Question Gingerbread update issues (yes, multiple)

I very recently updated my droid x to the gingerbread platform, and of course, that updated the market as well. Now, when I try to download or upgrade an app, it appears that the download starts, but it just keeps going and going without any (visible) progress, sometimes for hours, and then sometimes I get an error message. I miss how the old version used to show the percentage of the app (or whatever) had been downloaded. Also since I updated my software, I'm not getting email notifications, and as a matter of fact, I have to open my email for it to "download" the new messages. What can I do?

Have you performed a factory reset on your phone? That solves a multitude of upgrade problems.

If you are not rooted you can't.

I would suggest you do what RichSz mentioned earlier too; it should help clear up a lot of the issues you are experiencing and may experience later on.

Yeah no doubt, Froyo is good, but GB has been better to me than Froyo (except for the UI changes, I really don't like that) was

Everyone has a different experience, just try it. If you don't like it go back to Froyo.

Ok, so I'm a noob, and don't understand the lingo. What is rooting, and how do I do it? Will it do anything to my phone that I can't reverse if I don't like it? Should I do a factory reset? And if so, how? And what will that do? As for the email issue, its set to a data push, so I don't know why it isn't working properly.

You should go to the all root section and check out the stickies for all the info you need.

Hi Kra_z_nic,

Please go to your Gmail account on the web, and check Contacts - it's on the left side of the page.

If your contacts are on Google web, you're all set for those - but if they are on your phone only, you will need to use your contacts/people app on your phone to first export them to your sd card, and then import them back after the reset. Your DX pals here will have to give you the play-by-play on how to do that, I don't have your phone in particular.

You can backup your apps and SMS for free, look for these in the Market - Astro File Manager and SMS Backup.

You can also consider a really nice comprehensive backup tool for a few bucks, many people prefer MyBackup Pro.

~~~~~
And - there's yet another solution that may be open to you.
Go into your settings, Applications (or Application Management, it varies by name per phone model but it's the same tool) - and find the Market listed under All Apps. Click on that.
You may find that you can uninstall the update and go back to the way things were before. It won't remove your Market - just the update.
So, I think you have a lot of options that will help to your specific question.
I also think things are little confusing in the discussion here, because I thought the discussion was supposed to be about how to get this Market happening and how to restore some basic functions here.
Rooting is great, it's cool, it's wonderful - but it's something you do when you want to - if you have to root to make something basic in Android work, there's a big problem elsewhere.
And I don't think the Market has big problems only solvable by root.
Root just gives you access to more backup techniques where this particular problem is concerned - so, please decide on the path that you feel is best for you.
~~~~~~~

PS - My personal opinion - and I could be wrong, it's just my opinion - is that RichSz probably nailed the solution to problem right off. In my personal experience, factory/data reset is something I've just learned to do after any big update - I always have update troubles, that always fixes it for me.

Hope this helps, please let me know!
