Read this post and the linked one. This is really simple. It has a few steps, most are very simple and then you just click on a button and you are done. Be sure and read all of the steps first, that way you just might be successful on the first try.
I didn't write this, or develop it. I had nothing to do with it, like said I'm an idiot. I don't understand many of the terms, language, etc used to do these things. So I needed it really simple. This worked for me.
You have to follow the directions exactly, in the described steps. There are some pitfalls, I'll explain em. You need
.Net Framework3.0 I have no idea what this does (see above) There is a link in the post, I downloaded it and installed it.
Motorola USB drivers, there is a link in the post. Download and install them.
Download RootMyX2.zip to your desktop and extract the files. Link in the post.
Allow USB debugging on your Droid. settings/applications/development and add a check. Do this before you connect your Droid to your PC (pitfall 1).
Connect to PC, use drop down bar to select charge only (pitfall 2).
Open Windows Media Player and check SYNC (pitfall 3)
Now in the folder where the extracted files right click on RootMyX2.exe and choose Run As Administrator (pitfall4). This is apparently a Win 7 command. I don't know cause I use a MAC. But if you are running XP, just click on the .EXE file.
This will open a GUI on your PC desktop, click ROOT it might take a few min, but it worked for me. I point out the pitfalls, because I tried this several times before I got the right combination of sequences to make it work.
ETA...You MAY need to try this in more than one of the different USB modes before it works. Before you hit the GUI button that says root, pull down the drop down menu bar on your Droid, select "Charge Only" in the USB modes. Try this one first. It worked for me and others have reported that this is the mode that worked for them. Might as well try it first!
Much thanks to the guys who wrote this stuff. I have a post graduate education, but not in programming. You made it easy!
It is really easy actually. I didn't root with 2.1 till universal androot. This is really as easy as that, just need to download a couple of things and follow the step by step instructions. I'd do it for free, but I'm in ND.
It was on the Win 7 machine I used. I really don't know cause I normally use a MAC. If right clicking does not reveal run as an administrator, I'd just go on and click as usual. If it's like all the other steps if it's wrong it just won't work.
Is "Run as Administrator" a Vista or Windows 7 function? I'm on XP and don't get this option when I right click RootMyX2.exe. Should I proceed??
I feel your pain. I'm on Windows 7, and when I rooted I was watching a youtube video guide, and in the video he says, "just right click on this folder and then this pops up, then click the...". Well I right clicked on the folder and what popped up on my screen looked nothing like what popped up on his screen.
It's stuff like that that drives me absolutely crazy. I wish computers were easier to work with. But when you aren't skilled in computers they can make your blood boil. I wonder just how many people have genuinely jumped off of a city building due to issues concerning computers?
I know there were plenty of times at my old job where I thanked God at the end of the day that the building was only two stories tall. Any more than that might have been all the incentive I needed to relieve the stress they put me through!
I ran the program and started doing something else when the "Executing am5.bin...This could take up to 5 minutes." note came up. When I finished what I was doing, I looked for the GUI, but it was gone. Nothing told me it was complete or that it was successful. I rebooted the phone and nothing seems different. How do I know if I'm rooted or not?
Look for a superuser icon in your app drawer or try to use an app that requires root. The GUI never disappeared on it's own when I did it. It would stay with a note that you are rooted, to look for the superuser icon. If it didn't work do it again, it wont hurt anything. Are you sure you did all of the steps in the correct order?
No Superuser icon in app drawer. Yes, I did all the steps in the correct order. The only differences of note are that I have more than one .NET frameworks installed, however, 3.0 is one of them, and I don't see "Run as Administrator" when I right click on the root file. Guess I'll try it again later today or tomorrow when I have the time.
Ok, ran it a second time and now have root! It was a piece of cake, but nerve racking at the same time.
Nerve racking until you discover you aren't screwing up your phone when it doesn't work, just not getting root. It took me about a half dozen tries with the various combinations to get it done.
This was just as easy as EASYROOT....i mean once you install the motorola drivers all you do is click on the .exe file and then just click rootme...LOL...I am a complete DODO when it comes to this stuff but even i rooted my own phone. I would say anyone that got an DX or D2 this is the best possible and yet the simplest way out there to root your phone (for now). Also i disabled all my blotware using Titanium Backup (worth 6 bucks) but there are cheaper ways out there as well like Root Explorer.... (can't stop cheesing)

