Angry Screen Won't Stay Locked During Calls

When I'm on the phone, my screen constantly becomes unlocked, causing me to hang up on people, putting the phone on speaker phone and even making 911 emergency calls. Why won't the screen stay locked when the phone is against my face and up to my ear?

It's very fustrating and as much as I love my phone I'm contemplating getting a regular old flip phone that can actually make phone calls without so many problems.

My phone doesn't lock - it instead blanks out the screen via the proximity sensor. If your screen does not go blank, I'd get the proximity sensor checked out.
