Default [ROM][DROIDX] ApeX 2.0.0 Release Candidate (RC4) (10/9/2011)

ApeX 2.0 for Droid X Gingerbread (.605 OTA) has finally reached the Release Candidate landmark! As always, the goals of the ROM are speed, stability, reliability, and simplicity of use. I feel that this version lives up to those goals admirably! Take it for a test yourself and see if you agree!

[HR][/HR]
Requirements
  • You must be on .602/.605 rooted or a .602/.605 based ROM
  • Kernel must be 2.6.32.9-g34b306d
    tkwp86@ca25rhe81 #2
  • Baseband must be BP_C_01.09.13P
If you're on a .340 based ROM, read instructions below on how to use AIO to jump straight to ApeX

[HR][/HR]
Disclaimer
Code:
As always, you must take responsibility for what you do to your own phone.
I have created this ROM and tested it to the best of my ability.
The instructions are written to make sure that users have success installing and using the ROM.
However, if anything goes wrong and your phone is damaged or rendered useless, I do not take any responsibility.

Credits
  • Motorola - for building this great device and providing a decent Gingerbread base (.605)
  • Google - for Android, AOSP source code used to compile many apps in this ROM
  • CyanogenMod Team - for GB source code used to compile many apps in this ROM
  • SuperTeam - for Launcher2 source code
  • @team_black_hat and @p3droid - for all the work they do to acquire leaks and rooted GB builds
  • @kejar31 - for teaching me his secret sauce technique for compiling AOSP apps for the Blur Framework
  • @jrummy16 and @drod2169 - for providing answers to my many questions via Gtalk
  • @_Mycahya_ and @Mobile_Sensei - for helping me with some of the harder themeing in the ROM
  • Dr. Carpenter - for creating the Google boot logo
  • All my testers - for helping me make Apex great!

[HR][/HR]
Changelog in RC4
  • Updated system base to .605
  • Fixed Market purchasing bug
  • Fixed bluetooth phone call volume bug and custom ringtones!
  • This required the return of Blur dialer and contacts. Fortunately, these apps bring good features as well.
  • Super Launcher2 brings amazing speed, customization, while retaining AOSP styling
  • True AOSP lockscreen sliders (less laggy than Blur sliders)
  • Updated Superuser 3.0 beta 3 app and binary (thanks @ChainsDD!)
  • Updated latest Market 3.1.3
  • Updated Terminal Emulator and OI File Manager
  • Fixed some signature errors -- Superuser, Market, Terminal Emulator, and File Manager can now be updated through Market
  • Other cool stuff
[HR][/HR]
Features
  • Android 2.3.3 based on the Gingerbread OTA (4.5.605)
  • All apps replaced with AOSP/CM7 counterparts except dialer/contacts (compiled from source for DX, by me)
  • Stock Gingerbread Theme
  • Bloat and Market apps removed
  • Facebook for Android App syncs w/ Contacts!
  • DSP Manager (visual equalizer) for headphones, phone speaker, and BT
  • MusicMod with gesture controls
  • Dev Tools, Spare Parts, Terminal Emulator for fun tweakin'
  • ApeX wallpaper gallery with user submitted wallpapers!
  • Quadrant "Turbo" Mode for mad scores
  • Witty Protips (ApeX Blurbs)
[HR][/HR]
Screenshots

[HR][/HR]
Scripts
  1. poweroverwhelming : activate Quadrant "turbo" mode
  2. sys : mount system r/w and r/o
[HR][/HR]
Things to know
  • Market apps are removed (Gmail, Maps, Voice Search, etc). Remember to re-enable Gmail sync in your account settings after downloading it.
  • Preset, Yahoo, Email, Motorola, and Corporate Sync in add accounts don't do anything.
  • Sync Facebook contacts using the official app
  • If you need to activate your phone, hold down the menu button at the activation screen to bring up the keyboard.
[HR][/HR]
BUGS
  • Cannot add dialer or contacts to hotseat in new Launcher 2. Keep dialer in the default position for now, sorry!
[HR][/HR]
Installation Instructions
  1. Meet all the requirements listed at the top of the post
  2. Wipe data/cache, dalvik cache (only wipe cache and dalvik if coming from RC3)
  3. Flash Apex

For .340 (Froyo) users, download the Apex AIO file below. In recovery, format system, data, and cache. Then MOUNT SYSTEM, and install Apex AIO. You will be on .602 with new kernel, baseband, and of course, Apex. FAILURE TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS WILL RESULT IN BRICK REQUIRING SBF.

Market Fix (no longer necessary after RC4) - For 'an error has occured' when purchasing apps

Dark Market 3.1.3 -- by B-boy

Flash this in recovery.

Standalone Super Launcher 2 from Apex 2.0 RC3

http://bit.ly/rcaqxv -- install as you would any apk

Installable Blur Applications

Instructions - These apps are installable like any non-market application. This means you need to go into Settings, Applications, and make sure 'Unknown sources' is checked.

Download the desired file(s) to your sdcard, then use the file manager to click and install it. Some apps require additional steps, which will be detailed below.

Installable Blur Applications for Apex 2.0

Additional Steps for Keyboards (Multitouch, Swype)

-After installing either/both of these keyboards, go into Settings, Language & keyboard, and enable the downloaded keyboard(s). Then, tap and hold a text entry field, and select 'Input method' and select desired keyboard.

Additional Steps for Blur Home

-Blur Home will not work without removing Launcher2. Pay attention to these steps as failure to follow them can result in a missing launcher. After installing the Blur Home apk, fire up the Terminal Emulator and type the following:

Code:
su
sys -rw
mv /system/app/Launcher2.apk /system/app/Launcher2.bak
Hit home, wait a few seconds, and the Blur launcher will come up.

