Default can't place outgoing call with bluetooth

My Range Rover is equipped with bluetooth. It worked flawlessly until Droid made a significant software update around six weeks ago. Since the update, I have to activate my phone manually before I can use my car dial pad to place an outgoing call. In other words; if the Droid screen is blank (off), my car bluetooth cannot activate the phone to make a call. I visited the Verizon store and the person who helped me said it must be something specific to the Range Rover. I believed that until yesterday. I bought new a BMW yesterday. And, just as with the Range Rover, the Droid screen has to be on for the car bluetooth to complete an outgoing call. Note: Under settings I have selected “Allow Bluetooth bypass”.
