Default droid 1 (A855) screen problem i've never heard of

OK i've searched google a good bit and i have not found anyone with this problem, let alone a fix...

i have an original droid 1. i use the qwerty a lot so i'm always in landscape mode. imagine if you could divide the screen into about 5 horizontally stacked sections. well a couple days ago, just randomly out of the blue, approximately the middle 5th section of the screen stopped responding to touch. at first i didn't know what was going on, but i verified this with an app which shows a circle under your finger whenever you touch the screen. all the way from left to right, anything in the middle 5th of the screen just doesn't register. some "swipe" functions still work, skipping right over the area in a perpendicular direction, but if i need to click on something inside that area, it simply doesn't do anything, or it clicks the nearest button to the bottom or top of that area... really annoying! so is this a software problem or hardware problem? i've had "ghosts" before but nothing like that lately. i have launcher pro and a lot of other market apps. i use the factory wall charger. phone isn't rooted.

any help? , thanks!
