Default Flashing/Rooting questions

Ok guys, I have a Verizon Motorola Droid running 2.2.1 with a flash to Cricket. I have 2 questions:
1) If I root my phone, will it break my flash?
2) Can someone tell me/link me a good tutorial for flashing the motorola droid to Cricket, that way I wont have to spend $60 next time to have it done :/
