This is my second droid. The first one had the same problem. Itkeeps randomly rebooting. It was great for weeks.. then "poof" it happened. and it might happen 3 times in one day.. or no trouble for a week....
Recently I noticed that I THINK most (not sure about all, but definitely most) of the reboots this month have come AFTER I used to the gallery app to look at a picture. I don't have any definitive observations, but I'm strongly suspecting a connection. Does anyone else have something to add to this line of thinking?
EDIT - updated info below:
The most likely scenario is that something I can't fathom is causing the gallery app to not play nice when combined with a 3rd party app that is already running in the background. I have listed All the 3rd party apps I have running in the background at bootup (I've had mine reboot immediately after bootup and gallery use)
lets play a game called "whats running" (according to a taskiller application that I DO NOT have running in the background, only when used). I left out the stock apps.
screebl lite
shopsavvy
voice recorder (home screen widget)
weather forcast widgets v2 (widget from the maker of pure calendar)
remember the milk (home screen widget)
vizBattery (home screen widget)
handcent sms [unlikely culprit, had problems before I got this app)
google voice
Maybe if a few other people chime in we can narrow it down to a common culprit....

I would think its more of an external app installed. The Gallery app comes pre-installed and I wouldn't think one of them could cause it.
I have never had that issue....with the 2.0 or 2.1 ggallery apps
My guess is that the gallery app is the trigger to an incompatibility with some other 3rd party app. Alone, neither causes problems, but running at the same time...... BLAM
I have had mine reboot a couple of times while looking at photos with the gallery app, as well.

As of right now, I have none of those running. The only one of those I have installed is shopsavvy. I may have been using it earlier in the day the last time mine rebooted but I'm not sure.

I have shopsavvy running in the background 24/7, even if I dont use it for weeks....
Just did it again this morning. fresh boot of the phone, nothing running, show my sister a picture in the gallery and then put the phone back in my pocket. Few minutes later I hear it reboot......
i have google voice and shop savvy (and other) with no reboots what so ever. i had Handcent but it was a little slow to start up for me so i took it off.
one of the Widgets would be suspect in my book.
Just as soon as I uninstalled it, the gallery reboots stopped. I put it back on, rebooting started again. Simple process to create the fail: open the gallery, open the camera pictures folder, select an image, wait for it to load then turn off the phone (with the image up). will reboot within 15 seconds. If not, try again, ALWAYS worked on second try.
Interesting to note: turning OFF screebl and checking the running processes to confirm that it was indeed stopped DID NOT fix the problem, ONLY uninstalling it caused the reboots to stop...
EDIT: looks like I was wrong

NOW: anyone care to test it out on their droid and see if they can reproduce my results, or is it a specific combination of the other apps on my phone too?

Well, there must be another one that doesn't play nice with the gallery, too, because I don't have screeble installed on mine. Glad you figured yours out, though!
So.... it wasnt screebl lite. The phone does not consistently do it anymore... but it still does it. I guess it's going to be a hard reset to cure it..........
I have this exact problem on my moto droid. I don't have many of the apps listed that you described earlier except for google voice. This is very reproduceable for me. Every time I open the gallery and then either press the lock button or let it lock itself, poof the phone reboots immediatly. It even happens right after a reboot. I've used taskiller to kill all running processes and then it still happens.

