My usb port continuously connects and disconnects when it's connected, and/or it crashes the droid/ Prevents pretty much all USB use and crashes droid.

This problem is on a stock droid, and, had existed for awhile. I then, thinking that it may be a software issue, loaded a custom rom, after wiping data and cache. The problem exists in the exact same way pretty much on the custom rom, which changed the OS and kernel, after a bare install. So I don't think it's possibly a software issue anymore.

I was able to do the above because the USB worked very rarely, and I was able to catch it during one of these times.

I also tried this on three different computers, one xp32, another 7x64, and osx, with pretty much the same result, (although 7x64 very quickly reported an error with the device, whereas xp32 kept reconnecting and disconnecting).

The only thing I haven't tried is using a different cable and cleaning the port. But I've had devices do this in the past and usually something is wrong with the USB and it is dying. =(.

I don't think the phone is under warranty any longer.

some updates

based off of info from searching these forums and the other forums, i've done the following,

1. removed the sd card
2. made sure no apps were using the SD card using the manage applications menu
3. updated the drivers on the computer end
4. enabled USB debugging
5. disabled USB debugging

unfortunately none of these seemed to have an effect. Basically, for anything other than charging, when the USB is being used by a computer the phone reboots.

I cleaned the port with some isopropyl and a brush, to no effect.

From a computer repair specialist: when you're having connectivity issues, always, always *ALWAYS* check your cable first and foremost. Those get (mis/ab)used a lot, nd easily break down. The ones that came with my phone are a joke, and I promptly bought some of these from monoprice to 1) replace the stock cables, and 2) have spares hidden away for emergencies.

I bought a few of them, and even with shipping my total order for 3 cables was just over $5. The cables are much better quality, the retaining hooks work much better, the cable is sturdier, thicker, almost double the diameter of the stock cable I got with my Droid. And, I recently posted that using the monoprice cable I actually get better charge times when plugged into the 850 mA wall charger than the stock cable (YMMV, this was a very unscientific test on my part).

They have other, cheaper cables there as well, but when you're literally talking about a few pennies difference - go with the better cables.

nice, thanks for the detail, sorry for the delayed reply. I agree 100%, I need to get a new cable. The other thing I have left to try, is that I realized that I may not have wiped everything to a clean slate when I installed a new rom. So if the cable doesn't work then I am to try that, thanks again. Will update.
