Default notification questions

Noob here with a quick question. I have a verizion droid that I flashed over to cricket and I still get notifications from verizion to update the phone which I can't do because it screws everything up. Anyone know how to turn these off or other suggestions? Thanks

It would help to know what version your are on right now. Go to settings-> about phone and check at the bottom.

In order to turn it off you would have to do one of two things be rooted and edit your build.prop file so that it blocked updates.

Second and probably better would be to get the update and force it from your sdcard.

Check out the below link and you should be able to get the official update from Pete. And then putnit in the root of your ad card and flash it from recovery (if you do not know how to do this please ask and we can post hownto do it or direct you to the thread with instructions.

One additional thing. When you go to pete's site click on downloads and scroll down to OTA updates, but you need to known what version your on so you know what update to download first.

The version I'm running is 2.2.1 I've been browsing previous posts but to tell you the truth I'm very overwelmed and don't even know where to start. This is my first Droid. I though since I took it to a "business" to get it flashed everything would be done correctly....Thanks

The business probably didn't have the newest version and 2.2.1 is relatively new. What you need to do is go to the website I listed and download the OTA called "FRG83G from FRG83D". This will give you the most up to date version 2.2.2 which includes the patch for the SMS/mms bug fix.

Since it is the stock OTA it will work on your phone no problem (as long as you are not rooted which it doesn't sound like you are). Also you would know if your rooted since you have to do it yourself.

Once you have it downloaded transfer it to your sdcard via the computer and put it in the root of your card (that is where you cannot go up anymore in the directories). From there enter the stock recovery mode on your phone and flash the update.

After updating to 2.2.2 you will stop getting update notifications.

Does Flash and rooted mean the same thing? It was a verizon phone and was "flashed" to use cricket service

The below thread has the step by step details of how to force an OTA update. Follow it, but DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE LINKED FILE IN THAT THREAD use the file from the above site.

The thread is an older version than what you have now. The procedure for flashing the file is the same however.

Read through it and please ask any questions you may have. I have to go for now but someone will answer it for you tonight or I will tomorrow. Take care.

Negative.

To Flash something (borrowing from computer technology for the last 20 or so years) is to erase and re-program some sort of embedded technology with new programming. More simply, it's the equivalent of formatting and reinstalling your (possibly newer or upgraded) operating system.

Being rooted is primarily a Linux term - it means to be able to have root privileges, which is a very similar concept to having administrator rights in Windows. Without root, there are certain parts of the Android OS that you simply cannot make any modifications to at all.

Alright, I download the update from the site but am lost on what to do now. Never even hooked the phone up to the computer. Is there a way I can save everything as it is now in case I screw something up? Thanks
