Question wierd backlight issue

I have an original Droid. While booting up the backlight is bright but right before it enters the OS, right when the buttons light up and you feel the vibrator bump, the backlight dims. You can slightly adjust it in the display settings but it is too dim to use. I've tried 2 stock roms and a custom one with the same result. The backlight is very bright when booting and in recovery. Anyone run across this before?

You have turned off the auto brightness, right?

Yes, The slider actually makes it brighter but not nearly enough.

When you say 2 stock ROMs, which two?

Also, are you attempting to use this in sunlight?

When I got it yesterday it was running an older stock rom. There was a system update which I assume replaced it with a newer rom. There were several reset/wipes along the way. It is currently running Steel Droid.

Nope, just in my office with the lights out.

BTW. I have no history on this phone. It was bought as a low end test device for app development.

I wonder if it is steel droid causing the issue?

That definitely is pretty dim....

no it is used. I loaded CM7 and it still does it. Must be hardware. I have no idea what though.

Try loading an SBF that is pure stock - that will replace all files, including possible scripts that the previous user might have had on there that made the screen dimmer than it is supposed to be....

Although loading a ROM should have taken care of anything like this, you never know....
