Default Gingerbread Tethering Thread (NOT a debate about legality)

This thread is not a debate about the legality of tethering. I include a short summary of the relevant details in this post so anyone thinking of tethering can be aware of them. If you want to debate whether people should tether, do so in the thread allocated for it. *Please* do not derail this thread and cause it to be moved/locked.

With Gingerbread .596 being officially out, Verizon has started making it more difficult for people to tether, including having Google take the "Wireless Tether" application down from the android market. It is still possible to tether, though it is currently more difficult than it was before. There are also rumors that VZW is tracking individuals who tether and there is one solitary report of someone who tethered 20+gb in a month getting their contract voided (complete with ETF) for doing so.

Tethering without a separate tethering plan is for sure, 100%, against your terms of service with Verizon, no matter if you have unlimited data or not, no matter how much or how often you use it. That said, it is still possible to get free tethering on gingerbread, and to stem the flow of questions, I have started this thread with basic instructions and links to the necessary files.

If you follow these instructions and tether, you are doing so at your own risk. You have been warned.

Steps to tether on Droid X Gingerbread (.596). You must be running a rooted gingerbread for these to work, NOT the OTA. See the relevant thread here for instructions on how to get to gingerbread rooted.

Step 1: Download the "TBH" patch (here) and the "experimental" wireless tether 3.0 apk (here) and put them on your SD card.
Step 2: Boot into clockwork mod recovery (if you do not have it, Droid 2 Bootstrap can be found here) and install the TBH patch.
Step 3: Boot your phone up and install the wireless tether apk.
Step 4 (this may not be necessary but I had to do it): Turn on the 3G mobile hotspot app that came from gingerbread, and hit "configure", then set your SSID and security code to whatever you want. Then turn that off, we will be using the wireless tether apk.
Step 5: Open your "wifi tether" app that you installed in step 3, hit menu, then settings. The settings that work for me: Auto for the first two dropdown boxes, only the second "enable wifi-encryption" checkbox checked, the same passphrase and SSID that I set in step 4. Access control unchecked (muy importante) and everything else in the default.
Step 6: turn off your wifi try tethering. If that does not work, restart your phone and try again. It works the majority of the time, but occasionally I do have to reboot my phone.

Once again, please do not use this thread to discuss the legality (or lackthereof) of tethering. That discussion has been had a million times, and if you really want to continue it, go to the thread I linked above. This thread is only for technical discussion/support of those who do feel comfortable regarding the risk.

I appreciate your thought and help to this community, but you are on a slippery slope here. This is a subject that we ( I state "we" as the majority of the staff at AF) have tried to keep a nice distance from. I'm not going to lock/delete this thread, but I am going to pass it on further to a mod to see if they want it to be posted on AF or not.

Again, I appreciate that you have figured this all out and I personally know exactly how to do it, but I do frown upon people breaking their TOS, unless totally necessary (i.e. natural disaster and have no internet, etc)

Thanks.

One does have to consider though, rooting and installing a theme/ROM is also technically against the TOS and we have a whole forum devoted to that. But I don't want this thread to get into that debate for the umpteenth time, so I'm not going to argue.

I appreciate your ability to let my comments blow over you. I also appreciate that you didn't get mad that I reported the thread (not to get someone in trouble, but to make sure we are all staying in line with AF's vision).

Thank you for this thread. Not because of whether or not I will choose to tether, but because without some hacking/cracking/development and workarounds, we wouldn't have things like ROOT.

As long as we have a section dedicated to root, we should also be able to have technical discussion on things like this.

Show me where in the TOS it says i can't root....

rooting is protected under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act it is 110% legal and Verizon/Moto/AT&T/HTC/Sprint/whoever else...can do nothing about it...

the justification of tethering by comparing it to rooting is baseless and holds no water...

that is all i will say on the matter...

Op got drawn into the tethering legitimacy debate and participated in the very thing he set out not to do. Unfortunate, and it demonstrates why this topic will not fly here.

/thread.

Peace.