I have the same problem i noticed it after the 2.0.1 update every time i go into the Gallery on my Droid and get out ether the phone will freeze then reboot or you click the lock button and it reboots Motorola just says to get it replaced they were no help. Verizon said the re update the phone but Motorola will not send the update again.
I'd get taskiller off there immediately. ON another board, we've documented that it's the source of a lot of trouble...have no idea if that's it, but it's the usual suspect in so many troubles. Worth a try.
I got a Droid the day after they came out.... My original droid would spontaneously re-boot, so I took it back for a replacement.
The first replacement that came to me by FedEx had a loose screen, so I sent it back.
Second replacement comes...It looks/feels good, so I set it up, and load my data to it. IT RE-BOOTS after viewing a picture in the gallery, and then locking the screen with the power button.
I took it to the Verizon store, and the clerk transferred all of my data to ANOTHER replacement phone. THAT phone re-booted after viewing the gallery, and putting the screen to sleep as well.
I was told it had to be a software issue, and would likely be corrected when the new software update comes out.
I went back into my ORIGINAL Droid.... AND NOW IT DOES IT ALSO
My original Droid would reboot occasionally, and completely random.
It NEVER used to do it with the gallery/screen lock, scenario.
yes I have the same thing. I go into gallery and the phone restarts. this is my 2nd droid. I cant remamber when it started on the 1st one. but it may have started sometime after 2.0.1 update.
this is what I have downloaded.

if any of them have problems please let me know. Thank You
I'm having the same problems with the gallery. Every time i open the gallery app and go into sleep mode my phone reboots on its own. I'm currently running the sholes 2.0.3 rom but had the problem well before flashing the rom. I believe this is a software bug from the 2.0.1 update as I never had this issue with 2.0. The techs at the verizon store were clueless and wrote it off as me having downloaded a corrupt picture which is a load of BS...
Swapped microSD cards? When you got your replacement did you keep your original SD card?
they put my old card in the new phone and it still does it. I wonder if they would exchange the 16gb card with a new phone. start all over. or do you think reformatting the card would help.
Device(s): Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Verizon Wireless CDMA/LTE Version

Gawd, this one has been making me lurk and then finally sign in again.
Removal of an app is not always the key here. For example, if an app overwrites something on your stock rom, it may not REMOVE 100%.... IE leave some damage behind; it could be install or it could be a certain method or use of an application.
The only way to tell with 100% certainty is to wipe your phone and do those apps 1 by 1. It's a hard process, but if you can identify the problem you can:
1. Report in Marketplace
2. Start a thread about it so others can try to recreate the problem.
Honestly, 2 phones and the same problem with the same apps points to deep problem. I'm on my holy grail version and have never had a problem. It just keeps on ticking and ticking. But I only have certain mainstream apps installed. If you have the time, restore and do those apps 1 by 1 and test them.

I fired up my replacement phone with NO apps... and it did the same thing.
I may try a new SD card, as someone else suggested.
I have been noticing this problem for almos a week now on my Droid. It started when I installed Bugless Beast. I noticed the battery life at idle became 3 hours or less. Alot of troubleshooting, reinstalling, factory resetting, cache wiping later, still had the problem.
Finally I downloaded OS Monitor and found out that a process called "camera" was using 70 - 95 percent of the cpu's capacity! I killed the process, and the battery cooled down (from 41 degrees+ to about 30) and the cpu was at 7 percent capacity idle, and things were normal.
Until I noticed the battery heat up and the charge almost dead later that night! Sure enough "Camera" was back. Killed again, rebooted phone but it's there from the start.
I didn't realize until now that it would happen after trying to view a picture or use the camera. It seems each time I go to Gallery or try to use the camera is when that process runs that drains the cpu like that. But neither the Gallery nor the camera work! They hang and say "loading" forever, with kind of a blurry background that never changes, as if the camera tried to turn on for a second... which doesn't make much sense when just opening a picture file with the Gallery...
So I'm pretty much stuck here. I can continue killing the process when it pops up but I cant view pictures or use the camera! Fortunately i have nswPlayer to view pictures and video in the meantime
I'm not meaning to hijack this thread, because I think most of the problems in this thread have been with nonrooted phones, if this started right after rooting you probably should post over in the root forums. Which version of BB did you install, did you nandroid backup before you installed BB? if all esle fails use the Nandroid method to install BB.