I'll have installable Blur apk files (including Camera, Gallery, FM Radio, etc.) later this afternoon, but first I'm working on...

an all in one .zip file that should take you to Gingerbread and Apex 2.0 RC3 from any .340 based ROM (meaning Apex 1.4.1 and below). Fun stuff!

Hells yeah, Fab. I've been on the CM7 train for a while now, but just went to .602 when I saw that you were updating apex. The dialer and camera are the only blur elements I really like over AOSP. Thanks!

The AIO file is up in the OP. Please read the directions carefully or you will have to SBF.

The AIO only works if you're on a .340 based ROM (i.e. Apex 1.4.1 and older, or some 2nd init ROMS that have not moved to the GB kernel yet, MIUI for example I think).

Just finished the flash. I wiped data-cache-dalvik and then flashed. When I rebooted the system all my apps and data were there, waiting for me, and running. That's not supposed to happen is it?

I know that there is the usual warning that someone is not responsible for what happens to your phone if you use their stuff. I think there needs to be a cut and paste apology for being a noob. That would save me tons of typing.

If I have the pattern lockscreen set up, will this ROM bypass the slide to unlock so we don't have to go through two unlock screens?

How did you get the keyboard figured out? I flashed back to rooted. 602 because I didn't care for the keyboard and my google calender wont sync...can't deal with that!

Nevermind, went back to OP :-)

2) I cant connect to wi-fi
3) none of my apps will download

EDIT- A reboot solved the above issues

I just upgraded from RC2 and so far it works great. One issue I am having is with swype. The advanced settings work fine for email, but not for text msg. I did not have this issue before the upgrade. Any ideas?

Texting with swype mysteriously started working fine this morning, no changes on my part.

REVOlution now available in 3rd post.

Blur replacements for Email, Calendar, not as easily done as the other installable apps. It will require deletion of AOSP app, and perhaps of some app data too. Need to look into it more.

Just installed this today and for some reason when the phone is just sitting idle on my desk it boots into the clockworkmod recovery... I've been trying to find a trigger but to no avail. If anyone can help with this it would be greatly appreciated!

I SBF'd to .340, rooted, updated to .602 via the 2-part zip, wiped data/cache, installed the ApeX RC3 and restored user apps + data using TiBu.

How can I get the older Market back? I've tried installing the vending.apk file that I've used previously and it just causes the Market to FC afterward. I've also moved the file into system/app and changed permissions but that doesn't work either.

Edit: I pulled the vending.apk file from Gapps and moved it into system/app, changed permissions and it works fine.

When you say it is not working do you mean that the wifi does not start up when it is turned on in settings, or that the wifi is checked and icon is present and you have no reception?

For the noobs like myself.

You need to format "system, data, and cache" under the mount/unmount option in recovery.

It only took 3 SBF's to figure that out

It only took 3 SBF's to figure that out
Ya have to have a sense of humor or ability to endure lots of stress and frustration. Just my opinion, but I vote for the humor.

I'm on RevNumber's unofficial CM4DX on the GB kernel ( yes the GB kernel has a working 2nd init due to the great work of CVPCS)(596 or 602) and I need to know if I need to flashback to my stock. 602 nandroid first and then install this or if I can go right over the top of the CM ROM.

Just wipe data and cache. The script in ApeX will format system. Just make sure you are on the .13p radio.

I completely lost my 3G connection once yesterday evening, the only way to get it back was to reboot my phone.

When I was running RC2 of this ROM there were data and airplane mode issues. I guess Fab did not fix this for RC3?

Found a work around, using the widget to toggle 3g on and off. Is there a way to flash a file to get the normal battery icon back instead of that nasty ring?

Default Disable slide to unlock?

This question was asked above but I didn't see an answer...

Is there a way to disable the slide to unlock and keep a pattern unlock?

How does this compare to Shuji 2.0? Any big differences?

Can anyone get the AIO to install?

Mine never seem to work:

I sbf to 340.
Wipe everything.
Mount the System
Install

I just keep getting stuck on the Google logo.

Thanks.

Hey Fab, awesome work on the new ROM and the updater. Thank you very much. I only have a couple questions for now.
-Are contacts supposed to sync with facebook pictures, and if so how do I make that happen? I've looked all through my phone (i've synced contacts with facebook through the app, so now i have all fb info and phone numbers) but I can't get the pics to sync. No real biggie, i just know that it used to work a long time ago.
-also, when I try to change the static wallpaper to one of your other static wallpapers, nothing happens. If I change it to a live wallpaper and then try to change to a different static wallpaper, it changes it to the one of the matterhorn.

***update for point #1,
I started looking more into contacts settings and this is what I'm seeing, although I don't have an easy way to fix it.
--most contacts now sync with facebook pictures, however, the ones that were making me think that pics weren't syncing have somehow stored a different picture(usually an old fb pic) as the contacts pic. if you scroll to facebook info in the edit contacts of each person, you can then touch the fb pic and it will allow you to "use this picture". but you have to do it individually for all that this seems to effect. Is there any faster way of doing this?

donation coming tomorrow after I get paid

Have you used syncmypix in the past? I think the Google picture always takes priority (that's what syncmypix does, sets Facebook pics as Google pic), so if you did that earlier, it will still use the old FB pic synced previously, even if they have a newer pic.

Or you could just run syncmypix every now and then

yeah, i used sync my pics like twice a long time ago. that app didn't seem to work for me. It would only sync like 20 pics at a time. is there a way for me to clear that so that I can reset it as fb default pic?

Mine was a little different. I lost it every time my screen timed out.