Try holding the shift button down when you right click on the RootmyX2.exe file you should see the "run as administrator"

HA ha
Yeah, I used the universal androot to get root for 2.1. I tried some of the other routes for 2.2, but like the title says I'm a real idiot when it comes to this stuff. I can follow directions, but some of the root methods use words and phrases that might as well be some foreign language, I just don't understand what they mean. I tried the one click method on the Droid it's self, but couldn't find the file I needed to do it after I unzipped it on my phone. I came across this over the weekend, and it seemed pretty straight forward. Down load a couple things, click on the .exe file and magic happens somewhere. It worked for me, and I sorta figured if I was having trouble someone else might be too. Glad it worked for someone else.
Are you rooted? Using "wireless tether" app? What's the error message? I'm posting via wireless tether, rooted with this app right now.
Yes, I'm rooted using the method in this thread. Yes, I'm using wireless tether. I had to run the root process two more times trying different usb connection options. Now it's working fine.

I think I had to run this in usb "charge only" mode. I do know I also had to diddle with the usb settings to get it to work.

Easy as pie. 2nd Android phone, 1st time I've rooted. I thought I had the correct USB drivers, but it didn't work until I loaded the Motorola ones listed. Thanks again.

No that's not what I did. I did try that first, got nothing.
Disclaimer: This might have everything to do with new update or just crazyness surrounding my house.
I tried the steps outlined above as written, even opening media player etc etc.
I Got no connection to the phone other than charging it. Which honestly I would expect having used the pull down to show "charge only" on usb connection.
This also cause my Win XP computer to go haywire over the drivers and not finding the correct ADB driver and lots of phail.
To that end I noticed in the drop down there were options I don't remember being there 2 weeks ago when I looked. One being "sync to Media Player" once I chose that XP showed new device connected, tried to open Windows medial player and etc. I stopped all that, and went back to "do nothing when connected"
BTW there are 3 other options on the USB connection, charge only, sync with WMP, and I swear I saw sync with iTunes. I have to connect it again and see.
Anyway, I chose the sync with WMP option in the phones notification bar pull down for the USB connection.
Having connected the phone up before and setting it so "do nothing with connected" option in XP. I had a blank screen.
Then I ran the Rooting file as mentioned in first post. Hit "root me" and bickety bam, 5 minutes or so later. Superuser permissions ninja in the applications listing.
Meanwhile I have been running root explorer to rename applications and have ditched some of the bloat. After setting up a secure recover console image (thank to Koush for that nifty little app), and I will actually delete those files and move from there.
I have the superuser Icon in the app drawer. But now, what do I do? Is the phone rooted and what perks does it give me? I click on the superuser app and it comes up blank! Help!

You are allowed Root access to the phone. Think like ROOT directory. You can get into system files and change names, delete files, edit and replace. You know have much more control over your phone.
There are applications that use this to give you more features, IE the program needs this permission inorder to do more.
Look up applications on appbrain (or market) that require "root". LIke root explorer for example.

I had that problem every since I got 2.2
I found when I connect the phone, and grab the pulldown and touch the USB Connection notification. There are some options and right now I don't remember them all. Charge only, and Sync with WMP are 2 of them. Depending on what you choose will make your computer find a different hardware profile. My computer tried to load drivers for each one. I ended up using the 4.7 (I think) moto connect file from the Motorola website. This brings up everything as far as I know.
EDIT: Hope I'm being clear. I should prolly take some screen shots but I don't have dropcap loaded.
Everytime I choose a different option in the pull down, WinXP load a different device driver (although they appear the same to me) the computer doesn't show the device connected until it searches. After winXP sees the different profiles once, it doesn't ask again. though.
This was my problem using the root method. I DIDNOT open Windows Media Player. Its not necessary at all, at least for me. IT was an option in the Pull down notification bar on the PHONE. And once selected, my computer was happy to talk to the DX.
This all started for me, after I loaded OTA 2.2 on the phone.

thanks a lot!
this is bringing me one step closer! i guess i should just be more patient and let the app do its thing. it takes a lot longer than 5 minutes.
does usb debugging need to be "active" while this is running?

