Default [ROM] ApeX 1.3.1 for Droid X - Running, running, as fast as it can (12/16/10)

ApeX V1.3.1 for Droid X - 2 parts AOSP, 1 part Blur, all ApeX (now with a hint of Gingerbread!)

If at any point in time you get a system not responding message at bootup, do not panic! Just hit wait, hold down power to bring up the menu, and hit reboot.

This ROM is only for Droid X users who have done the .320 leak or have gotten to .340 via OTA update or SBF. This is not compatible with 2.3.15

Many common questions about Apex have answers that can now be found at the official Wiki. Please take a look below, thanks!

Main Page - FabDroid Wiki

Changes in V1.3.1

-Bluetooth voice dialing is now working
-Nexus S Livewallpaper now default (CyanogenMod one available via script)
-Further theming of Gmail, Email, Music notifications icons
-Market and Voice Search updated to latest versions
-Nexus S Wallpapers and Pete’s 2.3 Icons are available on /sdcard/ApeX/
-JRummy Overclocking Script (fixed for new oc module, customized voltage values)
-Startup scripts have been moved so they are no longer overwritten by OC apps (i.e Jrummy)
-Quick Office is fixed
-Nexus S Microbe LWP can be installed via script
-Using Blur text message by default now (fixes a couple quirks)

Credits to P3Droid, TBH, Team DeFuse, JRummy, Xeudoxus, Beesley, Cyanogen, Pete, and many more. Without all the contributions of the devs to the Android community, this would not be possible. Thanks!

Features:

-Optimized & Zipaligned framework and applications
-Combination of AOSP and Blur apps (customize with scripts!)
-Build.prop and sysctl.conf mods (ty Beesley, nenolod, drod!)
-Gingerbread Android 2.3 Theme from SDK image
-Transparent Notification Shade
-ADW.Launcher with up to 7 homescreens (5 by default)
-Neural Network Live Wallpaper from Galaxy S
-Built-in ad blocking (toggle with script)
-MMS app w/ black background (switchable to Blur via script!)
-Yahoo! email and corporate sync working
-Custom window animations and transitions
-Spare Parts, Terminal Emulator, Wireless Tether preinstalled
-Many scripts to customize and make this ROM yours!

(older, will be updated soon)

Users coming from 1.3.0 may be safe to keep data and cache. If there are problems, then factory reset. - Uninstall updates to Market and Google Voice Search if they're there under Settings->Applications->Manage Applications first.

-Place file on your sdcard. Bootstrap recovery and reboot recovery
-Navigate to mounts and storage. FORMAT data, and cache
-Return to previous menu and install .zip from sd card
-Choose ApeX and install!

OR

-Place file on sdcard. Install ROM from sdcard in ROM manager. Wipe data and cache.

QUIRKS

-If you're using another launcher besides ADW, do not use the 'Search' widget. That's for ADW only. It'll get stuck at the top of your screen if you use it on LauncherPro. Use the 'Google Search' widget instead.

Themes:

You can get themes for ApeX 1.3.1 here:

Extras:

Apps removed from 2.3.320

Goodies - Install these the same way you did the ROM, but don't wipe.

Much improved Gingerbread keyboard (with bigger keys) - credit to kejar31:

GoodGB_KB.zip

Goodies pack 1: This includes the battery icons with percentages by tom108 seen here as well as AppWidgetPicker, which groups multiple widgets of the same app together. You can read about it here.

ApeX_V1_3_0_Goodies1.zip

New Scripts in 1.3.1

overclock - launches terminal based overclocking script by JRummy. This has 4 different voltage levels and 11 frequency options per. Also allows setting on boot.

nexus - lets you choose which Neural Network LWP to use, the Nexus S version, or the CyanogenMod version. This will cause your phone to reboot.

microbes - can install or remove the Microbes LWP

New Scripts in 1.3.0

Both of these scripts rely on files I've installed to your sdcards. Please make sure that the sd card is NOT mounted to your computer before running these scripts (i.e. Mass Storage Mode)

fabadw: use this to automatically load up my ADW presets. You can use this as a base to customize ADW further (I find the default configuration a little...lacking).

su
fabadw

Then, go back home, menu, adw preferences, and scroll down to restart ADW.

keyboard: this switches keyboards, with 3 options (gb, wmt, bmt)

gb: gingerbread
wmt: white multitouch
bmt: black (AOSP 2.2) multitouch

Be warned, this does restart your phone after applying this script! Also, upon rebooting, you will need to switch keyboards back to the choice you made, as it will automatically switch to Swype because the script deletes the keyboard first, then restores your choice.

Bravo! Note to newbies and the like: This is my #1 recommended ROM for stability. I use it, solely. Sure, I check out other dev's stuff, but I find myself always coming back to this. It's hassle free and handsome.

You should be able to install right over. Might not even need to wipe data

There's no benefit to going to .340 beforehand.

Ugh! I'm on.... whatever build 1.0.2.2 is, and I want to install this instantly on the latest OTA! Seeing as how we're never going to have an unlocked bootloader, I want this! Haha.

