Default Computer does not recognise USB connected phone

Hello, I am new to the forums and I have a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S2. I would really appreciate it if somebody could help me!

For some reason, when I connect my phone by USB my Windows 7 computer doesn't recognise it. My phone makes a beep, but my computer stays completely silent and nothing pops up or appears in My Computer.

I have tried the solutions I've found in previous threads and nothing has worked. I tried enabling USB debugging and then plugging the cable in, but my phone just beeped and nothing appeared in the status bar giving me the further option to 'connect USB storage'.

I've also tried using USB mass storage. I press 'connect storage to PC' and then plug in my phone. The phone just beeps and goes back to the USB mass storage menu with the option to 'connect storage to PC'. Clicking that button again just says it won't work because the USB is connected and tells me to remove the cable.

I can connect my phone through Samsung Kies over wifi, but that program isn't very helpful and I want to be able to transfer music to my phone and edit the artist and song names that appear in the music app.

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong!