That is in the OP and yes it does.
Incidentally until I figured out the usb connection options this, the ROOT EXE never found my phone. So it wasn't a matter of minutes it never showed progress.
You will know quickly if there is a connection you will get the start of a progress bar. Then it takes like 5 minutes or less.
EDIT: Checked the phone. Options on Usb connection are:
PC mode
Windows Media Sync
Usb mass storage
Charge only
for me, charge only allows no driver interface. PC mode and windows media sync don't seem any different.

The Following User Says Thank You to Napalm For This Useful Post:
I'm glad people are finding this post useful. I'm pretty much a dolt when it comes to these phones. I'm not a techie by any streach of the imagination. I ws looking for a way to root my phone and found this. It took a few trial and errors for me to make it work. I tried to explain those in the OP. I know nothing about these phones and the OS, but I cn follow directions and figured someone else might benefit too.
What really slays me tho is the number of posts that say " I rooted my phone now what?" If you have no reason to screw with your phone, don't do it!! If you want to tether, increase the speed, install a custom theme or ROM, then get at it. But don't just do it to say you roote your phone, ya might screw something up. Now days you can probably safely put it back the way it was tho.
This is a great thread, thanks everyone. I was able to root my G1 back in the day, but haven't rooted my new X yet. I'm going to do it tonight. I have a couple of questions.
1) I have a newer version of the .NET framework, will that be a problem?
2) Am I missing a post showing how to restore the phone if I happen to screw something up?
If you do this and do it wrong you won't screw up your phone, you just won't root it/ But if something happens and you need to restore your phone look for the 2.2 SBF threads. The thread is here Droid X 2.2 Full SBF leaked - Download now
You are joking right? 25 steps is easier than the above method? This is easier than the method I posted? I don't think so by any streach of anyone's imagination. No computer game I ever installed needed this kind of entry at a command prompt, not even in the days of DOS. Lots of these people aren't programmers. Hell some of em just figured out how to power on their phones and send text messages. Think they can find a command prompt?
I'm sure easier methods will be along soon, this doesn't seem like one tho.
Setup:
- Install adb/Android SDK and Motorola drivers for windows(32-bit or 64-bit)
- Download this file: Droid2Root.rar
- Extract to a directory, I used c:\Droid2Root
- Make sure you have USB degugging enabled
- Change connection to PC Mode
Process:
1. Open command prompt
2. cd c:\wherever-your-sdk-tools-folder-is
3. adb devices (to verify the connection)
4. cd c:\Droid2Root
5. adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
6. adb push su /sdcard/su
7. adb push busybox /sdcard/busybox
8. adb push rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
9. adb shell
10. cd data/local/tmp
11. chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
12. ./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
13. let the process run until it returns you to c:\Droid2Root (be patient, it may take a bit)
14. cd c:\wherever-your-sdk-tools-folder-is
15. adb devices (to verify the connection)
16. adb shell (you should now have a # prompt)
17. mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
18. cp /sdcard/Superuser.apk /system/app/Superuser.apk
19. cp /sdcard/su /system/bin/su
20. cp /sdcard/busybox /system/bin/busybox
21. chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
22. chmod 4755 /system/bin/busybox
23. mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
24. exit
25. exit

Honestly the method in the OP is really only 3 steps. biggest hassle I had, was nothing to do with the root and everything to do with the drivers and phone settings.
That's why I posted what I did on Tuesday. with 2.2 OTA installed, what you choose on the phone makes a big difference on the driver front and what your computer sees as the "phone". once over that hurdle, is plug, run, grab a beer, check phone, see ninja edit, grin.
I'm due to recieve a LNIB DroidX totally stock running 2.2 OTA today, and I just wanted to check and make sure that this is still a workable root solution. From reading the thread that appears to be the case.
I do have an original Droid that I rooted quite some time ago, so I'm not a complete noob when it comes to doing this.
I do have another question though. Can anyone suggest any reason why it would make any difference if I activate this phone and then root it? Or root and then activate?
The reason I'm asking is because I'm using the old Droid to access the web at the moment, since I'm having some issues with my AIRCARD/WIRELESS BROADBAND access.
Motorola DROID X is an Android powered smartphone with a 1GHz processor, huge 4.3-inch display with 480x854 pixels resolution, 8-megapixel camera with 720p motion video capture and many other features. It's the newest addition to Motorola... Read More
