My Droid X is a Great PDA - Not a Great Cell Phone!
I bought my Droid X on 15 July through Best Buy. Charged it up and been using it every since. Did some software updates and everything seems to be working just great, except, the thing won't make a phone call when I need it! (I only make maybe one or two cell phone calls a week--it can't even keep up with that requirement!)
My wife and I were at Wal-Mart about two weeks ago. She was shopping as usual and I was wandering around in the electronic department. She calls me and I grab my Droid X which is about 60% charged and attempt to answer her! Nothing! I see her picture and I punch on "Answer" and nothing. I say, "Hello, hello", and I get silence. So, I try to dial her. The phone dialer shows up, I punch her number and it seems to going through but I get nothing. I try this three times not knowing that my wife is getting my call every time but she can't hear me! So, now I'm tearing my case off and trying to pull the battery out and by this time my wife has tracked me down and asks what's wrong with my phone!
I know I have/had a solid 3G signal in the Wal-Mart store. Everything else seemed to be working fine. I do a lot of sports score tracking on my phone along with the news and keeping some passwords handy. Those apps seem to work just great.
Another time, I just got back from getting the truck washed and in the Wal-Mart parking lot (yeah, we go there a lot!). I'm trying to call my wife. My Dorid X looks like it's working fine, I punch up her number and it seems to be ringing through but I can't hear nothing. I call her three times and still get nothing. By this time I'm out of my truck and in the store and she's standing right in the doorway so I know her signal was just as good as mine and she says, "I answered you all three times you called!"
And now, just tonight, we're at a local shopping center in front of a Hall Mark card store and my truck won't start! Dang! When we left the house I thought it had a little trouble starting so by the time we sat at the store the truck battery completely died. I was sitting in the truck looking at some basketball scores and had just put my Droid X away when my wife got in and said she was ready to leave. Then the truck wouldn't start. I said I'll call for a jump via Roadside Assistance and whipped out my Droid X. It's locked up solid. It's on my home screen and nothing is moving and nothing is working. I can't make a call or anything. So, here I go doing another battery pull to get it working again so I can make a dang phone call (reminds me of my Blackberry Curve days)!
My Droid X takes forever to come back up. I'm sitting there trying to explain to my wife why my fancy phone is taking almost three minutes or longer for me to get to a point where I can make a simple phone call! I don't have anything to say! I finally get a call made and then my screen and dialer start going wonky! I'm supposed to put in my member number but by the time my keyboard comes back on screen, the operator is already asking me to do it again or pick something else! I'm really getting disgusted with this thing now.
I finally get my call made, we get the truck jumped and eventually a new battery, but I still got my Droid X which is getting to be pretty sucky as a cell phone.
Anyone having these kind of problems? How long does it take for your Droid X to become usable after a battery pull? Why can't this think make a cell phone call?
Yea... might be time to give Tech Support a call. I've almost never had a problem calling while at Wallyworld.

Hey Guardsix, have you looked into a replacement? Some of the early phones had some issues and you are well within the warranty to get this fixed - you shouldn't be having the call issues you've described.
Verizon has always treated me well when I've had phone problems in the past. After several issues with Palm smartphones (which Verizon did their best to solve, including exchanging my previous 700 and 755p numerous times), I finally made the switch to Android and this has been the best phone I've ever owned hands down. I've never had any phone issues with my DX, and only a few issues on the PDA side (although this latest OTA seems to have addressed these).
Judging from the amount of people on this forum who are very satisfied with the Droid X I think that you might just have a malfunctioning handset. I know its a hassle but calling VZW might be the fix.

Ditto here recommending you get a replacement DX. Having 3 microphones and the best reception of any cellular device I've ever used, it is far and away the best CELL PHONE I've ever owned.

this forum is great. but, there is far too much "go get a replacement" advice goin on around here.
less than 10% of phones swapped out for warranty issues actually have a warranty issue.
that said, like was suggested before, try *228, option 2.
if that doesnt help, do a factory data restore (settings > privacy> Factory Data Reset.
this is not common. there is a glitch somewhere. it could be hardware, or it could be software. it makes sense to try to fix the software issues first. if that doesnt work, THEN get the phone replaced.
Guardsix > I had the exact same problem. It started doing it only after the froyo update in october. Too many times to be anything acceptable. I tried to do my own factory reset and it did not fix anything. I called verizon, they told me to do another reset and to call the *228 option 2. After that, I hadn't ever noticed it happening again. However, my phone started having all these other problems, some that came up again after the froyo update. They were hindering my phone's features. I mean I couldn't even play music, or plug in my phone jack without it auto calling my recent contacts or popping up the voice command menu.
That's a bit off topic, but I ended up calling them again and they sent me a replacement phone overnight. My new phone has been working perfect and now I am in love with the droid x all over again.
But if *228 does not fix the problem, I'm sure they will send you a replacement if you call them.
Really, this is not typical behavior for the X. I have found that with all the MOTO UI overlay sluggishness gripes that I have, they are all overshadowed by the fact that the Droid X is a great cell phone.
This phone since July (I am on my 2nd droid x phone)has not had a hiccup in the calling department. All voice is clear, and calls come in and go out without a hitch.
Don't hesitate to get this fixed, as there are much more important things you can be dealing with this holiday.
