
1. Power off phone
2. Use hardware keyboard
3. Press and hold the 'X' key and Power button until you see a screen with an exclamation point inside a triangle
4. Press and hold the Volume Up key then press the Camera button (I had to do this twice) to get menu screen (Linux back-end becomes VERY apparent here)
5. Using the D-pad, select one of the Wipe options (specifically Wipe Data/Factory Reset)
6. Confirm your selection and wait for it to complete
7. Reboot the device
I just got my Droid 2 Global not a month ago. It had a full battery when I went to sleep. I woke up, went to see what time it was, tried to wake the phone up, and it wouldn't turn on. I tried again, same thing. I took the battery out, kept it out for a few minutes, put it back in, and tried again. Nothing. I tried plugging it in. The light on the side lit up, and I waited a few minutes, tried to turn it on. Nothing. I should also note that when I was playing with it, it would go to sleep while I was working. I'd unlock it, try again, and it'd go back to sleep. It would do this about five or six times before it stayed on. This has happened quite a few times since I've had this phone. Any suggestions before I go to Verizon and stick this where the sun doesn't shine? (I've had nothing but trouble for months from these people.)
FACTORY CHARGER, ONE THAT SAYS MOTOROLA. NEEDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok check it. I think i have solved this. The phone is supposed to shut down when the battery is at 5%, (the phone will state 0%) this is its emergency shut off point. I think the sensor app for the battery to shut down at 5% is corrupt in some respect and does not shut the phone down untill a true battery 0%. I SAW IT, when the phone finally dies it does not do a proper shutdown it just blacks out! (you know when you start windows and it tells you that you did not shut down windows correctly. we have created this problem on the phone. but its not windows nor a pc so the fix is different) Now that the problem is pinpointed THE FIX.
1. pull battery, wait at least 30 seconds
2. plug into FACTORY CHARGER IN WALL( with battery out, to clear batt memory state)
3. remove factory charger
4. replace battery and cover(cover holds battery stable)
4. plug into FACTORY CHARGER IN WALL. (like the charger that came with it.)
5. plug into phone (this in most cases will turn the phone on without even pressing power button.)
P.S. I was at my girls house when this happend. she has the same cord that charges my phone but its by lg. I tried all these tricks and it did not work. once the original charger was thrown into the equation everything came back to life.
My opinion on how this works. plugging it in with the battery out resets the battery state. allowing the phone to turn back on and re sync with the battery state.
(feel free to correct me or tell me im not even close lol. but this method works.)

Same problem. Happened to me three times. Two of those times the phone was plugged into my computer to charge all night and would not wake in the morning. The last time, this morning, phone alarm went off and I let it ring (to see how long - about a minute) then a few minutes later it gave out the Droid "alert" sound, which I now think was to tell me that the phone was turning itself off because it had run out of battery. Plugging it into the computer charger, removing the battery, all kinds of key combinations all failed. However, plugging it into the mains charger got it to work and it showed, 1% charge!
It seems that something is running the battery down real fast and hard. My only thought right now is that, unusually, on two occasions, I had the wifi connection turned on.
I have a similar problem. my phone went dead at work. went home and plugged it into the wall charger. the phone turns on because you can hear the sound when you press the volume up button but the screen and menu lights do not come on. the keyboard lights up and so does the charging indicator light. I just recently got this phone refurbished because my other droid was stolen. I never had any problems with my old droid. it worked like a champ and it went through a lot of abuse! i called verizon and they said i would have to buy a new one which is a load of crap. any suggestions?

i have tried pulling the battery multiple times, and hard reset and nothing happened. its still plugged in.
Maybe walk into the Verizon store?
Just because one told you 'no' on the phone doesn't mean you'll get the same answer face to face.
Smile and point out the OBVIOUS factory defect.
Agreed - take it to them and put your foot down - you got this refurbished phone as a replacement and it is dead - and you should get another replacement.
I found out about this just this morning, having got my new droid 2 days ago.... It was fully charged, so I don't think it's a charger issue, for whatever reason it just did it. Stopped working entirely, I had to hold down the off/on/screen button for about a minute to turn it off and then it just came back on.
It's also been overheating a lot, so much so that I cannot even pick up my phone when it does start heating. This is normally when I use apps (such as fring, whatsapp, skype, facebook) while it's charging. I know, it's my fault for using it while it's charging.... But I don't think it's normal to have a keyboard literally burn your finger when you text to say you gotta go because you got a temperature alert on your phone.
Other than these little things, though, my droid's running great and I'm so glad I've got it.
My motorola droid was working completely fine all day yesterday and night, I randomly woke up at 8 because I heard a vibrate sound, I took my phone off of it's charger and realized it was off, it won't turn back on!! I've done the battery pull and the hardware reboot thing nothing is working!! HELP!
Try a battery pull.
If that doesn't work, try a Hard Reset.
Hard Reset
1. Power off phone
2. Use hardware keyboard
3. Press and hold the 'X' key and Power button until you see a screen with an exclamation point inside a triangle

I've been trying this all night, but when I get to the Volume Up\Camera button, nothing happens. It just sits there until I pull the battery.
Is there a certain amount of time you need to hold them down, or am I just doing something wrong?
sooo i was at work today and the thing shut off randomly (it has been doing this alot recently) and normally if i go home and plug it up it works fine but no sir not today. i tried battery pull, plugging it up without a battery even in it, and i tried to use the reset button but i dont think there is a reset button on this POS they call a smart phone...

