firstEncounter is doing some amazing work, with the help of other teams of course, on this Rom and it would be worth your while to keep track of his progress. Keep in mind this is beta so flasher beware!

I actually installed it yesterday and was very impressed. Ran super smooth, although some things like Google talk and the camera don't work. Switching from 3g to wifi is sketchy at times. Not too sure about the launcher though would need to get used to it I guess. Over all though its amazing that ics is even on the dx. Once some more bugs get worked put I will definitely use as me daily driver. (I switched back to cm7gb this morning.)

I tried it this afternoon and for a beta it's some very impressive work! Has bugs, which the developer notes in his initial post. He's also VERY helpful on posts and bug notices in the Rootzwiki thread. I had to uninstall cause I lost WiFi and 3G and couldn't get them back. But I will continue to watch this build closely. It looks like one of our best chances at ICS on the DX.
I've been testing this Rom for 2 days now and the battery life so far is fantastic. Unlike other 2nd init Roms this one doesn't drain your battery just sitting there doing nothing.

Really,I am on defx pt 2 and it's not killing my battery at a fast pace. Have you compared the two?
So, I wanna install this. I have CM7GB, can I just install this right over? I'm on 2.3.4. I didnt notice any directions (I also didnt look too hard either :P), so is that it? If so, I'm doing it tonight.

You should be able flash right over. That's what I did. I wiped Cache, Dalvik Cache, and did a full system wipe just to be safe. Loaded up just fine, first boot took a few minutes. The ROM is fast and very stable I like it a whole lot. It would be tough to go back to a GB ROM at this point.

Cool, thanks. I just installed it. Honestly, I'm loving it. Didn't even bother wiping anything, just installed it right over. One thing though, i can't get into the market. The app just crashes after launching it. I assume i need to instal the gapps from the thread but i can't figure it how to get into recovery. Other than that, it's pretty sweet if you can stand all the blue.

Yeah, you have to install the Gapps from the thread, it's made specifically for ICS. During initial boot when the LED on the phone turns blue hit volume down, it will take you to a boot menu. Use the volume keys to manuver and power to select. The menu should give you the option to go to CWR or stock recovery.

Yes camera, MMS, I think GPS for many, GTalk, as well as some other things are currently not working. But for it to come this far this quickly is quite impressive, not to mention the dev is only 16.

You need to flash the gapps to fix that problem. You may still experiance problems though because you were supposed to flash the Rom and gapps in the same cwr session.
If you continue to have allot of problems you may have to sbf back to 602 and start fresh. But you can try my method first which is to wipe data, format system, data, dalvic, cache, flash gapps again, and wipe data one more time.
Coolguy I wasn't on that build very long and to be honest i didn't pay attention to the battery drain. I got focused on this sweet thing that is ICS....lol

I'm kind of hoping this is like all the other ROMs where like the first day it drains battery like hell and then smoothens out after that. Because my battery only lasted like 8 hours yesterday, compared to the 30ish I could get from CM7GB. But this ROM is very nice, and I especially love the easy access to the settings from the pulldown bar. And yeah that was stupid of me to think the old GApps would work haha.
Do third party camera apps and MMS, such as Handcent work on this, or is the camera completely fubar still?

The camera driver haas to be rewritin for ics so no cam app will work. The only text app i havebtested is go sms and it does work. Mms is still fubared.
Been running the beta 3 for a full day now, and it is incredible. I am running Nova Launcher (It seems that it is much smoother). The only things left to fix, as far as I can see is the camera, and voice input. This rom ROCKS!!!!
After running this for about a week in beta two, and a day in beta three, I think it's time for a basic review. At first glance this Rom is very nice. It's very fluid and the new features, such as the new browser, are cool.
You have an added widgets tab in the app drawer to add widgets to your desktop. So no more holding the homescreen to add widgets. This of course could be a drawback for those that are so used to holding the homescreen to add a widget.
I guess it would all come down to who is willing to get used to the new layout and who refuses to. You do have the option of using what's called "Nova Launcher" that will add the holding home for widgets feature back. System menus are also totaly revamped for ease of access.
From Running this Rom I can tell you it is a 2nd init Rom but also runs as though it was a stock 1st init Rom. It has the fluidity of a 2nd init but benchmarks as a 1st init. I'm assuming this is because the port isn't stable yet. It very well might outbenchmark other 2nd init Roms when it's complete.
Now on to the downsides to this Rom. One major drawback to this Rom, and other versions of it, is the camera. There is no source file to take the camera driver from so it has to be writen from the bottom up which is not an easy task. So for the time being the camera is non excistant.
ICS, or Android 4.0, was designed to work on the latest hardware and is not meant to run on the Droid X. I, among many others, am very excited to see this ported over to our DX's but our hardware leaves us with on fundimental flaw, power.
ICS being designed to run on a duel core processor with the latest GPU leaves us DX users at a disadvantage. So while ICS may, in time, be 100% successfully ported over to the DX it will never live up to it's full potential.
In my honest opinion, ICS would be better suited to be ported over to at least the Droid X2 as it has the better hardware and potential to run it. This of course is assuming the X2 won't get ICS in the near future.
So there you have it. A very basic review of this Rom. This isn't meant to scare anyone away from at least trying it out. That option is soley up to you. Just keep in mind that it is STILL beta. So there are many glitches still to be attended to.
Feel free to check out the link for beta 3 to see what these glitches are as SOME of them have workarounds. I actualy love this Rom and can't wait for it to be complete. Even with the hardware drawbacks this Rom runs faster than any 2nd init Rom I have ever used.
The only lingering issue I can see with this ROM is the camera. I feel the DX is more than powerful enough to run ICS, my phone has no or very little lag issues at all. It runs far smoother than Gingerbread did on my phone, and that's saying quite a bit. Now while I haven't used ICS on something like the Nexus, I don't feel like our phones are limiting it at all, so the user experience is still intact at least.
I didn't like the Trebuchet or Nova though, so I'm sticking with Go Launcher on this one. Good news for those who prefer it, because it works just fine.
I agree with the rest of it though. This definitely feels better than CM7/CM7GB for sure.
I ve been using this rom for 2 days now its nice smooth and pretty fast. Biggest problems im seeing beside the camera is lack of flash and sometimes scrolling can be a little laggy. The battety life has been ok with heavy use not the greatest but ok. Ive always noticed that the multi tasking takes a good couple of seconds to react which gets annoying. But with all that being said this rom is only a couple weeks old so give it time. Cant wait for firstEncounter final build its gonna be beastly.
It can be tricky to get it working but it does work with this. Check out the disscusion board. there are many posts about Swype and getting it working proper.
Been running beta3 for two days. It's pretty smooth though I feel it's not as fluid as Miui 1.12.9. The ICS UI is not as polished as I expected but it's very refreshing and somehow deeply satisfying. The ROM itself is quite stable for a beta. I haven't run into any major problem other than the known ones (camera and voice input). The camera is a deal breaker for this to be a long term daily driver but for the time being I'm loving it.
Oh, battery life for me is about the same as other 2-init ROM I tried. It barely gets through a day of heavy use, which is not great but good enough.
If you run it on Beta 3 then you shouldn't have any issues. I didn't have a problem at all getting it working. Beta 2 might have issues as cougar pointed out, because a lot of people had trouble switching keyboards.
