Default Droid X overheat/freeze issues when playing music. Getting tired of this.

So, I've been having issues with my Droid X (this is my second, my first bricked during the 2.2 upgrade.) It's fairly reproducible, and I want to know if it's just me or if everyone's experiencing this.

It generally happens when I have the phone in the car dock, It's connected to my stereo for phone and A2DP via bluetooth and music is playing, though my mom (who just got a droid X) called me yesterday to say it was happening when she was listening to music on her way to New York and she was pretty frustrated. Basically, what it boils down to is music playback starts getting choppy, the phone gets warmer than average running temperature (though not horribly hot) and eventually music playback stops. While double-tapping the home button still opens that 'say a command' voice prompt, the screen takes forever to draw and the phone runs sluggish as hell. Other than that, the screen is unresponsive, the home button doesn't actually do anything, and the only way to get the phone out of this state is a battery pull. This particularly sucks because I've gotten used to using my phone as my in-car music player AND for navigation so since it is so frequently going down in the middle of driving places I can't really rely on it anymore.

It may just be my device, too. When it's plugged into some computers in my house, the bottom half of the touch screen becomes unresponsive. When I brought it to the Verizon store to get it replaced, the incompetent rep basically determined that since I'm running LauncherPro, my device must be rooted and refused to honor my warranty.

I'm getting pretty fed up with Verizon. I'm on my 8th replacement phone from the first droid I got (3 droid erises, 3 motorola droids, 2 droid X's) and not a single one has worked as advertised.

OK - don't blame VZW, they didn't make the phone.

Regardless - I find that the phone gets 'warm' when I am using Bluetooth in the car, as well as when I use things like Sirius XM or Pandora. It never overheats, but I am not using BT AND a streaming service. You have to realize that you are using 2 or 3 antennas at once in a very small package. Anyway, if its freezing, you should call for a replacement device - always avoid the store. Customer service has no clue and if you threaten to cancel they will send you a new one. Sounds like you have a motherboard/processor issue going on

I am going to blame VZW because they seem incapable of sending me a device, reconditioned or otherwise, that actually functions. I got reconditioned Moto Droids with huge gouges in the chassis that showed exposed silver underneath the black that were certified as OK by them, and one where the hinge was broken on the screen from the moment it arrived.

I'll also blame them for not properly training their corporate reps on the devices and putting ideas like 'rooting' and 'deodexed' in their head while giving them absolutely no indication of what those things mean. The Drew Carey look-alike I had to deal with was taking great joy in talking me in circles and trying to corner me into admitting that I'd rooted the phone I'd received four hours ago and refused to acknowledge that it could possibly be a problem caused by the manufacturer.

Second, I'm referring to warm above the baseline operating temperature performing similar tasks. The issue ONLY occurs in the stock Music app, I haven't seen it yet on streaming services, and both 611 and the store refuse to send me new-in-box replacement device, which is a load of crap since their refurbs arrive in such awful shape and the new droid x is only a week old. All this aside, a device with a 1ghz processor and 3g data connection and bluetooth should either be capable of using all both at once or otherwise prevent you from doing so. Antennae are not the source of the overheating.

There is a thread over at Motorola's forum that may be of interest:

https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/38876

Also look for other threads from Matt. he seems to be the only source of info I have found from Motorola.

Hope this helps.

Try another music app. The stock player is lacking anyways.

Protocollie,

I have the EXACT same issue with my droid x and the music app, and I too have had my droid for no more than one week. Do you really think that replacing the phone with a new one is the way to go? Or should I get a different phone that can play music and preform simultaneous tasks without freezing up? I really love everything else about the droid x, but having a simple, working music player is essential.

Yes, same choppy or frozen player, hot during Bluetooth. See trackback to other post.