Should I SBF to whatever and then just OTA to .340 and then root and install this?

Get to 2.3.320 or higher via whatever method, and you'll be all set.

Just a data and cache wipe will do. This ROM will overwrite the entire system.

Just to clarify Fab... If I'm already running Apex 1.2.1 with leaked 2.3.320:

  • 1.3 zip on SD card
  • Bootstrap recovery & reboot recovery
  • select zip file & install

(no need to clear/format cache or data - unless I have issues)

It can't be that easy, is it?

You're awesome!

Overwrote 1.2.1. Did NOT clear data and cache. It works fine and kept all my data (LPP, widgets and programs) in place. Honestly, the Rom is so nice that I don't think it NEEDS a theme (black notification bar, etc).

(Excellent work! Very nice!)

However, should I decide to theme this with the 1.2 themes, will I lose anything besides the icons on the top? (bottom lock bar, etc.). REVO will replace the white notifications with circular battery, I assume.

Yes, that's what I did. I flashed over .320 and ended up with .340.

Umm... WOW.

I was a nonbeliever, then I saw the light....

Right over .320.... no clearing cache or data... to .340.... EVERYTHING WORKS!

BTW folks, I was an iPhone user/owner until last Wednesday... since then, I've rooted, ROM'd, SBF'd, nandroid'd, OC'd (Quadrant score of 1675), my phone more times that I can imagine (all the guides on the forums are easy! And I'm no where close to being computer savvy)... Best switch ever.

Plus, I get BETTER service and a LOWER bill. Who would have thought...

Thanks again Fab.

Is anyone having problems with Apex 1.3 causing force closes in the market app?

Coming from 1.2.1 version and installed 1.3.

About every other time I use market, it force closes.

Market is working fine for me. Hey Fab what exactly is done to your "fabadw" been a long time user of LPP and thinking about keeping Home Switcher around to jump between the two.

OMG Fab, I'm not sure how you get these together so quickly but I thank you for it! Downloading tonight and I'll probably get it installed this weekend.

Oh and you have a few bucks heading your way for the beer fund, I really do appreciate the hard work you put into these ROMs. I've been on every Apex and have loved them all.

Great looking rom, quick question. I was allready deodexed on the last ota before I started to flash roms. I am on the .340 ota now. I noticed in the changes that the rom is deodexed, does this mean I DON'T have to be deodexed before hand or do I? Thanks.

ROM replaces all system files... Whether you are currently deodexed or not shouldn't matter.

Damn, very nice. Again.

Donation sent. I use the hell out of the work you do - ApeX is my go-to ROM, the Gingerbread keyboard is by far my favorite keyboard now, and I was using your Gingerbread theme on ApeX 1.2... not necessary now, though!

Appreciate all of your work.

edit: at the cost of Bud Light, I guess donations could go a long way... but treat yourself to something better once in a while

Is it possible to get a Swype keyboard on this ROM? Can I just drop the Swype.apk into system apps?

Just flashed this and it is amazing..... I love the work you do Fab and will never stray after trying others this is what the Droid X should be!!!!

Just a quick question, is there any way to get the percentage on the battery back??? If not no biggie, but was just curious. Thanks for all your hard work again...

One other thing. I tried the clock removal in Rom Manager and it wouldn't work for me. Even tried uninstalling RM and then reinstalling it. It worked with 1.2 but not this one..

fab are you going to make a gingerbread theme? for instance i installed this new rom this morning, put revo on it, didnt like what i saw, just because of the colors that gingerbread offers, i miss my circle battery indicator, and my DroidXNotifications bar lol, is a REVO n NEX theme going to be in the works? mainly for a color overhaul to add the green gingerbread look? Circle battery notifications ftw!

How do you recommend getting to that? I'm on 2.3.15 and I want to go back to stock and then I can OTA to .340 then install this. Right? Or how do I go from 2.3.15 to .320?

You can go back to stock and do the OTA, that will work just fine.

Alternately, you can download the 2.3.320 SBF file and use that.

You know what would be sweet if it was built into the rom? The program from XDA that lets you choose 2 different keyboards to use depending on orientation. The program will still not load on boot and if it was cooked into the rom, that would be awesome.

Flash the .320 SBF from this and once it is done then you can flash this rom and it will take your breath away....

Coming Soon: Full 2.3.320 SBF file!!

Nevermind, I am an idiot. I was holding down the wrong button on the keyboard to switch inputs. I am not used to the gingerbread keyboard.

Anyone get the Droid X Overclock app to work on this? It says my phone is not compatible.

...and I just wanted to say thanks to Fab. This ROM is awesome. Fastest I have seen so far.

so you're saying it works with apex 1.3.0 but it just has to be launched each time after boot?

Fab - I was having multiple random reboots a day with your old version of apex. Was that because the overclock didn't take well? Will I experience the same issue with 1.3? I sbf'd and installed .340 OTA prior to flashing apex 1.3.0.

Might want to try to lower the voltage... I had reboots too and after lowering the voltage they went away.....
