Notsure Recovered photos aren't the same image in gallery vs. opened through file viewer

My Gallery was recently displaying duplicate photos. Thinking that I had taken two of a particular shot, I deleted one, but when I tried to view the other one, the original photo would flash and then turn to a gray icon.

I then rooted my phone and used Recuva to recover the image file that I'm *sure* was the file name of the image that I deleted (since the camera names them based upon the timestamp). I also used Recuva to recover one image file (taken at the same time, but never exhibited that duplicate behavior in Gallery) for comparison. I can see these files in the "recovered" directory, and they are appearing in the scroll of "All Photos". They do not, however, appear in the "Camera" scroll.

Here's the interesting part. The thumbnail in the "All Photos" scroll for that "duplicate" image I had deleted still shows the gray image icon. When I open it up, I just see the gray icon. The original photo doesn't first flash at me anymore. The phone won't let me text the file. When I email the file to myself, none of the graphics programs on my PC can open it, including PaintShop Pro. I used the online PixRecovery JPG repair program at OfficeRecovery.com to try to view it with my PC, and the image is NOT the one that I had thought I'd recover. Maybe now you're thinking, "Well, mmellon was just wrong about the file name." Not so. The file name was definitely the format of something named by the Camera, and it definitely reflected an accurate timestamp in the filename. Also, the photo that appeared after "repairing" the file was something downloaded from Facebook that I deleted the same evening after I deleted the photo that is the topic of this whole post. It was not a Camera file, despite having a Camera-type filename. And...

I repeated the above process for the other photo that I recovered using Recuva. It is also still named in a way that I would have expected the camera to name it. The thumbnail shows up in the "All Photos" scroll within the Gallery. It's the thumbnail of the photo that I had expected to recover. When I open the photo for a full-screen view, it is also the photo that I expect. However, when I view the photo through my PC, email it to myself, or text it to myself, or view it in through Root Explorer, it's a different photo than what I see in the Gallery! It's actually the same as another photo that I took that day but didn't delete, and that I can also still see in the actual "Camera" scroll of the gallery.

I'm convinced that because I can still see the right photo for the recovered file through Gallery, it's got to be in there somewhere, also with the other one that I'm only seeing the gray icon for (which may be a corrupt JPG or something, though).

So, any ideas?

Thanks!
mmellon
