Default Locked Bootloader??

Since the Droid X is my first Android Smartphone I don't know the difference in a locked and unlocked bootloader . What is the difference and what are the advantages? Is Motorola the only maker locking the bootloader?

I don't believe Motorola is the only company locking its boot loader. Whereas you can put a rom and themes and do root stuff with a locked boot loader, you can't put a custom kernel in without bricking your device. The difference is that we are limited as to how far we can change our rom.
