My buddy is telling me that I should "root" my Droid X phone, something ive not heard of before -

1) does this void the manufacturer warranty, or the $6/month im paying for verizon accidental damage warranty

2) is there a way to restore the original settings on the phone, ie make it like the root never happened if i need to? so i dont lose warranty?

Yes it voids the warranty but you can flash the OTA 2.2 and your back to stock and they can't tell. When you send them in (via mail) they don't have the time to go though them even if it was still rooted but don't take it in to the retail store while rooted. It's very easy, especially now. Once you root you can do themes (requires deodex, but there are themes and roms that deodex for you), roms, wireless tether, overclocking and more.

But as most things you would have to take them to court likely for them to honor the law. Modifications have to be the cause of the problem, and rooting does not damage hardware.

I haven't read that, but we don't own the software, we are just licensed to use it. We own the hardware but rooting modifies the software not hardware.

Exactly, if the problem is with the hardware modifying the software has nothing to do with it. The Magnuson Moss act was in place to prevent this type of problem, intial for vehicles but applies to all warrantied products. An example in terms of a vehicle would be putting on an aftermarket muffler and then they claim that you modified the vehicle and that is why your stereo doesn't work anymore.

They have to prove it caused the failure. Verizon and Motorola will claim by rooting it you void the warranty, but even if they are wrong which I am saying they are, what would you do about it? Truth is you would have to take them to court and most people wouldn't bother.