I know this seems strange, but I've been experiencing this issue with my Droid now for a few months. Typically connecting it to the charger, popping out the battery, etc. resolves it but not lately. So I bought a new battery and sure enough, it happened again last night after I powered off my phone to prevent it from dying.
So, I charged it for awhile and then put my phone, battery and all, in the freezer for 30 minutes or so. Why I did this was because batteries, and electronics for that matter, operate much more efficiently when cold. I've used the same technique for hard drives.
As luck would have it, I then took it out and connected it directly to my charger and lo and behold, it booted up right away. It did power cycle a couple times for whatever reason, but then booted up fine after that. It reported 20% battery life as well at this point.
What a pain, but I hope that this saves some headaches for you.
I'm having a similar problem with my phone - the screen doesn't turn on, but the stranger part is that the touch function still works. I can still unlock my phone after hitting the power button because I've memorized where I need to slide my finger across the screen. So I guess a more accurate assessment is that the screen won't display any images.
Since I've memorized where the unlock bar is, I can still receive phone calls (the sound still works), but I can't call anyone. I know the battery was fully charged - this display problem happened right after I got off the phone with someone while using speaker phone. After they hung up, I couldn't get the display to come back on. The buttons at the bottom of the screen still light up and everything, and vibrate when I touch them.
I've tried taking the battery out several times, and I tried to do the factory reset, but without an image, I can't very well choose the wipe option, unless someone here can give explicit directions on which buttons I should press, and how many times. I've also tried plugging it into the charger, but all that does is light up the buttons for a little while and the charging light on the side. I've also tried taking the battery out, putting it back in, and plugging it into the charger.
Short of taking it to Verizon, I'm out of ideas. If anyone could provide exactly what to do for the factory reset (like what to press on the D-pad to get to the wipe option), I would like to try that again, since I don't think my attempts earlier were successful.
Okay, so my phone died. So I went to plug it in. Like 3 hours ago i tried it at first. It will only go as far as the M circle thing, when i plugged it in. It does that before it charges, therefore it isnt charging. i have taken out the battery, unplugged it, plugged my wall charger into a different outlet. what now? any suggestions?
How long did you leave the battery out? Are you rooted? Can you acquire a different battery to test it with?
Typically, when removing the battery, you should leave it out for at least 10 minutes, so that the internal components have a chance to lose all power and reset themselves.
I got my android today, I turned it on, set it up, played on it for a while, tryd some apps, looked around, change some settings then as I was playing a game the phone just went black.... I can't turn it on or charge it! I was only on it about ten mins. I've sent it back , hopefully it works when I get it back!
I've ran my battery down twice now to the point where it would not turn on again the next time I went to use the phone. Once plugged in it powered right up and charged. It seems like the Droid has a certain threshold where it will consider itself completely dead and not power on until plugged in. I have a hunch this is at lower than 5%. The solution is to charge it before it get's below 10% and then it's not an issue.
my phone just shut off last night after talking on the phone, ive taken the battery out, plugged it in, lightly tapped it against my hand ive done EVERYTHING... i think these droids seriously SUCK
My theory based off of what I read (googling "white light droid on") is that the white light is an indicator for phone charging when phone turned off. Also, while phone is under 5% power it simply won't turn on - and so when it is plugged in and batteries are empty, only the white light comes up and nothing else will work.
Solution is just to plug it direct into a wall charger (car charger ok too), and let it charge for a bit (mine worked after 5 min), then turn it on.
FYI, I am using a bionic, but just experienced the issue. Apparently these droids really consume power (especially with the bionic's LTE) and even when connected to a power source, if it is doing a lot of work (which mine was...), the battery will still be draining (power consumption > power charge).
My question about the whole matter is, is there some sort of app/fix/firmware/etc that will help manage the power better?
btw, currently my phone is set to max power saving and has LTE turned off :/
The DROID does not charge when turned off. Within seconds of plugging in a charger, the phone will attempt to turn on, an if the battery has enough juice, will boot, and if not, it will appear to boot loop.
And I have in front of me a 2 year old original DROID bough on release day - never been replaced. It most certainly did not suck.