Well yes I rooted, following the maticulous steps posted in this forum, backing up and what-not. I don't necissarilly want to revert. I suspect the camera app or gallery app are broken, and am currently investigating a method of reinstalling just those portions. I'll reformat my sd card while I'm at it. Even though the videos and music from it works
I took my old 8GB card out of my LG VOYAGER wiped it clean. by putting it in my computer and deleteing everything off it. put it in the droid and walla it worked. no more rebooting. had to reinstall PIC's, Movies, music, and ROM's for the Nesoid, SNesoid, and Gensoid to the 8GB card. I will not be pluging the droid in to the computer any more. I think thats what started it. will take the card out if I need somthing downloaded on to it. now I will need to try this with the 16GB card it came with. hope this helps someone

Ironically I just finished doing exactly that. Although my phone went back to normal and the "camera" process was present but not taxing the cpu, as soon as I loaded my music and videos the d@mn thing started up again.
So, I can *reasonably* deduce that the camera app is reacting poorly to the media on my sd card... though tests so far testing indicates unmounting the card after the fact does not allieviate the issue.
Another interesting fact is the watch log for "camera" process includes a lot of entries with "com.android.provider.DRM.DrmProvider" and similar misc entries with "drm" in them.
My next course of action will be to replace the default camera and gallery apps. If you don't hear from me it means I've thrown my phone thru a wall and moved to a cabin in the woods

Solution for me: (my phone is NOT rooted)
The problem I had was when I open Gallery it would work fine, I could look at any picture I wanted but when I went back to home screen I could do whatever I wanted just fine. It was only when the phone went into "sleep mode" or whatever you call it is when I would get the problem. When I would hit the unlock button it would go to the boot up screen and start up.
My easy solution without uninstalling any apps was to reformat the SD Card using the phone **WARNING* This will erase all the data saved on the SD card.
I copied all the important things from my SD Card (pictures, music, downloaded PDF's) onto my computer
Setting/SD card & phone storage/ Unmount SD Card - then Format SD card
After doing that the gallery app works fine and doesn't restart after the screen goes to sleep mode.
I then connected it to my computer and copied all the photos from my computer back onto the droid and it still works fine. I have yet to add all my old music and saved documents.
I also have experienced reboots every time I would go into the Gallery. Today I was determined to find the problem and I believe I have.
I have iLightr installed on my Droid (iLightr - Home). What solved my problem was to delete the /sdcard/ilightr directory. This is where the iLightr Intro Video is located.
1) Open iLightr app
2) Menu->Settings
3) Uncheck "Intro Video" (first option at the top of the list)
4) Back out of iLightr app
5) Delete the /sdcard/ilightr directory
6) Re-boot your handset
7) Test and see if the Gallery reboot problem occurs.
Apparently the iLightr intro movie file (title.mp4) was causing the problem on my end. I hope this helps anyone that has the iLightr app installed.
Hey guys long time lurker in need of help. I have restarts when I goto gallery
First off I love the droid my first one was AMAZING, till the touch screen magically died and now I am having issuesto the point where I don't like it verry much..
I am using stock 16 gig sd freshly formatted by the phone. starting from factory refurb 2.1 I rollback, root, and get DM ROM installed nearly without a hitch (It did do one extra restart while @ the motorola screen directly after flashing the rom, after that no problems) so I open the gallery with an empty sd and its all good messed with it a bit to try to cause crash, and nothing... same with the rest the ui... I put a beutifully coded mp4 copy of avatar (confirmed working on first phone /w droidmod as well as the wifes stock 2.1 droid) and go into the gallery and Bam! Freeze then power off.
Going to try some more but this is not an easy one. Anyone having simular happenings?
What's the common denominator droidmod? Refurb?(<seems to be one of them) MP4? (< this is also mentioned in the Ilighter scenario, maybe I should also mention that the file extension on my "MP4" is M4V)
i also get a crashrestart when trying to overclock with set cpu the problems are probly related. I'm pointing to the custom kernal but that is a little over my head. Is the cpu stepping up during playback causing it to crashrestart? I know its asking a lot but can some one who is unrooted try rooting and install droidmod and setcpu and see if it also causes crashes when trying to overclock to say 800 or 1000.(don't check apply on boot as it will looprestart if u do)
I'm gonna try to search more but this is really frustrating have reflashed many times and still the same issue HELP!
