I wouldn't even bother using your comp to root your phone. Just download z4root from the market and do it that way. I have a macbook and the only thing I use it for is downloading .zip files like ROMS and themes and then clicking and dragging them to my phone for installation. The only time you might need a comp is if you need to flash the sbf to restore your phone to factory settings, and in that case you'll need to borrow a PC to do it anyway.

once i copied the .zip to my computer, i was able to GET THIS TO WORK. Great instructions, and worked exactly as stated.

some very clamy hands while it was going though.

Finally, rooted with a theme (and de-odexed... w/e that means..)

thanks to all.

I don't even do that anymore, I just download them directly to the phone or gmail them to myself. If I'm browsing on a desktop and find a file I want, I Fox to phone it, then download to my sd card...quick and so damn easy.

After sifting through a couple forums I found that the easiest way of eliminating this problem was to download and install the “Titanium Backup” app from the app market and used it to uninstall the stock messaging app that Froyo comes with. This will solve your problem!

Is the stock messaging app in titanium called "messages 2.2 or messaging 2.2"? Thanks in advance!

Lance I had the same issue...after reading another forums i was able to resolve it. Turns out this error is just a warning that it could not find the PID of the exploit to terminate it and continue to run the process. However the problem is that it is waiting for the reset of adb server..
They recommended to try and reboot phone and run the doroot batch again to see if this fixes it. (didn't work for me)
The next recommendation was to unplug the USB cable and plug it back in (this did not work for me)
Another recommendation was once you are stuck at this error then change the USB connection to any other connection(I picked USB Mass storage) and then change it right back to PC mode. (This worked for me)
Just keep trying different things and it should work...little annoying but it does work.
Also, make sure your phone is in debugging mode, but if you got as far as the "can't kill process" then i'm sure your phone is in debugging mode.

Hope that helps....

Ok now that I'm rooted... I have a question...
How do I make a backup of my phone as is right now? I've read something about bootstrap but what does that actually mean? Does that create a backup of my phone and also installs ROMs on my phone? Where do I get the bootstrap application? Sorry for Noob questions...

Search "bootstrap" in the Android Market, download and install Droid X Recovery.
Once installed, go into the application
Allow it superuser rights
Touch "Bootstrap Recovery"
Wait for it to say "success", touch "OK"
Touch "Reboot Recovery"
Let it reboot
Use volume keys to navigate, camera key to select
Go into "backup and restore"
Select backup and create a backup.

That backup will be exactly what your phone is and has right now. No themes or roms...just what you have.
Remember, when you flash that backup, all you will have is what was in that backup (example, any texts or phone calls you've made since will not be there, apps will revert to that point in time and will require updating again).

Thanks for that info... so far everything is running as instructed...
Is it recommended to backup your phone after every ROM/Theme installed?

If I'm running OK, I backup once a week and delete the old one of the same ROM/Theme.
But yes, I'd backup before installing a new ROM or Theme, then if that ROM or Theme is working good after a day or say, I'll back it up too. Keep in mind, Backups eat up a good amount of SD card space if left on the phone and not moved to a PC.

See here for naming conventions to help you remember what each backup consisted of.

The process that doroot is trying to kill is *not* running on your phone. It is the ADB process on your PC. The error message comes from this command in the script:
adb kill-server
What I ended up doing was to use the Window Task Manager to find and kill the ADB server process, and then restarted doroot.bat.

Hey All!

Finally bought my Droid X and it's waiting for me at home. Have had my LG Dare for over 2.5 years and it's time to retire that device. Got the ultimate deal on Letstalk.com because of my company discount and a special $25 off ecode, which resulted in me upgrading for only $55!

In any event, I've done some reading (have more to go), but I have a few questions:

1) Is there a benefit to using this guide (utilizing a PC) vs using the 1-
Click app methods that are out there?

2) Regarding ROMs and Themes - Basically a ROM is a like an O/S, right? So if I don't want Motorola's, I can switch to a new ROM? With themes, this is essentially a "skin" right? Just looking to make sure I understand fully.

Proud N00b here, so thanks for any feedback! Any suggestions for a new DX user in general would be great too...

Thanks for the guide. It was well done. I have used it and installed the 928Droid BGX2.3. Have you heard anything from the developer of 928Droid recently? I have been searching for information on him to see if he was updating the theme. Any information on the theme or developer will be appreciated.

I am working on rooting but I get warning message from my virus scanner. When I download zip file, I got this warning message "Exploit.linux.lotoor.g" and disable downloaded file. Is it virus or just nothing?

Thanks,

Ok...so I am brand new to this but I want to get involved with themes and roms. I have a macbook, but you said i dont need to use it. Can you give me a step by step for "foxing" to my phone and then how to download to my sd card. Once i see it from start to finish step by step I will be fine. Just dont want to try and stumble through it and mess something up. Thanks.

I tried using the Black Glass theme after unrooting, updating to 2.3.340, and re-rooting. The phone hung at the splash screen for much too long. I thought for sure the phone was bricked, but I did a battery pull and the Clockwork recovery mod came up when it restarted. I was able to restore the backup I'd just made. I went through this several times and finally gave up, figuring that this theme is just not compatible with this version!

928 will not work with the new update ,you will have to manually deodex or flash a doedex rom then theme over that

Nice. Well hopefully this guide is updated to reflect that fact and will provide instructions on how to deodex without this rom. I can count at least two people who thought they bricked their phones because there is no mention of this.

here is a guide for manual deodex
[HOW-TO] Manually deodex your phone. - xda-developers
but if you choose to do it through a rom just decide which rom it is you want to use and read the thread and if its not stated just ask ,i personally would reccomend apex which will deodex for you and if you are on .320 or .340 you will want apex 1.3.0

which rom did you add ...apex?and if you want more screens i would suggest getting the gingerbread theme from the ,market or launcher pro ,for some reason with the new adw i cant even see a spot for adding 2 more screens lol and the themes you can put on your rom depend on which rom your running not all work on all roms i would suggest reading the first post of the thread of the rom you want to use since the dev usually updates as the port them or just ask ,and you can rom, theme overclock(which i reccommend jrummys overclock app its amazing)

no you can not flash any theme over it ,currently only revo, nex theme and gingerbread theme will work to my knowledge but to find out just read the devs first post and they will usually keep it updated ,usually most questions you have can be answered by reading that first post and if its not there just ask, also as far as what you look for in a rom is how much blur it has or if it has none or whatever it may be that appeals to you .....everyones different in taste ,me i love apex since it has just enough blur and i can add it as i choose .....it all depends on what you like and you should research and read to find what it is you like

Please clarify your question. If you are trying to root, all you need to do is employ z4Root. Then if you want to play around with themes and roms and other modifications, you'll need to get into the zipped roms. We can help you. Give your questions their own thread as your question is buried in here. Here's z4root: Download z4root 1.3.0 for Android Free - z4root will root your device and enable you to supply system level access to applications that request it. - Softpedia

I actually do have a thread here.
I just want to be able to run the Tether app. All that requires is to run z4root?

after installing the theme, i'm having trouble accessing my dialer, it wont open, i can make calls through my contacts list, but i cant get the dialer open from the apps menu or the homescreen, but otherwise everything works great

btw, I installed 928DroidBlackGlassX-DroidX-DeOdexed-OTA2315-THEME.zip

because 928DroidBlackGlassX-DroidX-OTA2315-DeOdexEERR-THEME.zip would not load up, it would just sit there at the M
